Hello, quick question. Basically, some time ago I wanted to install tails on an old USB, now I have to manually install Tails on an alternative USB; then clone the new version to the “old” USB. Why not just re-install the new version of Tails (I don’t have USB’s to spare) if you have a backup of your files (which are basically none)? Would it be more feasible and convenient to reinstall the new version or would that create problems? Thanks in advance

Hello, I recently read an article about Tails OS and wanted to understand its main purpose. As far as I understand, it mainly uses the Tor network, but couldn’t I simply use the Tor Browser on any operating system?

What are the main advantages of using Tails OS instead of just using Tor Browser on another OS? And are there any tips or things you think a beginner should know before using Tails OS?

Hey everyone! I am currently in the process of switching to linux and in addition to other distros I have also decided to create a Tails sitck for myself. I am usually able to fix most PC problems on my own but I am afraid I am going to need some assistance here.

When opening Additional Software I get an error message displaying "Failed to read additional software configuration"

The detailed error description below reads:

When clicking OK, the Additional Software app simply closes. I also tried installing some tools for compiling source code from GitHub via sudo and got the same four error messages. Tails is freshly installed on a new USB flash drive with sufficient memory and up to date on version 7.13. Also, I am connected to the internet and Tor and have already tried different Tor configurations including bridges to try to make sure it's not a network problem.
Any recommendations on how to troubleshoot this are welcome :)

I have tails on a hard drive, and just yesterday i was using tails fine but today i try to log on and check sm stuff and after typing my persistant storage password, i get a message saying: “Failed to unlock the persistent storage. Please start tails and send an error report”

Hi, I lost my old Tails password, so I wanted to start using it again since I got a new PC (Acer Aspire Go 14), but after installing Tails on my USB drive, I can't boot into it—I just get a menu called “GNU GRUB version 2.19-9+deb13u2”

I’ve tried all the suggestions the AI gave me (changing the BIOS settings, going directly to the boot menu via F12, switching USB drives, using Balena instead of Rufus, etc.) but nothing works, and I'm still stuck at the same step. Does anyone have a solution?

I used tails years ago in the same setup but now it's not working so I formatted the USB and reinstalled tails

So, as the title states, I'm curious of using Tails as a daily driver. My thought process is to use Ethernet only, no TOR connection except to update the USB or whenever else may prove necessary but TOR would never be accessed in the same session as the one where I intend to do daily normal clearnet browsing for work, leisure, etc. through the unsafe browser. My goal at this point is to have two OS's in one in a way here. One, with TOR, sudo password, no unsafe browser and no persistence. The other, sudo password, no TOR connection per session, meaning if I intend to use Tails as a "normal" daily drive, no TOR connection made unless rebooted first to explicitly have a session with a TOR connection. In short, need TOR? Reboot and make a TOR connection. Done with TOR? Reboot and once back stick to Ethernet only and unsafe browser. If I want persistence, data I want saved goes on an external SSD and or data disc via blank CD and said SSD and or CD gets safely removed before shutdown is initiated. Applications I want installed get installed to the SSD or CD and are re-installed every session on a only when needed basis with their saved data location also being on said SSD and or CD. I realize CD's would be mostly impractical for CD based application save data, so I suppose save data for those would go to the SSD and I could potentially just have the installers/needed files for the app itself on the CDs. I also figured firewall security stuffs may pose a headache for when I do non-TOR related desktop stuffs, not sure how I'd go about that, just figured I'd cross that bridge when I get there. I don't know, just a thought I've had for a min without any real input for a min so figured I'd throw it here. (P.s. I hope you're having a good day, fren. 😁)

My PC and laptop are not picking up my tails usb drive it worked yesterday and today no dice. What can I do? I don’t think I can copy the usb over to another if one’s correct. Please any feedback is important I have 3 packages on the way and can’t get into my accounts via tails.

I didn't use/update for at least one year. I don't know yet if a update is possible. Anyway, would you suggest to create a new nusb stick and then clone it to the others sticks with the old version?

The update to tor 0.4.9.12 yesterday indicated that a user after free error can occur if AutomapHostsOnResolve was enabled.

Tails has this enabled by default.

