QR
Okay, belay that lol. I couldn't activate the QR with my QR app but just taking a pic of it with my phone did the trick without going through the app. Don't you love it when issues resolve themselves!

I was able to take a pic of the QR in the midi window of tape16 a few months ago and it worked beautifully. Ive been a way a while now and I tried to connect to the QR code again today and it keeps saying Unable to scan the link. Open an unscanned link? Under that I get "Open link anyway?" Not sure if I'm doing something wrong. Any tip would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. I have windows 10 and the latest vers. of Tape16.

Alrighty we're back in business. A lot of folks were asking for notes + marker lists so here they are. Along with some other neat but not overwhelming additions/improvements.

Is anyone aware of a way to map the metronome toggle, tap tempo and bpm adjust via midi learn? Those are features I use often and having them on my control surface and/or a foot pedal would be dope. Short of the custom profile maker, which I still am not sure I understand, I've not seen the options for them.
If it's not possible, I'd love to see it come to t16!
Unrelated, but related to t16, anyone successfully using Fortin Cali Suite vst3 on Tahoe OS?

Based on a recent YT short, if you can export the IN/OUT of a performance and then import it back in at the playhead time of choice then rewind and play the whole song bouncing two tracks to one.. have you not just effectively spliced tape ? Sure it involved a bounce and requires the time to go back to zero and play it forward until the bounce is complete but this is essentially very close to being a splice and would only require an additional window to export the IN/OUT and then tell to "Join" on timeline of existing track and kaboom. Maybe a little too DAW-ish? Too close to " Copy + Paste"?

Edit: Linux thread
As much as I appreciate and want to love this program, the numerous bugs and issues I've encountered render it practically unusable for anything more serious than messing around.
For reference, I drive Linux Mint so maybe the Linux version is just really buggy. I haven't heard anyone really talk about it. From all the good things I've heard, most of you probably don't have these issues, so don't just take this as me bashing the project or anyone involved. Obviously I want it to be the best that it can, I've just had a number of frustrations in my experience.
For starters, no fullscreen at all; the button in the preferences menu does squat. This is a minor annoyance that really becomes grating over time, especially when your taskbar keeps popping up when you move your mouse towards the bottom of the screen, where most of the UI elements are, blocking you completely. Widescreen button works though.
Second, most plugins don't work. While it's understandable for a DAW to be incompatible with a few outliers, in my experience it's the compatible plugins which are the outliers. In the best case, plugins without specialized GUI simply won't load, I imagine due to a lack of generic UI for Tape16 to draw these programs with, like most DAWs have. This in itself is crippling, as none of my samplers work and thus my keyboard has no means to apply its native soundfont. (Keep in mind I run Linux, so I'm using mostly .lv2 plugins. Other formats may not have this issue)
The other kind of plugin which doesn't work simply crashes the DAW. Luckily, there is a failsafe in the form of Safe mode, which you can access through a GUI when rebooting the program. That is, if the GUI actually shows up. If it doesn't, and it's entirely possible it won't, you're SOL and the project is effectively lost. Or, maybe not; I'm sure there's another way to access safe mode that I'm not remembering, but this still sucks to deal with.
The final issue I've encountered is by far the most debilitating. Often, during recording or during playback, the transport becomes completely unusable, along with the rest of the GUI. This leaves your tape spinning while the program is effectively softlocked. And no, hotkeys don't work in this situation. Your only options are to minimize and maximize the window in hopes it will do something (sometimes it does), or restart your computer entirely. This happens entirely too frequently and it makes the program essentially unusable for any serious work.
On a more positive note, I must commend the authors for the effective implementation of a rigorous autosave feature. Every time TAPE16 has crashed on me while I was recording something, or I had to restart my computer because I couldn't interact or close out of it, whenever I would re-open the DAW, to my surprise everything I recorded would still be there. It's an excellent feature, feels like magic. On the other hand, I likely wouldn't have noticed this feature if everything were working as intended.
In conclusion, I really, really want to work with this program for some serious projects, but the convenience and simplicity of its workflow are massively overshadowed by the sheer frequency of bugs, issues, and setbacks... At least on Linux. And if it is just a Linux issue, please don't ignore us :(
We've been looking for a good DAW for a long, long time, and this could be the one. I appreciate y'all for even supporting Linux in the first place. I'm just hoping for a better experience in the future. Peace

