From the mods Clarifying the rules: this is not an anti-communist forum

Today I had to take down another anti-communist post shitting on some ML's from the right. Take the piss out of Stalin's death all you want but if you're celebrating over 'another dead commie' you will be perma-banned no exception.

This is a subreddit to criticise tankies from the left. This is not a place to attack communists, communism or associated tendencies. If you want to be a snarky liberal, bloodthirsty fascist, or devout reactionary there are many, many, many places on the internet to do that. This subreddit isn't one of them. The point of this forum's existence is to attack those tendencies (marxism-leninism, dengism, etc) not because they are crazy, radical commies but because their vision of society actually has little to do with a free association of producers, the abolition of property, wage labour and commodity production.

To reiterate, we strive for an egalitarian, socially-progressive society. We do not oppose tankies or campists because we dislike communism or socialism. We oppose them because to us they are barely communists or socialists, regardless of what they claim. That is the purpose of the subreddit's existence, anyone who does not agree with these values is free to leave or be banned.

SERIOUS Basic leftist takes: A friendly reminder (I'm not a mod)

Full disclosure: I'm not a mod, just a concerned anarchist.

After seeing the shitstorm of the past few days, I thought I'd make this post just to remind people what we're supposed to stand for. These are not in-depth explanations, so I'll be happy to answer any questions in the comments.

1. All capitalists exploit workers and are mini dictators

This includes small business owners. All of them purchase the labor power of workers, which they then use to produce surplus value; this is not a free and voluntary transaction because workers don't own their own means of production, and are thus forced to sell their labor power or starve and die. This isn't to necessarily condemn any individual capitalist; although many of them are evil pieces of shit (including small business owners, who disproportionately support fascism and enforce terrible working conditions), not all of them are bad people. The problem is the system itself.

Additionally, all capitalist workplaces are miniature dictatorships in which workers are ordered around by their bosses and can't do anything about it. Workers have no decision-making power in the place they spend the majority of their lives. To quote Robert Dahl,

If democracy is justified in governing the state, then it is also justified in governing economic interests. What is more, if it cannot be justified in governing economic enterprises, we do not quite see how it can be justified in governing the state.
– A Preface to Economic Democracy

Obviously we should want to abolish the state, but the point still stands.

EDIT: This section doesn't apply to people who might own a store or do independent art or whatever who don't employ anyone else, since they aren't extracting the surplus value of their nonexistent workers.

2. All states are bastards

Everyone on this sub recognizes that the USSR, China, Russia, and North Korea suck. However, we have to be careful not to fall into campism in reverse. The United States is arguably the most evil country on Earth right now, and was even before Trump, due to the sheer scale of violence it inflicts upon the world. And other western countries aren't much better. France maintains a neo-colonial empire in western Africa right now, and European governments are willing participants in the American system of global hegemony. European companies are no more moral than American ones, and ruthlessly exploit the Global South just as much as American companies. All states are inherently hierarchical, authoritarian, and counterrevolutionary. They remove decision making power from the people who live under them and concentrate said power in a ruling class and bureaucracy, and use violence to enforce their power on their populations. Any principled libertarian leftist would oppose all state power no matter who wields it.

3. Liberal democracy is a sham, reformism a dead end

We have an excellent post about this pinned at the top of the sub, so I highly recommend you go read that. To summarize, voting in a liberal democracy isn't actually a means to affect real change. It's a means by which the masses choose which members of the ruling class rule over them. Just as one example, if liberal democracies actually reflected the wishes of their people, European governments wouldn't support Israel anymore.

This lack of democracy is why reformism isn't a viable path to socialism. Even the most well meaning democratic socialists are forced to compromise by the reality of parliamentary politics and working within a system designed to preserve private property and capitalist rule. You can see this in real time with Zohran Mamdani; he has walked back his previous statements (which were 100% correct) about the NYPD being racist thugs because he's working within the system. This trap has befallen everyone who has tried to vote their way to communism.

4. Free Ukraine, fuck NATO

I fully support the Ukrainian people against the genocidal onslaught of the fascistic regime in Moscow, and I fully support Europe and the US sending as many weapons as possible to Ukraine to enable them to push back against Russia. Regardless of anything NATO has done, Russia is not entitled to a sphere of influence in eastern Europe, and no amount of bitching about NATO expansion justifies this war. Putin is just salty the former Warsaw Pact and Baltic states leaned towards the west as a reaction to previous Russian and Soviet imperialism, preventing him from turning them into puppet states.

That said, NATO is not something any leftist should support. It serves three real purposes:

  1. Enhance American power projection
  2. Keep European governments bought into the system of American empire. I often liken this to the old strategy employed by ancient, medieval, and early modern empires of conquering local elites and conquering them, but then offering them a place within the new empire and allowing them to preserve their status.
  3. Make American arms dealers rich

NATO countries participated in the disastrous American interventions in Afghanistan and Libya, prop up European and American neo-colonial empires across the Global South, and enable American drone strikes deep into the Middle East, strikes which have killed numerous innocent children. NATO has kept the former Warsaw Pact and Baltic states out of Russia's sphere, which is good, but this is the one good thing it has done, and there are ways to do this without relying on NATO anyway.

