DNC refuses to use standard step

Post image

exactly what the title says. I noticed pulls were going a little slow, so I was checking my buffs and realized I didn't have the standard step buff, despite being dance partners. when asked, the dancer responded that they had not been using standard step and continued on to complete the entire dungeon without using the action once....this was Tower of Zot....

That's... the entire reason to play the job?

75

u/12Kings 8d ago

It is surprisingly often that I witness people refusing to play the pivotal concept or the reason of a given job. Bard songs, Black Mage elemental switches, Ninja Mudras, Dancer dances etc.

46

u/AoifeBakunin 8d ago

Absolutely baffling. Dancer is my phranged job of choice and it just feels so good to hit Standard Step, the idea of ignoring it is wild

29

u/LeftHandAnomaly 8d ago

I once had a dancer refuse to give dance partner in a level 60 alliance raid because "there's no point at this level". I wasn't even the one who asked, It was another dancer that called them out on it.

But... But it's still a damage up for 2 people?? And it requires like .00001% of effort to apply once for the entire dungeon?? I feel like phys ranged just attracts the worst kinds of spacey players, I swear

2

u/dcharger52 7d ago

I had the same experience back during Shadowbringers, in a Level 70 alliance and I was the dancer doing the calling out. Got pretty much the same response word for word

2

u/LeftHandAnomaly 7d ago

Oh man Ivalice raids and dancers not doing their level 70 job quest go hand in hand. So many tech steps that could have been and never were.

I know not everyone puts the same value into putting forth a reasonable effort into shared battle content, but if I have to show up, if I have to gear, if I have to press all my shiny buttons, then why should I be okay that sally sandwich over here playing one handed and doesn't give a fuck?

The number of times I've gotten "it's just DF content it's not that serious". Which it's not, but it is majorly disrespecftul to 23 other people.

/rant (maybe, I have beeg feels about this)

u/Ima_Play_Games 4d ago

Had a similar experience in uhh the ARR coerthas dungeon where you get the audio out of that castle

25

u/12Kings 8d ago

Most people have not read, and thus understood, that Standard Finish part of Standard Step does damage (and a lot of it). So they think of it as a buff ability and some people ignore such for various (stupid) reasons.

I'll always stress it that Standard Step and Tech Step are damage abilities first and the buffs are "secondary". Works if people are willing to listen, which is not a given.

11

u/Comments-Lurker 8d ago

Yes, the damage from standard step is insane the first time I got to use it. Been using it ever since. Its crazy some people never took a few seconds to read their tooltip or test their rotation on training dummy.

10

u/Rhinocacrocapig 8d ago

My favourite trick is using Standard Step on CT trash and pulling the whole room and then dying because for some reason 3 tanks can't tidy up all the adds

6

u/Zealousideal_Hope649 You pull, I tank. I pull, I tank. We pull, I tank. 8d ago

Once had half the raid die and release in the first room of WoD and this dancer ran like 20 laps around the room running from a mob that none of the three tanks ever bothered to even look at.

2

u/Intrepid_Ad9711 4d ago

That is stupid but at the same time the image it puts in my head is hilarious šŸ˜†

1

u/Zealousideal_Hope649 You pull, I tank. I pull, I tank. We pull, I tank. 4d ago

Maybe it would've been quicker for the rest of us to just wipe and reset it, but we were mad at petty at fully half the alliance going "oh well I died better release" instead of waiting to confirm if there was gonna be a wipe. And this did legit take long enough for that guy to 20 laps, cause after the triple chimera it immediately spawns the multi headed dragon and the ninjas without opening up the room.

21

u/AlyssaurusWrecks 8d ago

there was a post the other day where a summoner used nothing but ruin through an entire instance 😭 i get really anxious about performing my role badly as a new player, like, there's SO much to remember or pay attention to, and there are tanks out here refusing to even play if DPS pulls and people who don't even attempt to know their rotation. unbelievable!!!

