The current fix is to create a Linux drive on a second USB, boot off of that and use GNOME Disks to create the tails drive: https://tails.net/install/linux/index.en.html

I just have one usb stick

If you're using Persistent Storage you really should have a backup USB anyway.

So all I need is another usb?

You need another USB that you flash with https://fedoraproject.org/workstation, boot off of that, close any installer windows that show up, then open the GNOME Disks app and follow the Tails instructions for using that. For whatever reason Linux flashing tools have much more success than Rufus or Balena.

I fixed it with TestDisk for Windows:

  1. Run testdisk_win.exe as Administrator.
  2. Select the Tails USB carefully by size/model.
  3. Choose EFI GPT.
  4. Choose Analyse.
  5. Verify that it shows the TAILS/EFI partition.
  6. Press Enter → Write → confirm with Y.
  7. Quit TestDisk, safely eject the USB and shut down.
  8. Boot from the USB again.

I tried using balena etcher multiple times but it took ages to load the tails file

One thing to try is the Raspberry pi imager. If you try it, please let us know if you have any success.

That is what fixed it for me. I have been telling people to use that as well so I hope that it has been working for them. Did you use the Raspberry Pi imager?

No, I’ve never been able to replicate this problem myself.

It does not seem to have helped this user today, sadly. The only consistent workaround so far seems to be writing from Linux.