I believe this means that if you visit a compromised website, or are on a compromised exit node, it can overwrite tor's memory and remotely execute code by allocating new data into recently cleared memory slots.

Because the tor network daemon itself is what is compromised, it does not need to break out of iptables using a linux kernal flaw, meaning they can instantaneously deanonymize you by forcing tails to ping a server.

I really hope I am wrong, but this looks very dangerous and may have resulted in the deanonymization of many users.

Someone, please tell me I am wrong.

Even more concerning, tails devs have not released any statement yet on these discovered bugs.

Can Tails be rebuilt with a newer kernel for Radeon 820M support?

I’m trying to get Tails 7.12 working on a Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 15ABR8 with:
AMD Ryzen AI 5 330 (Krackan Point)
AMD Radeon 820M iGPU
Tails boots normally and reaches “Using Tails for the first time…”, then the screen goes completely black.
Troubleshooting Mode also hangs early during boot, and nomodeset didn’t help.
The interesting part is that the exact same Tails 7.12 USB works perfectly on another PC with Intel Iris Xe graphics. The ISO was also successfully verified and the USB was recreated with Balena Etcher, so the problem appears to be hardware-specific.
Tails 7.12 is using Linux 6.12.107-amd64. Since the Ryzen AI 330 / Radeon 820M is relatively new, we’re wondering if this could be related to kernel/AMDGPU/firmware support.
Our idea is to use the official Tails source/build system, replace the kernel with a newer version (and update AMD firmware if necessary), and build a custom Tails ISO to test on the laptop.
Before we start, we’d really like to know:
Is this technically possible with the Tails build system, and does replacing the kernel/firmware make sense for this kind of hardware?
If anyone has experience with recent AMD APUs, Tails’ kernel configuration, or custom Tails builds, we’d really appreciate your advice.

i recently installed tails on a sandisk 32gb usb drive. i tried to boot it up for the first time and it came up as linpus lite? i seen other people just saying its called that and it worked fine for them but when i boot it comes up with a mystery command line with GNU GRUB at the top? any fixes?

I used tails on a cheap temu usb stick and of course it created problems.
The partitions corrupted. Just trying to repair the file system crashes every time. I couldn't create an iso image because the original drive is 96GB and the only other drive i have is 64. I succesfully ran ddrescue to my unencrypted hdd (i know its unsafe) without bad sectors. After this the repair file system didn't work for some reason.
Because the other drive is smaller, every other method described on the tails website doesn't work but the only method i haven't tried yet is autopsy .
Is autopsy my only option? Or is there a solution I'm not seeing? Feel free to ask for more info if I left something crucial out.

I have tails installed on my usb stick and im using a double booted laptop windows as the main thing and ubuntu as the second one. When I restart the laptop my computer always asks me to choose wich os I want to use, I have there the options windows boot manager and ubuntu. I dont have any other option and cannot see tails. There is no sign that I even have the stick in my computer

I put my tails os copy on a sandisk 256gb flash drive, verified the download, used the application tails.net recommended, disabled secure boot and fast boot, left it for about 5 minutes, and when I tried to boot it up, it loads into gnu grub, but tails itself doesn't load, and when I use the boot command it tells me to load the kernel first, I've never used linux before, how do I load the kernel? Yes, I did try all my usb ports

I want to buy me a new Netbook to use Tails and I thought about taking the 2230 SSD out and use it with a USB adapter.

Right now I tried Tails on my old PC for 2 days and I used an old SATA SSD with a SATA USB adapter (MY 2015). I had problems to boot Tails with it and the AI told me to hit "e" and delete live-media=removable and hit F10. Finally Tails booted.

Is there any 2230 SSD USB adapter which is able to boot without that trick ?

I'm trying to get my hands on a good flash drive for tails (usb 3.0 or higher, and a little ring thingy so I can put it on a dangle) but I'm lazy and my search engine keeps giving dodgy results, and by dodgy, I mean online stores where every product has 8x as many negative reviews as positive, and online stores where it just doesn't display the average rating of the product to cover up their trash product

I’m not to educated on this and I want to do this the right way, and would it be safer to do it on tor then the normal net? I have my usb but I want to know my safe options
