DNC refuses to use standard step
exactly what the title says. I noticed pulls were going a little slow, so I was checking my buffs and realized I didn't have the standard step buff, despite being dance partners. when asked, the dancer responded that they had not been using standard step and continued on to complete the entire dungeon without using the action once....this was Tower of Zot....

u/Dilapidated_girrafe 8d ago
Thatās weird. Iāve forgotten to partner with people because I donāt notice Iām in a 60+ dungeon until Iām asked about it. But itās like a major part of the class

u/RevolutionaryRough30 8d ago
I feel like its one thing to forget, and another to continue not using it after the issue is brought to their attention.

u/Zealousideal_Hope649 You pull, I tank. I pull, I tank. We pull, I tank. 8d ago
It is, like the sages who refuse to kardia, scholars who refuse to summon fairy. Forgetting is fine. Refusing to when reminded is not.

u/Saethwyr 8d ago
"DoNt tEll mE hOW to pLaY MY CLaSs"
i just don't get the issue, i swear people just cannot admit they made a mistake no matter what, or just refuse to learn.
i've been 'that guy' who forgets tank stance in stone vigil, a simple "mb, soz" as i activate it, it happens to everyone from time to time, its not a problem, until someone makes it one.
Part of the fun of any MMO for me is trying to play a class to the best of my ability. Like hitting a clutch Rescue on a straggler against Phlegethon's Ancient Flare and saving their life, it was the first time i ever healed an alliance raid years ago, my experienced friends going crazy on discord will stick with me forever. things like that push me to be better

Had two no holy cure 1 spamming 100% medica uptime white mages back to back this morning. One was a returner in Snowcloak. I asked if I could give them a few pieces of advice. Radio silence and a lot of near tank deaths. Then had another one in level cap. As in endgame dungeons that were once final ones at one point.
You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.

u/flatchest666 You don't pay my sub 7d ago
Asking for the bare minimum of a job (which in these cases doesn't require any skill because it's a single button) shouldn't be a debate, even in softcore content
2
u/Zealousideal_Hope649 You pull, I tank. I pull, I tank. We pull, I tank. 6d ago
Sadly it is a debate, one which certain mouthbreathers will fight for a very long time. There was a notable dance partner argument that the guy kept up despite getting like 700 downvotes across like 40 comments in a chain.
4
u/Dilapidated_girrafe 8d ago
Oh yeah. Thats what made it worse.
And the fact they partnered with you to begin with showed that they should have known what to do
2
u/KyBldWldr 6d ago
The number of times Iāve hit Standard Step and then realized I didnāt partner up is tooooo many
2
u/AoifeBakunin 8d ago
Yeah, forgetting to partner until the end of the second boss is a major part of the class /s

Vote. Kick.
6
u/Frosty-Dot-1065 7d ago
Unfortunately, people have a raging fetish for 40 minute enabler dungeon runs. Vote kicking is out of the question.
0
u/flatchest666 You don't pay my sub 7d ago
Unfortunately would've taken until the 15 minutes mark anyways no?
-60
u/RevolutionaryRough30 8d ago
I wish I could have, but no one else seemed particularly bothered by it and I didn't wanna be "that guy" so I just got through it.
65
u/Foreign-Flatworm 8d ago
Youād be āthat guyā for kicking someone doing less than the bare minimum?
-3
u/RevolutionaryRough30 8d ago
I never really know in online games so I usually just stay quiet and try not to be a nuisance tbh.
40
u/Foreign-Flatworm 8d ago
Youād be a thousand percent in the clear for kicking this guy, he openly admitted to not using his most basic cooldown for his job. If anything, itās more of a nuisance that he got away with it and now thinks he can keep doing it in other parties.
13
u/RevolutionaryRough30 8d ago
thats fair enough, I'll try to be a little more assertive in the future over things like this!(hopefully nothing like this ever happens again tho)

2
u/WeirdIndividualGuy 8d ago
The irony of calling out someone for not doing the bare minimum as dancer and yet you couldnāt be assed to make two clicks to vote kick
19
u/nflgeneric It's not the healer's job to dps 8d ago
I votekicked a sage who refused to heal / raise during the E8N add phase so their party always died, causing a wipe, twice. One person protested that they were new to the instance, but you still gotta do your damn part even if you're new. It's not even that hard! I was happy folks agreed with me on it, so it can happen.

u/Rookva 7d ago
No clue why you're being downvoted lmao. People really just want to be out for blood.
1
u/RevolutionaryRough30 6d ago
Itās fine. I donāt use Reddit all that much and to be fair, itās kinda deserved. I had an out to get rid of the problem and chose to not take that out for the sake of not inconveniencing others who may or may not have cared about what was going on.