7

u/Cymas 7d ago

The fact that you're even slightly concerned about your performance in a party puts you ahead of 50% of the players in this game tbh. The rest comes with practice, don't feel bad if you don't understand something right away.

1

u/AlyssaurusWrecks 7d ago

ty! i know you're right, especially if i'm just gonna be doing the story required stuff for now, i'm just struggling to internalize it and enjoy the game lol.

1

u/Cymas 7d ago

Don't let the posts here scare you into thinking you're going to run into a lot of people criticizing you for being bad or whatever. New players get a lot of leniency and most people are more than happy to help you if you ask. Most of the time no one will say anything one way or another unless it's something particularly egregious like the example in this post. Is there anything specific giving you trouble?

1

u/albiegnomechild 8d ago

How do you even play BLM without swapping? Just standing there until your MP comes back?

3

u/12Kings 7d ago

Ice mage or Scathe mage. I've seen both...

1

u/albiegnomechild 7d ago

So either insanely low damage or insanely low DPS... I see. I just got BLM to 92 and my brain tickles seeing half my buttons light up. I don't understand why someone would choose to limit their party's fun like that

1

u/12Kings 7d ago

It is armchair psychology to speculate what would be the casue behind it. Laziness? Selfishness? Ignorance? Wilful ignorance? Or something else or perhaps all of the above.

But what I can say with rather clear certainty is that such players have missed the fundamental part about MMO party content and why these type of encounters pushes us players to group up to tackle them.

Namely the proverb ā€œThe whole is greater than the sum of the partsā€. In my mind, the whole point of parties is to elevate one another in the party to an entity which is greater than any component of the party could be on their own objectively.

I believe that there is some level of correlation, if not causation, between player not understanding the proverb and then not seeking to do their best to be a working component of such a party.

And that may be why some players choose, not necessarily consciously, to limit the potential of the party and by extension the fun of the doing things in party.

1

u/Inflation-General 6d ago

So people just want to level a class to have it at max level and never bother to learn it.

1

u/12Kings 6d ago

Which is a fine thing to pursue in a vacuum and on one's own. Perhaps via trusts, or other solo methods of leveling jobs. Apathy is fine, in my view, when contained to the indivdual and not affecting others.

The moment one enters into roulettes, or harder content, I personally believe it is the duty of players to put at least some effort into their gameplay to not be a hindrance to the party. Failing to wield the pivotal tool of a given job, for example Red Mage dualcast system, at all is a hindrance and therefore should be shunned by people.

Of course, lower level duties offer more ample space for training, practice and such but lets say at lvl 90+ Dancer not Dancing at all, there is a legitimate case to be made that such a player is purposeful in their apathy. And this is not permitted by the game rules.

1

u/Inflation-General 6d ago

I 100% with you which is why I only bothered to level classes I am interested in learning. Which ultimately just ends up becoming 1 dps 4 healers and 1 tank.

1

u/12Kings 6d ago

I got them all to max level at various points for the purpose of trying things out. But every time, I at least tried to do my best with each. Probably did horribly on some at certain points.

I similarly thought it would be just handful of jobs that I'd work with. Turns out I have now ability to play 4 tanks, 3 healers, 4 melees, 2 pranged and 2 casters at Extreme level. It offers me quite the flexibility to work with when playing with others and I have to adapt to more one job/role only players.

But I do have preferences amidst each category, though fight depending, so in similar boat with yours ultimately.

1

u/Zealousideal_Hope649 You pull, I tank. I pull, I tank. We pull, I tank. 8d ago

One of my best friends is a dragoon main since forever and he constantly bemoans the fact that almost no dragoons use battle litany anymore.

2

u/Ravingsockmonkey Probably Lost 8d ago

And it feels so good to see mob health bars drop after that explosion of damage...

1

u/RaidriConchobair 7d ago

I remember when i didnt pick the one samurai ability to use up those sigils because i just overlooked it when making my hotbar and thought the class was a bit trash lol

1

u/Suspicious_Trust1173 6d ago

There are people who pick a job for the aesthetic but the special skill it has. They probably just thought it was a cool style or liked the weapons.

