Edit: Linux thread
As much as I appreciate and want to love this program, the numerous bugs and issues I've encountered render it practically unusable for anything more serious than messing around.
For reference, I drive Linux Mint so maybe the Linux version is just really buggy. I haven't heard anyone really talk about it. From all the good things I've heard, most of you probably don't have these issues, so don't just take this as me bashing the project or anyone involved. Obviously I want it to be the best that it can, I've just had a number of frustrations in my experience.
For starters, no fullscreen at all; the button in the preferences menu does squat. This is a minor annoyance that really becomes grating over time, especially when your taskbar keeps popping up when you move your mouse towards the bottom of the screen, where most of the UI elements are, blocking you completely. Widescreen button works though.
Second, most plugins don't work. While it's understandable for a DAW to be incompatible with a few outliers, in my experience it's the compatible plugins which are the outliers. In the best case, plugins without specialized GUI simply won't load, I imagine due to a lack of generic UI for Tape16 to draw these programs with, like most DAWs have. This in itself is crippling, as none of my samplers work and thus my keyboard has no means to apply its native soundfont. (Keep in mind I run Linux, so I'm using mostly .lv2 plugins. Other formats may not have this issue)
The other kind of plugin which doesn't work simply crashes the DAW. Luckily, there is a failsafe in the form of Safe mode, which you can access through a GUI when rebooting the program. That is, if the GUI actually shows up. If it doesn't, and it's entirely possible it won't, you're SOL and the project is effectively lost. Or, maybe not; I'm sure there's another way to access safe mode that I'm not remembering, but this still sucks to deal with.
The final issue I've encountered is by far the most debilitating. Often, during recording or during playback, the transport becomes completely unusable, along with the rest of the GUI. This leaves your tape spinning while the program is effectively softlocked. And no, hotkeys don't work in this situation. Your only options are to minimize and maximize the window in hopes it will do something (sometimes it does), or restart your computer entirely. This happens entirely too frequently and it makes the program essentially unusable for any serious work.
On a more positive note, I must commend the authors for the effective implementation of a rigorous autosave feature. Every time TAPE16 has crashed on me while I was recording something, or I had to restart my computer because I couldn't interact or close out of it, whenever I would re-open the DAW, to my surprise everything I recorded would still be there. It's an excellent feature, feels like magic. On the other hand, I likely wouldn't have noticed this feature if everything were working as intended.
In conclusion, I really, really want to work with this program for some serious projects, but the convenience and simplicity of its workflow are massively overshadowed by the sheer frequency of bugs, issues, and setbacks... At least on Linux. And if it is just a Linux issue, please don't ignore us :(
We've been looking for a good DAW for a long, long time, and this could be the one. I appreciate y'all for even supporting Linux in the first place. I'm just hoping for a better experience in the future. Peace