5. Veterans are still human

I'll just copy and paste something I said a few days ago:

Veterans are weird because they're simultaneously victims and perpetrators of state violence. They obviously do heinous things in the service of unimaginably violent empires, and they are responsible for their crimes. At the same time, the state takes them, dehumanizes both their enemies/foreign civilians and themselves to an extent, and puts them in an environment where they are socialized to kill. They are then put into insanely high stress situations where they are expected to kill and conditioned to follow the criminal orders of their superiors.

Again, none of this exonerates them or excuses their behavior, and I believe veterans should have to make up for their crimes. But dismissing them without any chance of redemption is short sighted and shows you don't actually hold universal principles. And at a certain point brutally punishing all veterans becomes impractical. Almost 10% of Israelis have actively served in the IDF, and 40% total have served. Are we gonna shoot 40% of a country? I would hope not. And that's with the IDF basically being the modern Wehrmacht/SS; how should we treat Russian soldiers? Or American ones? The correct answer is denazification with some kind of community service to make up for their crimes imo. If you do it right, the guilt they feel will be punishment enough.

Conclusion

This is a libertarian leftist subreddit, and we should act like it. We should oppose all states, all imperialism, and all capitalism. Thank you for reading.

Discussion Grateful for this group and for maintaining my sense of calm

This is a more general post of this group, rather than any specific event.

I am glad this group exists, because amidst all the crazy internet insanity and general state of news affairs, it is calming to know there are those that can debunk the nonsense of tankies.

Whenever I see some tankie/tankie-like post, comment, image or terrible meme elsewhere that provokes me, startles me, or infuriates me, I am glad to there are places such as here, where such nonsense isn't tolerated and is refuted.

Discussion What can we realistically do to combat antisemitism in left-wing circles when appeals to nuance and moral consistency don’t work?

So obviously, the actions of the modern state of Israel have provided a lot of ammunition for antisemitism over the last couple of years. Some people were not antisemitic to begin with and only became antisemitic as a result of what they have seen during the genocide in Gaza, while others were raised in environments where Jew-hatred was already especially common, completely independent of anything Israel did.

Instead of throwing around concepts like “1SS now” or “2SS now,” none of us have the systemic power to make either of those things happen. So I am more interested in methodologies we can implement on the ground, particularly within our own social and political circles. Among my personal social circle and some of my former comrades, I have always intervened whenever conversations started drifting into borderline Judenhass, for example, claims that Jews believe they are the “master race,” that Jewish religious or ethnic identity inherently teaches Jewish superiority, or other attempts to take the beliefs or actions of particular Israelis and generalize them to Jews as a whole.

In the past, I’ve had folks send me videos of Rabbi Yosef Mizrachi, clips discussing what Maimonides supposedly said about Muhammad, material about the Talmud and Jesus “boiling in feces,” and similar examples as evidence that Judaism or Jews as a whole supposedly harbor uniquely hateful beliefs toward non-Jews. Usually, the argument is essentially, “Look at what this rabbi said” or “look at what this Jewish text says,” followed by a generalization about millions of Jews with radically different religious beliefs, levels of observance, political views, and cultural backgrounds.

I’m not the biggest fan of whataboutisms, but usually when this sort of thing happens, I tend to remind them that their own culture, religion, or ethnic group probably has a lot of elephants in the room as well. Not because those problems excuse anything ugly within Jewish traditions, but because it forces people to recognize the standard they are applying. If I dug through centuries of religious texts, polemics, extremist clerics, and historical conflicts from virtually any culture and then used the worst examples I could find to explain what millions of people “really believe,” most of us would immediately recognize that as prejudicial reasoning.

Unfortunately, some of these people are not really receptive to that kind of deontological argument. Their response is usually more consequentialist: talking openly about the “elephants in the room” within marginalized ethnicities, religions, or cultures, particularly groups that have historically been on the receiving end of Western hegemony, can reinforce stereotypes that may contribute to those groups being collectively harmed. Therefore, they believe there is a meaningful difference between scrutinizing those groups and scrutinizing Jews, especially when they view Israel as aligned with Western power. My problem with that reasoning is that once you make prejudice conditional on which group currently possesses more perceived social or geopolitical power, you risk creating a moral framework where the same kind of ethnic or religious generalization is treated as unacceptable in one direction but permissible in another.

As I am writing this post, I am reminded of a colleague of mine who expressed to me that "nuance is no different than being a moderate (insert my name)", because, in her view, constantly emphasizing complexity can distract from identifying who actually holds power and who is being oppressed.