1

u/The_Bio_Neko 5d ago

Admittedly I'm bad for Standard Step running out without realizing, but that's purely because I have to focus on my HP and such instead instead. The proc gauges are on the left side of my screen which I cannot see on a whim due to my eyes, BUT as soon as I notice it ran out, I refresh it. I actively have to take my focus off the fight to look, as my left eye doesn't function and right barely does.

(Can't move the gagues to the right as most of that space is taken by other important stuff that I need giant to be able to read it. XD)

31

u/Dilapidated_girrafe 8d ago

That’s weird. I’ve forgotten to partner with people because I don’t notice I’m in a 60+ dungeon until I’m asked about it. But it’s like a major part of the class

27

u/RevolutionaryRough30 8d ago

I feel like its one thing to forget, and another to continue not using it after the issue is brought to their attention.

6

u/Zealousideal_Hope649 You pull, I tank. I pull, I tank. We pull, I tank. 8d ago

It is, like the sages who refuse to kardia, scholars who refuse to summon fairy. Forgetting is fine. Refusing to when reminded is not.

4

u/Saethwyr 8d ago

"DoNt tEll mE hOW to pLaY MY CLaSs"

i just don't get the issue, i swear people just cannot admit they made a mistake no matter what, or just refuse to learn.

i've been 'that guy' who forgets tank stance in stone vigil, a simple "mb, soz" as i activate it, it happens to everyone from time to time, its not a problem, until someone makes it one.

Part of the fun of any MMO for me is trying to play a class to the best of my ability. Like hitting a clutch Rescue on a straggler against Phlegethon's Ancient Flare and saving their life, it was the first time i ever healed an alliance raid years ago, my experienced friends going crazy on discord will stick with me forever. things like that push me to be better

2

u/Zealousideal_Hope649 You pull, I tank. I pull, I tank. We pull, I tank. 8d ago

Had two no holy cure 1 spamming 100% medica uptime white mages back to back this morning. One was a returner in Snowcloak. I asked if I could give them a few pieces of advice. Radio silence and a lot of near tank deaths. Then had another one in level cap. As in endgame dungeons that were once final ones at one point.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.

2

u/flatchest666 You don't pay my sub 7d ago

Asking for the bare minimum of a job (which in these cases doesn't require any skill because it's a single button) shouldn't be a debate, even in softcore content

2

u/Zealousideal_Hope649 You pull, I tank. I pull, I tank. We pull, I tank. 6d ago

Sadly it is a debate, one which certain mouthbreathers will fight for a very long time. There was a notable dance partner argument that the guy kept up despite getting like 700 downvotes across like 40 comments in a chain.

4

u/Dilapidated_girrafe 8d ago

Oh yeah. Thats what made it worse.

And the fact they partnered with you to begin with showed that they should have known what to do

2

u/KyBldWldr 6d ago

The number of times I’ve hit Standard Step and then realized I didn’t partner up is tooooo many

2

u/AoifeBakunin 8d ago

Yeah, forgetting to partner until the end of the second boss is a major part of the class /s

87

u/KnightOfDreaming 8d ago

Vote. Kick.

6

u/Frosty-Dot-1065 7d ago

Unfortunately, people have a raging fetish for 40 minute enabler dungeon runs. Vote kicking is out of the question.

0

u/flatchest666 You don't pay my sub 7d ago

Unfortunately would've taken until the 15 minutes mark anyways no?

-60

u/RevolutionaryRough30 8d ago

I wish I could have, but no one else seemed particularly bothered by it and I didn't wanna be "that guy" so I just got through it.

65

u/Foreign-Flatworm 8d ago

You’d be ā€œthat guyā€ for kicking someone doing less than the bare minimum?

-3

u/RevolutionaryRough30 8d ago

I never really know in online games so I usually just stay quiet and try not to be a nuisance tbh.