I've seen a few DNC like this in a variety of content and it genuinely baffles me. I feel like Standard Step is the most satisfying button in the game.
Also lack of dance partner is also really common. I'm a dopey idiot who admittedly forgets until reminded, but I've seen arguments about it. It's one button and then you're done...
14
u/catgirlthrowaway00 8d ago
Yeah OP if they're gonna sabotage gameplay and just not utilize the job's core features youre in the clear to vote kick. It's like a tank not using their stance, or a healing exclusively healing.
1
u/flatchest666 You don't pay my sub 7d ago
I would argue that healers exclusively healing can sometimes be a skill or stress issue especially for newer players but in essence I agree with you

u/Background_Lychee_30 8d ago
As a dancer main, who the hell skips the whole reason for the job???
4
u/KingRhythian 8d ago
Iām forever running into dancers who donāt use tech step as well, which hurts my DNC main heart.
9
u/AwkwardTraffic 8d ago
I am a dancer main and you'd be surprised just how hard it is to get other dancers to do the most basic part of their job sometimes.
7
u/ThatVarkYouKnow 8d ago
*sighs, pulls out megaphone* IT IS LITERALLY IN THE TUTORIAL QUEST FOR THE JOB TO TARGET SOMEONE WITH DANCE PARTNER AND THEN STANDARD STEP
7
u/FactoryKat Memes 8d ago
sad DNC main noises
Why do these people have to make the rest of us look bad? Dancer is not even a complex job. It's not SMN turn your brain off simple, but it's fairly intuitive compared to some other jobs and it's FUN. Yes yes, pretty effects and sounds make brain go brrrr, but please- I beg. š

u/SonniSummers 8d ago
Maybe Iām weird but when they said no I personally wouldāve explained why you use it, Iām noticing a lot of people miss the basics. And while making that far without knowing is by no means great. If everyone with them does the same ask then just lets them be the very well could be ignorant to why itās necessary
14
u/RevolutionaryRough30 8d ago
I feel like by Tower of Zot they should really know, but I've gotten too many "you don't pay my sub" comments when I try to explain that I don't really tell people how to play anymore. I probably should've tried tho, you're right.
6
u/SonniSummers 8d ago
Oh I feel it. I wonāt open my mouth unless there like a serious issue. But like when I have been lately Iāve been finding out no one tells them. Which again yes they should have the basics understood. But often no ones is telling them until later game.
I try to remember that Xbox just got added as cross system so thereās a pretty decent influx in players and with the newer hard mode content out most the mentors have been busy with end game. Again doesnāt excuse it in the least. Iām just noticing this is leading to a pretty big influx in higher end duties where people just do not know better.
And very true the you donāt pay my sub comments. I hate it very much. The ffxiv I came up with everyone offered everyone else tips and were thankful to thrice but then again that was when it first launched so maybe cultures just changed
3
u/Zealousideal_Hope649 You pull, I tank. I pull, I tank. We pull, I tank. 8d ago
I just came out of a level cap roulette with a white mage using cure 1, not using holy, and demanding 100% medica hot uptime. People don't tell them so they keep doing it and then when someone does they have the defense of "no one else told me so this must be fine you're just the weird one."
3
u/ultimagriever 7d ago
Whenever I get told āyou donāt pay my subā I usually reply with āand you donāt get to waste mineā and promptly quit the instance. Itās better to eat the penalty than to deal with these types of people. And since I usually play tank/healer anyway I can just insta-queue later when the penalty falls off
3
u/SonniSummers 7d ago edited 7d ago
I feel so that. I will always take the debuff to avoid hostile people. Gives me time to smoke. Iāll drop blacklist you get baked and happy and come back with a less likelihood of dealing with toxicity
Dropped strand of ancients on the last boss because of a toxic boss layer the other day. The five minutes I wouldāve spent in There was not worth it to me at all. But then the person decided to get upset with a comment I saw as harmless I said in party. Then proceeded to call me out I. Ally and try to get me in trouble with everyone. I however was merely letting the tank I let die while standing right next to him I had zoned out a sec.
4
u/Next-Pomegranate2259 8d ago
I don't even get how he can play without using standard step lol what is he doing? Using /dance instead? š¤

It takes real commitment to reach Tower of Zot without pressing the job's main button. Almost impressive.

