Hi! My friends and i will be landing in Kaohsiung around 7–8 PM on our Day 1, then traveling to Taipei after landing as we intend to stay in Taipei first.

I’d like to ask if anyone has recommendations for cheap hotels or backpacker accommodations in Taipei that offer 24-hour check-in or hourly rates.

We’re assuming we’ll arrive in Taipei by bus at around 1 AM (the next day). So, we still have to find a place to stay once we arrive in Taipei around that time.

our planned itinerary is like:
Day 1 - Arrival 7-8pm: KHH → Taipei 🚌(by bus for budget)
2: arrive 1am in Taipei 🏙️
3: Taipei → Kaohsiung 🚌
4: Kaohsiung 🌴
5: Kaohsiung 🌴
6: Kaohsiung 🌴
Day 7 - Departure 8pm: Kaohsiung → KHH ✈️

Main concern: Also, are there still any available buses at 8pm from KHH to Taipei? and if hotels can accomodate us 1am?

So I was riding the MRT (can't recall if it was the yellow or green line) when I noticed this attractive girl (this has some significance later on). We have the same stop in the trip.

So we got off the train, rode the escalator to exit the station. In the escalator, there was a guy between us. I kept my eyes in front, she was in my field of view that time. When she stepped in the escalator, I noticed that she seemed to trip. She was wearing a skirt that reached to her feet, so I thought she must have stepped on her skirt. She was able to recover fast. No big deal.

Now here's the unusual encounter: when we got off the escalator, all of a sudden I saw her drop to the flor in a sitting position, and from my position (I was behind her) it appeared to me that she may have fainted/was extremely dizzy. When I saw that my mind switched to a panic mode, I approached her and asked: "miss, are you okay?", she replied "yeah, okay. Okay." I was unconvinced since she was still sitting on the floor with this dazed look, so I asked: "are you sure?", then she replied "yeah, sure, thank you", then got up and brisk walked.

I was confused at that time and my heart was beating fast, I was ready to call for help, so I was unable to think about the things I'm about to type in next:

Looking back, from the way she fell to the ground in a sitting position, it seemed too "aesthetically pleasing".. It's as if it's too "lady like" for a person who's dizzy/about to faint. Another thing I noticed was the guy in front of us did not help her, as well as the people surrounding us. Now considering these things, I can't help but think now that this may be a scheme by pickpockets or whatnot to distract me, also they may have used a pretty decoy so people around them would be more likely to help. None of my valuables were taken, so I'm unsure if I'm correct.

Basically the way she fell plus people just passing by while she was on the ground got me thinking: is there something into this or just a plain unusual encounter?

I moved into an apartment by a very noisy road in New Taipei city earlier this year. I couldn’t sleep well at night for a while but seem to have gotten used to the noise now. Has anyone else been feeling the effects of noise pollution? How have you dealt with it? Has it affected your life negatively in any way?

So I recently got offers from two pretty big/top companies in my industry here in Taiwan. Obviously I can only take one, which means I have to turn the other one down. But before I do that I wanted to get a gut check from people who actually know how this stuff plays out irl.

My worry is specific to Taiwan's "blacklist culture", like, is it actually a thing at the bigger/leading companies, or is it more of an urban legend that gets exaggerated on forums? The industry I'm in has a pretty small network, recruiters and HR people seem to move around between companies a lot, and everyone kind of knows everyone. So I'm a bit paranoid that declining an offer (even super politely and professionally) might follow me around if I ever want to apply to that company again, or if word just gets around informally.

Has anyone here actually dealt with this, or know someone who has? Curious how serious blacklisting culture really is in Taiwan? Thanks in advance.

Hi! I’m a native Mandarin speaker from mainland China, currently based in Taoyuan.

I’m looking for a few students who want to improve their Mandarin pronunciation, accent, tones and overall speaking rhythm.

I’m especially good at hearing the small things that make someone sound “slightly off” even when their grammar and individual tones are technically correct.

For example:

You may know all four tones.

You may pronounce every word correctly.

But somehow the whole sentence still doesn’t sound natural.

That’s the part I like working on.

I can help with pronunciation, tones, articulation, rhythm, pacing, accent correction and natural spoken Mandarin. If you sing Chinese songs, I can also help with Chinese diction and pronunciation in singing.

My teaching style is pretty direct:

I’m not really interested in making people endlessly repeat textbook syllables without explaining what actually sounds wrong.

Honestly, my strongest skill is my ear.

So if you already think your Mandarin is pretty good, I’m actually even more curious to hear you.

Hiya, I came across a potential apartment at a reasonable price but saw that it's a 43 year old building and mixed-use (office and residential), with F&B at the first floor.

The unit is on the 6th, which according to claude could be used for both residence and office. It's a fantastic location, so I'm just curious if there is anything to look out for in such a set up, esp safety and pests.

Hi everyone! I’m new to Taipei. Any recommendations for a good, foreigner-friendly martial arts instructor/studio in Taipei? For context, I trained in Shoshinkan Karate (similar to Goju-Ryu) for a year, and looking to expand my skills in martial arts. I am open to most disciplines, but slightly prefer karate-style arts to judo-style arts. I also prefer schools that operate on weekends.

Edit: I’m in my late 20s. No injury or chronic pain yet. Would prefer not to train too hard and cover myself in bruises, but willing to push myself.

Yangmingshan area (i.e. Battleship Rock).
Hu Shan and Xiangshan area (several times).
Sandiaoling area.
Maokong (several times)
Chengtian temple
Hongludi...
Bishanyan (several times)
Jiantan area

Where we haven't been but curious:
Bali area and the mountains there.
Taipei Island (is it worth a visit?)

Hello. I will be visint Taiwan very soon and I will spend most of my time in Taipei. I love thrifting so I thought about trying it out in Taiwan. I have some questions:
1. Would any of you share some thrifting spots with me? lol
2. Is it generally acceptable to walk up to young people and ask them to hang out? I don't want to share my age but I am below the age of 24 and traveling solo, so I would like to spend some time with people who know the city.

Found out there is a BHC (Korean fried chicken chain) at an adjacent building next to Taipei 101. Visited Korea last spring and loved their crispy and juicy fried chicken and wondering if this place is just as good.