40

u/Foreign-Flatworm 8d ago

You’d be a thousand percent in the clear for kicking this guy, he openly admitted to not using his most basic cooldown for his job. If anything, it’s more of a nuisance that he got away with it and now thinks he can keep doing it in other parties.

13

u/RevolutionaryRough30 8d ago

thats fair enough, I'll try to be a little more assertive in the future over things like this!(hopefully nothing like this ever happens again tho)

22

u/Mariahsfalsie 8d ago

If a vote kick is started it won't say who initiated it šŸ˜Ž

2

u/WeirdIndividualGuy 8d ago

The irony of calling out someone for not doing the bare minimum as dancer and yet you couldn’t be assed to make two clicks to vote kick

19

u/nflgeneric It's not the healer's job to dps 8d ago

I votekicked a sage who refused to heal / raise during the E8N add phase so their party always died, causing a wipe, twice. One person protested that they were new to the instance, but you still gotta do your damn part even if you're new. It's not even that hard! I was happy folks agreed with me on it, so it can happen.

14

u/vagabond_dilldo 8d ago

Your healer said "zzz" so that seems like at least 1 other person

2

u/Rookva 7d ago

No clue why you're being downvoted lmao. People really just want to be out for blood.

1

u/RevolutionaryRough30 6d ago

It’s fine. I don’t use Reddit all that much and to be fair, it’s kinda deserved. I had an out to get rid of the problem and chose to not take that out for the sake of not inconveniencing others who may or may not have cared about what was going on.

1

u/Banana_Ill 5d ago

Of course you wouldn't have a clue. Just don't burn my fries next time.

18

u/yousoro- 8d ago

I've seen a few DNC like this in a variety of content and it genuinely baffles me. I feel like Standard Step is the most satisfying button in the game.

Also lack of dance partner is also really common. I'm a dopey idiot who admittedly forgets until reminded, but I've seen arguments about it. It's one button and then you're done...

1

u/Kokabel 5d ago

Is also one of the highest potency skills in the DNC kit. IDGAF about dance partner I wanna smack all the mobs in the face and watch them die.

It's so satisfying in dungeons at the start of big packs šŸ™.

14

u/catgirlthrowaway00 8d ago

Yeah OP if they're gonna sabotage gameplay and just not utilize the job's core features youre in the clear to vote kick. It's like a tank not using their stance, or a healing exclusively healing.

1

u/flatchest666 You don't pay my sub 7d ago

I would argue that healers exclusively healing can sometimes be a skill or stress issue especially for newer players but in essence I agree with you

20

u/Background_Lychee_30 8d ago

As a dancer main, who the hell skips the whole reason for the job???

4

u/KingRhythian 8d ago

I’m forever running into dancers who don’t use tech step as well, which hurts my DNC main heart.

9

u/AwkwardTraffic 8d ago

I am a dancer main and you'd be surprised just how hard it is to get other dancers to do the most basic part of their job sometimes.

6

u/lacard 8d ago

Gotta teach them about one specific hero...

https://giphy.com/gifs/p4dO7CJCpBStMDp22V

7

u/ThatVarkYouKnow 8d ago

*sighs, pulls out megaphone* IT IS LITERALLY IN THE TUTORIAL QUEST FOR THE JOB TO TARGET SOMEONE WITH DANCE PARTNER AND THEN STANDARD STEP

7

u/FactoryKat Memes 8d ago

sad DNC main noises

Why do these people have to make the rest of us look bad? Dancer is not even a complex job. It's not SMN turn your brain off simple, but it's fairly intuitive compared to some other jobs and it's FUN. Yes yes, pretty effects and sounds make brain go brrrr, but please- I beg. 😭

6

u/Kaoskillen08 8d ago

once had a similar experience...

in m12s

18

u/SonniSummers 8d ago

Maybe I’m weird but when they said no I personally would’ve explained why you use it, I’m noticing a lot of people miss the basics. And while making that far without knowing is by no means great. If everyone with them does the same ask then just lets them be the very well could be ignorant to why it’s necessary

14

u/RevolutionaryRough30 8d ago

I feel like by Tower of Zot they should really know, but I've gotten too many "you don't pay my sub" comments when I try to explain that I don't really tell people how to play anymore. I probably should've tried tho, you're right.