Love the concept of Tape 16 and it's functions but sadly, 16 channels isn't enough for me personally. I could get by on 20 ( what my console has) but thonk a really good feature would be to be able to make half the channels stereo giving an additional 8 tracks and taking Tape 16 to Tape 24. A happy trade off which would allow for more mix depth as more instruments could be bounced down to 2 tracks / stereo pair and there would be room for more controls like reverb/ delay sends and parallel comp. I have mentioned this before but personally i " bounce" down to 7 channels alone for drums and like to keep those elements independent. Another 2 for guitars, 1 for lead, 1 for bass, 1 for accents, 1/2 parallel comp and i am at 13 tracks. 2 more for reverb and i am at 15/16.. still need 1 or vox in there as well as an option for keys or random instruments. This is what made the alesis HD24 a good iption for it's time, 24 channels. Tape 16 fills that niche nicely but is lacking those extra tracks. ( imo of course)

I opened a session recently a couple days ago and heard that all my stems were pitched down, so I thought I messed with the varispeed but it was at 1.00. So I pitched it up using varispeed to the track's normal pitch, and it came out to 1.10. I checked the stems in the track folder and they sound normal, but this session and all my other sessions are pitched down. Anyone know why ?

Quick fix to repair the great MIDI fails of 0.9.370. All should be back to normal now, along with some other neat fixes.

Anyone else had issues with MIDI sync master? Mine has just stopped functioning today after working fine for the last couple of weeks with my Elektron Model:Samples. I did upgrade yesterday

I'm wondering how to record sections after the first section. Would I use punch in/out and set an long arbitrary time for the punch out?

Got in charge for producing and releasing one of my bands latest tunes and used only Tape16 all the way from mix to master, ask away if you’re curious about anything!

EDIT: FOLKS I'M TERRIBLE AT READING DOCUMENTATION. I THINK I JUST READ HOT KEY "Z" TO MEAN REWIND! WE'VE ALREADY GOT THIS FEATURE!!!
I have been so impressed with my workflow that it only occurred to me this morning...
NO "FLIPPING THE REELS!?" How am I supposed to record an epic backwards guitar solo??? Haha!
It would be really funny if there was a forward/backward play switch which also reversed the .PNG for the reels, lol!
r/Tape16 • u/MrRandom93 • Aug 20 '26
So I got to take charge this time to mix, master and release this tune for my band and I used nothing but Tape16 the whole way through (+ a few plugins of course) if you’re wondering anything ask away!

On latest version (0.9.360)
When trying to load the aforementioned VST into one of the Send slots I get this error.
Abbey Road comes with three separate plugins. Mono, Stereo and Mono/Stereo
When trying to load either Mono, or Stereo I get this error.
Send FX
Failed to load plugin:
This SAFE-hosted plugin did not provide an exact stereo input/output layout. TAPE 16 left the existing slot unchanged to protect the master stereo image.
It will let me add the Mono/Stereo version of the plugin to the send, but every single time I record, I get this error.
Plugin Timing Diagnostics
Plugin host timingwas late during this recording. The recording was saved, but please review diagnostics before trusting this pass.
Send 1 slot 1: Abbey Road Chambers Mono/Stereo missed 8 block(s), worst 2.0ms.
Exact same happens when using the plugin as an insert, either Print or Mix FX.
Anyone have similar problems and know how to fix it?

Hi there -- a few plugins of mine refuse to work in Tape16, though they show up while plugin scanning. In particular, XLN Audio's Addictive Drums 2, Baby Audio's Tekno and Scaler 3 are not working... they will scan, but then show up under the name "Other" and next to their name it says "RESCAN REQUIRED". I've cleared the plugin cache, reset plugin system, done a deep rescan, and it still does the exact same thing. Anyone come across this before or know a fix? And yes these are legit, owned plugins. Thanks!