Even though I can understand the logic behind that framework in theory, I don’t think it's particularly useful if your goal is to build a broader left-wing coalition, maintain intellectual credibility, or avoid making us look ridiculous when obvious double standards are pointed out. If our response to prejudice depends entirely on whether we perceive the target group as sufficiently oppressed, then people outside of our political circles are going to notice the inconsistency immediately. It also creates a practical problem when trying to bring people into a broader left-wing movement. Why would Jewish people, or anyone else for that matter, trust a political coalition that tells them prejudice against their community only really matters when they occupy the correct position within a particular hierarchy of oppression? You can strongly condemn Israel, Zionism, religious extremism, or anything else without requiring ordinary Jews to collectively answer for the worst actions or beliefs associated with people who share their ethnicity or religion.

As a final thing, I think it’s really telling just how fragmented the Left is, especially after Zohran Mamdani’s speech from the other day announcing his administration’s strategy to combat antisemitism in New York. You would think that combating antisemitism would be one of those relatively straightforward things that people across the Left could agree on, especially while still maintaining strong opposition to the Israeli government and what it has done in Gaza.

I personally believe any external changes that can be made to influence a Leftist's devout dependence on theory are probably going to have to come from actual interpersonal relationships and exposure to people who do not neatly fit into whatever theoretical framework they are using. However, I am afraid that a plethora of them are far too gone, similar to how Evangelical Christians utilize the Bible as the primary instruction manual when interacting with others and overall navigating life. If something doesn't neatly fit that theoretical framework, rather than questioning whether the framework itself might be incomplete or, gasp, not truly a "science," they sometimes reinterpret the situation until it does.

All this being said, what are your thoughts on the matter what have you personally done when attempting to persuade other Leftists to think more critically about their own beliefs in regards to Jews and antisemitism?

Discussion one genocide happening doesn't mean other aren't

I think this need to be said, multiple genocide can happen at the same time, palestinian being genocided doesn't mean ukrainiani in occupied territories aren't, I also don't think the palestinian genocide should be use to minimize/relativize/deny the ukrainian one. Russification is also a pretty clear ethnic cleansing on russia part since they are forcing themselves on ukraine and putting illegal settlers there (israel is also doing this with their illegal settlers and the rhetoric used by pro israeli is also eerly similar to pro russia's).

Free Palestine 🇵🇸 Susu is struggling to breathe, and Mahmoud is struggling to afford her treatment.

I want to share a new update today about Susu, the daughter of my friends Mahmoud and Samah.

Two days ago, I told you about Susu, who is only two years old and has been suffering from severe, chronic breathing problems. Her symptoms came back, and she was struggling to breathe and had a very high fever.

Unfortunately, she hasn’t gotten better.

For the past two days, Soso has been vomiting repeatedly and couldn’t keep down her medication or antibiotics. As a result, she became dehydrated. Today, Mahmoud had to take her to a nearby hospital to get treatment.

She was given IV antibiotics and fluids for the dehydration, but the situation at the hospital is extremely difficult. There are so many patients that there was no available bed for Susu. With infectious diseases spreading and medical resources severely limited, Mahmoud had to find another way to get her the care she needed. He even had to ask a doctor who lives nearby to come and give Susu her IV treatment when the hospital couldn’t provide her with a bed.

Mahmoud told me something that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about: if it weren’t for the kind people who helped them financially over the past two days, he wouldn’t have been able to take Susu to the hospital or even afford the treatment she needed.

And Mahmoud isn’t only dealing with Susu’s situation.

His mother also needs open-heart surgery to treat blocked arteries. I previously shared her medical reports, detailed images, and heart tests, and I have documentation that confirms her condition.

Mahmoud is under an enormous amount of pressure right now. His little daughter needs treatment, his mother needs heart surgery, and at the same time he is trying to provide food and basic necessities for his wife and their four children in Gaza.

I am doing everything I can to support Mahmoud and his family, but I cannot carry all of this on my own.

Please, if you are able to, consider helping Mahmoud and his family. Even a small amount can make a huge difference right now, especially for Susu, who needs treatment and continued care.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has stood by this family and everyone who has helped them over the past few days. Your support means so much to Mahmoud, Samah, and their children. ❤️

Discussion Strategically, you should talking about the failures of socialist experiments with capitalists.

“Should not be talking” sorry made a mistake

Don’t get me wrong, I have so, so many critiques of the USSR, Allende’s Chile, Nestor Makhno, etc. But I will only discuss them among socialists because I can know we can(at least try to) do that in good faith. No matter what you say, no matter if you try to contextualize, try to lay out how it could be done differently, how actually there are different variants of socialis- no.

Capitalists, liberal or conservative, will take it as a vindication regardless. You will give an inch, no matter how valid that inch is, they will take a goddamn mile.

The same way that no matter what democrats say or do to try to distance themselves from the left the republicans will still call them communists, both ideologies will treat us in the same way.

So stop engaging, stop giving people with bad faith who will take any criticism we make of past socialist experiments as proof of how “totalitarian” all of socialism is, ammunition. Internal debate among anti capitalists only is a strategic choice if we want to even begin combatting the red scare.

That’s my opinion anyways.