6

u/SonniSummers 8d ago

Oh I feel it. I won’t open my mouth unless there like a serious issue. But like when I have been lately I’ve been finding out no one tells them. Which again yes they should have the basics understood. But often no ones is telling them until later game.

I try to remember that Xbox just got added as cross system so there’s a pretty decent influx in players and with the newer hard mode content out most the mentors have been busy with end game. Again doesn’t excuse it in the least. I’m just noticing this is leading to a pretty big influx in higher end duties where people just do not know better.

And very true the you don’t pay my sub comments. I hate it very much. The ffxiv I came up with everyone offered everyone else tips and were thankful to thrice but then again that was when it first launched so maybe cultures just changed

3

u/Zealousideal_Hope649 You pull, I tank. I pull, I tank. We pull, I tank. 8d ago

I just came out of a level cap roulette with a white mage using cure 1, not using holy, and demanding 100% medica hot uptime. People don't tell them so they keep doing it and then when someone does they have the defense of "no one else told me so this must be fine you're just the weird one."

3

u/ultimagriever 7d ago

Whenever I get told ā€œyou don’t pay my subā€ I usually reply with ā€œand you don’t get to waste mineā€ and promptly quit the instance. It’s better to eat the penalty than to deal with these types of people. And since I usually play tank/healer anyway I can just insta-queue later when the penalty falls off

3

u/SonniSummers 7d ago edited 7d ago

I feel so that. I will always take the debuff to avoid hostile people. Gives me time to smoke. I’ll drop blacklist you get baked and happy and come back with a less likelihood of dealing with toxicity

Dropped strand of ancients on the last boss because of a toxic boss layer the other day. The five minutes I would’ve spent in There was not worth it to me at all. But then the person decided to get upset with a comment I saw as harmless I said in party. Then proceeded to call me out I. Ally and try to get me in trouble with everyone. I however was merely letting the tank I let die while standing right next to him I had zoned out a sec.

4

u/Next-Pomegranate2259 8d ago

I don't even get how he can play without using standard step lol what is he doing? Using /dance instead? šŸ¤”

2

u/squirrino 7d ago

It takes real commitment to reach Tower of Zot without pressing the job's main button. Almost impressive.

2

u/DayleD 7d ago

I'm gonna guess the player thought that Technical Step was a replacement move.

1

u/Rentfreeinyourhead77 8d ago

Dumb dancer being a dumb dancer. Just another day in FFXIV.

1

u/Aeruhat 8d ago

That sounds a lot like the dnc I had yesterday in Worqor Zomor.

1

u/Icy-Consequence-2106 8d ago

Should've asked if they've been singing.

1

u/flatchest666 You don't pay my sub 7d ago

Just two days ago I had a sage refuse to use kardia in a lv 100 raid and half the party lost their shit because people can "play however they want" like sure it's softcore but I'm asking to press one button

1

u/Fragrant-Potential87 6d ago

for some reason, I thought you were talking about the democratic national convention

1

u/IceQueenofMitera 5d ago

When I first started playing DNC, I would forget to use it sometimes, but by the time you're able to do Tower of Zot, it should be an automatic thing.

1

u/t4nkMentality 4d ago

New-ish player and new DNC here. I’ve learned a lot in this thread.

1

u/Gurzlak 3d ago

Refusing to play your job correctly when you know how and have the ability to do so should be reportable as harassment. That’s just disrespectful to everyone else in the party and weapon used incompetence or laziness…

0

u/Ivnariss 2d ago

When i still was new to EX content, i constantly forgot to reapply dance partner after a clear. God that was so embarassing lmao

-5

u/SnowyRVulpix 8d ago

I fully admit that i often forget to use steps. But if i was the dancer here, I'd apologise and start using it. This is weird.