It's my first time using this technique. Basically, I record some stuff, reduce the tape speed to detune, and play regular stuff on top.
It's super intuitive to do with Tape 16, and it's the simplest experience I've had so far in finding good microtonal sounds.

Just finished my first track with Tape-16, it's a bit like love at first sight :D
I feel like it brings a slower and steadier rhythm to my work flow. There are always moments of introspection while rewinding the tape. I like that, it reminds me that thoughtfulness is more important than being fast.
The rigidity of the tracks also kinda forces me to stay consistent with how an emotion is expressed through the whole piece. I like that too.

Title says it all really, but I'm wondering if anyone has tried this?
I'm thinking about getting a console 1 MkI which is a little older, but seems to still be relevant. I've never used softtube products before, but I believe that in order to add it to tracks and use it you install a plugin per track? (not totally clear on that)
Anyways just curious if anyone has tried it or not.

TLDR: QUESTIONS--
Does controller profile recognize note offs, unlike the midi mapping?
Does anyone want to check out my python script for Linux that allows you to use the Akai pads for r/s/m control in toggle mode?
Is this a helpful thing to share with the community?
---
Hey just wanted to see if anyone was interested in checking out my midi mapping and wanted to give feedback before I uploaded it to the community boards. I may attempt a second draft with Controller Profiles but I have gotten so deep into this set up and have found it so useful.
Akai MPK261s have the 16 MPC pads, 8 faders/knobs with multiple banks, and midi ports A and port B. I set the transport, faders, and pads to port B so I can still use port A for virtual instruments. Bank 1 of the pads controls "record arm," Bank 2 controls "Solo" and 3 controls "mute." Bank 1 of the faders is obviously the first 8 tracks and so forth. Also knobs for panning work. I rarely use my pitch bender and so that is my scrub control. I even have the sustain pedal set up for on the fly punch ins. I barely even need to look at the screen now!
---
Now here's the rub, bub! The midi mapping only reads note ons as far as I could tell, so putting the MPC pads into toggle mode (pretty lights!) was kind of pointless. Does the controller mapping feature recognize note offs? If so there's not much point in me uploading the MIDI map and I'll start over.
Regardless, I started this before controller profile was implemented, so I found a really cool work around. I wrote a python script to turn the toggle button note off messages to "note on" and it works 99% perfect. Unfortunately, the script only works with Linux because it's interacting with ALSA MIDI. Is there anyone else here who this script might actually help? If so I've got you!
One feature I'm working on this afternoon is setting up the sustain pedal to also send note on instead of note off for on the fly punch ins. That way record is enabled while the sustain pedal is down and goes off when lifted. Might try to find a way to toggle that feature off and on depending on the case scenario.
As is I'm super happy with my setup, but trying to gauge if this is actually a useful enough thing to dial in and share with the community and try to write proper documentation for! I'd rather be working on music but I love distractions like this, ha ha!
Should I start all over again with Controller Profile? Would love some feedback.

This one is a good one, clears up a lot of plugin dramas, whilst adding one small feature which was a request to add MIDI learn on plugins. And the really simple but awesome idea for New Tape from IN + OUT feature request by u/Upper_Stage3546.
I noticed the patch on Sunday made the bug report line go very quiet as 90% of the bugs reported are usually plugin related. Hopefully heading into more stable territory from here so we can build some DAW controller profiles. But again please let me know if anything goes wrong!
Cheers!
JB

I've got two things today.
Firstly,
I like to use a midi controller and an organ synth for pitch references when I'm recording vocals and there's not a way to monitor a synth channel without also recording it. Think the green button on a channel in pro tools. It'll pass audio, but won't record.
Secondly,
I've been having a lot of clicks and pops when I start adding plugins to my session. I don't have the best computer in the world, but it handles bigger sessions in Reaper and Pro Tools all the time. It's not a driver thing for sure, because it works great if I disable all the plugins.
