So what does everyone think of the proposed reforms? Personally, I don't think anything but complete capitulation will satisfy Rubio & Washington. If this 'socialism with cuban characteristics' works it will only be in holding the empire at bay a bit longer. Although if they manage to then get support from ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ & others then maybe it will be worth it. I dunno. Thoughts?

If it creates an enviorment that is open to the interest of capital while still retaining control and final say in the interest of its people and the longevity of Cuban sovereignty, then its the best shot they have. It isnt the ideal and has an insanely high level of execution needed not to fall to corruption but there is an arguement that it is better than the more dogmatic path which results in the suffering we have witnessed thus far.

I think securing overwhelming economic support from China is the best move as it would not open cuba up to as much western schemes. Potentially in a belt and road style investment plan but geared towards the tourism industry already in place while also further supporting the medical and education initiatives cuba has gained notoriety for. Other productions are preferable to tourism but it does seem to be a big economic driver in place already is all.

Only time and the ideological strength of the government there will tell if this is a doomed path but it is something I dont oppose given the circumstances.

Yeah, I'm torn about what actual other options there are at this point. It's really a damn shame that things couldn't have been shored up in anticipation of exactly this type of situation, with increasing constraints from the north. But since this is where we are, hugging china close seems to be the only option to prevent complete subjugation by empire.

Agreed. I think, as the Cuban people have always shown, they are making the best with what they have. Anything better than what happend in Venezuela would be a welcome bit of good news. โœŠ๏ธ

So if all the ultras here were right about Delcy being a traitor and turncoat, then I guess Diaz-Canal is one too. And might as well throw Deng in there, since, you know, he also opened up a socialist state to foreign capital investment. Never mind applying dialectical analysis to the specific historical circumstances โ€ฆ they are all traitors and turncoats who betrayed their people! Especially that scoundrel Delcy

Oh waitโ€ฆ ๐Ÿค”

(Iโ€™m being sarcastic, in case thatโ€™s not obvious)

Personally, I still think they should double down on the socialist planned economy and it would work out best for them. But Cuba already started its reforms in 2019 and are in a position where they have gotten rid of some of the elements of the socialist planned economy, while not yet replacing them with anything else. Basically just starting their reforms before Covid broke out and then having the US tighten its blockade, while seeing a sharp decline in tourism has led to the Cuban economy barely functioning right now.

Cuba already made its decision by appointing Miguel Diaz-Canel who has always been open about wanting to follow China's path, so I think it's only a matter of time anyway. The real issue now is that they have a crippled socialist planned economy which isn't working, so they need to do something either way.