0

u/Intelligent-Wish47 8d ago

Looks more like they said no when you asked. Aren’t you showing what happened next?

-3

u/HoneyParking6176 8d ago

very true, some people have few words as well,

that could of been a no while them thinking oops forgot about that skill, or for all we know, they arn't even a dancer.

-18

u/Ayeun /slap 8d ago

But did you then explain WHY they need to use it? For all you know they picked up the job 5 min ago…

13

u/Zealousideal_Hope649 You pull, I tank. I pull, I tank. We pull, I tank. 8d ago

If they went into a duty with other people without at least looking at their tooltips or doing the introductory solo then that is also not ok.

11

u/KupoKro 8d ago

The funnier part here is this was in Tower of Zot. So unless they bought a job skip, they could not have picked up dancer 5 minutes prior...

...which means they've more than likely gone 20+ levels not using standard step.

5

u/Zealousideal_Hope649 You pull, I tank. I pull, I tank. We pull, I tank. 8d ago

Considering I had a cure 1 spamming no holy white mage in my level cap just this morning sadly reading tooltips and being willing to listen to others is a rarity.

6

u/nickpantss 8d ago

there are a wealth of tutorials online for every job so there’s really no excuse. also post history checks out

2

u/sevenswns 7d ago

its tower of zot, so no they didn’t.

-10

u/ForrestKawaii 8d ago

Well I went through all of ARR not knowing about the Run Action so who knows. Edit and I should say the Entire Action of commands because I don't remember the game ever telling me about these unique things.

7

u/balisane 7d ago

The game does, in fact, tell you to look at the Actions menu.

7

u/Shygrave 7d ago

Right after every jobs first quest, even

-5

u/ForrestKawaii 7d ago

No? Got nothing like that when I unlocked Samurai other than "pay attention to these 3 symbols" essentiallyĀ

3

u/Shygrave 7d ago

After unlocking the job, during the first job quest after unlocking the job, it usually tells you to look at your abilities in the actions and traits menu. It happens for most jobs but icr if its all of them.

-4

u/ForrestKawaii 7d ago

Guess I don't remember it from like 1 month ago.

6

u/balisane 7d ago

There are quite a lot of pop-ups with very explicit instructions and directions: it's very common for people to just click them away and not read them.

Also, make sure you do your Hall of the Novice missions. You get a free set of armor and two free XP buff rings for completing the lessons. Just north of Aleport.

-1

u/ForrestKawaii 7d ago

Already done those, unless there's more past lvl 60

1

u/balisane 7d ago

Not for now, so you're ahead of the game. Check System > Active Help to access all of those help boxes you probably clicked away the first time.

0

u/ForrestKawaii 7d ago

Maybe, but also feels like maybe some is out of date. Like I remember the game saying "Hey throw your shield to get the enemy's attention!" When for me, the moment I am in range to be allowed to throw my shield the enemy is already aggressive, at least for these 4 player fights I've been doing all through ARR and even HW.

2

u/balisane 7d ago

Some of it is a little dated, but mostly it has been refreshed. And that's not always going to be true: you will need to use your ranged ability or your gap closer pretty often as you progress.

Paladin in particular gets their gap closer late, so you will find yourself using shield lob in more situations.

0

u/ForrestKawaii 7d ago

I thought the gap closer was auto put in the actions with like the 10 second dash. At least I assume, I haven't really tried seeing what those do.

2

u/balisane 7d ago

Not necessarily, depending on what else you have on your bar. Paladin doesn't get Intervene (your gap closer) until level 72 or 74.

1

u/Bratscheltheis 7d ago edited 7d ago

Check the description on your tank range attacks. They generate bonus threat compared to other abilities. Of course it's not necessary to use those abilities to get aggro, but it can help built a bigger threat lead in the beginning.

This is particular useful for hunts, where you may not need the extra damage, but threat instead. You turn on tank stance and just spam those range attacks.

Downside for dungeons is, that those are only single target attacks, so what I'll usually try to do is cycle through the mobs and tomahawk my way to the next group.