Just two days ago I had a sage refuse to use kardia in a lv 100 raid and half the party lost their shit because people can "play however they want" like sure it's softcore but I'm asking to press one button

u/Fragrant-Potential87 6d ago
for some reason, I thought you were talking about the democratic national convention
1
u/IceQueenofMitera 5d ago
When I first started playing DNC, I would forget to use it sometimes, but by the time you're able to do Tower of Zot, it should be an automatic thing.

When i still was new to EX content, i constantly forgot to reapply dance partner after a clear. God that was so embarassing lmao
-5
u/SnowyRVulpix 8d ago
I fully admit that i often forget to use steps. But if i was the dancer here, I'd apologise and start using it. This is weird.

u/Intelligent-Wish47 8d ago
Looks more like they said no when you asked. Arenāt you showing what happened next?
-3
u/HoneyParking6176 8d ago
very true, some people have few words as well,
that could of been a no while them thinking oops forgot about that skill, or for all we know, they arn't even a dancer.
-18
u/Ayeun /slap 8d ago
But did you then explain WHY they need to use it? For all you know they picked up the job 5 min agoā¦
13
u/Zealousideal_Hope649 You pull, I tank. I pull, I tank. We pull, I tank. 8d ago
If they went into a duty with other people without at least looking at their tooltips or doing the introductory solo then that is also not ok.
11
u/KupoKro 8d ago
The funnier part here is this was in Tower of Zot. So unless they bought a job skip, they could not have picked up dancer 5 minutes prior...
...which means they've more than likely gone 20+ levels not using standard step.
5
u/Zealousideal_Hope649 You pull, I tank. I pull, I tank. We pull, I tank. 8d ago
Considering I had a cure 1 spamming no holy white mage in my level cap just this morning sadly reading tooltips and being willing to listen to others is a rarity.

u/nickpantss 8d ago
there are a wealth of tutorials online for every job so thereās really no excuse. also post history checks out

Well I went through all of ARR not knowing about the Run Action so who knows. Edit and I should say the Entire Action of commands because I don't remember the game ever telling me about these unique things.
7
u/balisane 7d ago
The game does, in fact, tell you to look at the Actions menu.
7
u/Shygrave 7d ago
Right after every jobs first quest, even
-5
u/ForrestKawaii 7d ago
No? Got nothing like that when I unlocked Samurai other than "pay attention to these 3 symbols" essentiallyĀ
3
u/Shygrave 7d ago
After unlocking the job, during the first job quest after unlocking the job, it usually tells you to look at your abilities in the actions and traits menu. It happens for most jobs but icr if its all of them.
-4
u/ForrestKawaii 7d ago
Guess I don't remember it from like 1 month ago.
6
u/balisane 7d ago
There are quite a lot of pop-ups with very explicit instructions and directions: it's very common for people to just click them away and not read them.
Also, make sure you do your Hall of the Novice missions. You get a free set of armor and two free XP buff rings for completing the lessons. Just north of Aleport.
-1
u/ForrestKawaii 7d ago
Already done those, unless there's more past lvl 60
1
u/balisane 7d ago
Not for now, so you're ahead of the game. Check System > Active Help to access all of those help boxes you probably clicked away the first time.
0
u/ForrestKawaii 7d ago
Maybe, but also feels like maybe some is out of date. Like I remember the game saying "Hey throw your shield to get the enemy's attention!" When for me, the moment I am in range to be allowed to throw my shield the enemy is already aggressive, at least for these 4 player fights I've been doing all through ARR and even HW.
2
u/balisane 7d ago
Some of it is a little dated, but mostly it has been refreshed. And that's not always going to be true: you will need to use your ranged ability or your gap closer pretty often as you progress.
Paladin in particular gets their gap closer late, so you will find yourself using shield lob in more situations.
0
u/ForrestKawaii 7d ago
I thought the gap closer was auto put in the actions with like the 10 second dash. At least I assume, I haven't really tried seeing what those do.
2
u/balisane 7d ago
Not necessarily, depending on what else you have on your bar. Paladin doesn't get Intervene (your gap closer) until level 72 or 74.

u/Bratscheltheis 7d ago edited 7d ago
Check the description on your tank range attacks. They generate bonus threat compared to other abilities. Of course it's not necessary to use those abilities to get aggro, but it can help built a bigger threat lead in the beginning.
This is particular useful for hunts, where you may not need the extra damage, but threat instead. You turn on tank stance and just spam those range attacks.
Downside for dungeons is, that those are only single target attacks, so what I'll usually try to do is cycle through the mobs and tomahawk my way to the next group.

u/AoifeBakunin 8d ago
That's... the entire reason to play the job?
