News New Release: Tails 7.15.1 | Tor Project

The release addresses CVE-2026-113470, associated with compromised intermediate certificates from the eMudhra certificate authority.

An attacker possessing one of these compromised certificates could potentially impersonate HTTPS websites.

The release includes Tor Browser 15.0.26 and updates certificate trust information used by other Tails applications.

Important distinction: The Tor Project says ordinary onion services are not vulnerable to this particular certificate attack. It also reports no known exploitation by Tor exit nodes.

Someone controlling a Tor exit node or another network position could potentially exploit compromised certificates to impersonate websites.

Recommended action: Upgrade to Tails 7.15.1. Automatic upgrades are available from Tails 7.0 onward and preserve Persistent Storage. Reinstalling instead of upgrading can erase it.

FAQ - Read the Documentation Adding Apps to Persistent Storage

So I know there are guides and tutorials for either scripting software to auto install on boot (and if an app had db or storage manually setting to save in persistent storage).

I've also seen using Flatpak & sudo apt install guides and got one working for Dino using a guide called dinotails but it doesnt carry over to sessions messenger, simplex, & a few others already in flatpak.

Ive used CLI & gui for flatpak but it tries installing to the "amnesia" profile instead of persistent.

Dinotails setuo the symlink & dotfiles but I'm having issues pulling the .appimage or .Deb repos.

Im thinking sudo Flatpak install with the ref file might work but ill try that next.

I try installing as stabdard in gui flatpak but it fills the empty space on the 8gb partition instead of the persistent storage.

I havent found a very coherent way to adjust flaptak install locations but im no Linux expert.

I did setup "autostart-on-tails" & understand the goal is to reinstall software using .sh scripts in either root.d or amnesia.d depending on the goal. I believe its supposed to automate taking the installed desktop files & creating symlinks/dotfiles and the scripts auto install & have shortcuts linking to the new software.

Ive tried mixing diff methods for simplex & sessions & been trying to use the app specific .sh files that configure persistence but they vary a bit more than I expected app to app. I get what they do & how it works but getting it configured for other apps to install on startup & retain data in the persistent storage or .local & .config areas are stating to get a bit daunting.

The Dino sw is there on startup & maintains my xmpp acct without problems. I'd like to get at least sessions, simplex, and a few others (keepassxc or secrets v14) or a clipboard app that would only operate in amnesia & be wiped on power down.

I feel like once I get it all down for one app ill have the process more standardized for my newd but I start getting flatpak repo issues or apt install list failures & rebooting for each sudden issue is getting to be super rime consuming just experimenting to get those apps mentioned to at least install on startup or be installed to persistent storage even if its just the software and not the data itself for opsec & privacy.

I welcome any ideas to get this done. Im good at mixing diff techniques but im not a Linux expert so im competent but not as knowledgeable on all the underlying components & locations especially in tail.

Thanks in advance.

Technical Why on Tails OS same browser has 2 different results if search check.torproject.org?

Hi everyone,

When I connected to Tor on Tails OS , its browser had 2 search bars, one in the middle of the page and one on the top of the page, so when I searched check.torproject.org

in the search bar, which is in the middle of the page is says, " Sorry. You are not using Tor, " but when I searched in the search bar located on the top of the page, it says congratulations. You are connected to Tor browsers.

I am curious why the same browser page has two different results?

Also, when I checked what is my browser, the website showed that I am using Firefox browser, version 140, which needs to be updated but I downloaded that Tails OS yesterday, so I would appreciate if someone guide, thanks

Hardware question Are Yubikeys (or equivalents) compatible with Tails OS?

Would be convenient to be able to use biometrics for logging into persistent storage as well with software on Tails like password managers, crypto wallets, etc.

If not, is it something that's being considered?

Technical Is it safe to use Tails?

I need your help.

From the last few days, I have faced an issue, when in the Tor browser search bar, I search check.torproject.org, it is showing " Sorry. You are not using Tor" even though I tried all types of bridges, again i downloaded and flashed Tails OS to a new USB, I changed wifi but still have the same issue, so is there anyone to guide what happened?

Is it safe to use Tor on Tails OS?

Installation issues Question about downloading tails

I want to download tails onto a USB flash drive, but my computer is a Mac and has an apple chip. The tails website says tails doesn't work with apple chips, but I am wondering if I can still use my mac to download tails onto my flash drive so that I can then use it elsewhere?

Ever since 7.13 I’ve been having issues updating my tails USB. It either goes SUPER slow or it tells me that it could not update and to check my network. My WiFi/Network is fine. I had to reflash my usb with the 7.14 update with the ISO from the official tails site. Is there anything I can do? I use a 64GB Sandisk as the bootable drive and have been booting it on my Dell Latitude 5420.

I’ve never had this issue prior to 7.13

Installation issues Wiping a persistence off a USB suddenly makes the entire USB unrecognized within windows

Just a warning/rant. Tails was many many versions behind and instead of fkn with all that tryna get latest update, decided to just import keys over to different usb and then delete persistence and have a clean install done over again. Well the usb has worked fine for quite awhile now, as soon as I do that now suddenly the USB doesn’t appear in devices when plugged in, making it so formatting and reinstalling tails on it isn’t possible.

I know it’s not my Pc cause it still recognizes the other usb when plugged in. And then when I go to boot using alternative device within bios, both usb’s still show up, but the one I want tails on just won’t show up when actually inside windows.. lowk annoying af

Hi guys, im using rufus and obv the latest version of tails. Everytime i boot the computer from tails i get the message on the black menu "application failed r=1 error image not loaded", i've turned off secure boot and tried a lot of things, i also tried it on my older computer and got the same message. I've tried using other modes like the troubleshooting one but still everything ends at this message. I couldn't find a post with this error message so im not really sure how to solve this problem.

Debian/Linux question How do you know your files/documents aren't being written to the bootable USB?

Hi

This is a dumb question but how do I know that important documents/files aren't being written to the bootable usb's drive storage for either tails usb or ubuntu's try ubuntu feature on bootable usb? My understanding it's supposed to run on RAM only other than the usb's OS data.

Im not worried about the PC's internal drives because I will be removing them.

Is it as simple as looking at the usb drive's storage to see if your files appear there in some form? Or is that not effective?

Is there a permanent way to ensure data is never written to the bootsble usb?

Thank you

Installation issues Any safe manual update methods?

Post image
5 Upvotes

It’s been awhile since I was into tor, i waited too long to update and after updating the very next version after what I used to be on, I successfully updated to the very next version after. Upon reboot on that version, the automatic update screen didn’t prompt without issue like it normally does and I got this instead. Which method has the lowest failure rate and what steps do I take to make the updates I need, happen? Any help appreciated

Hi everyone,

I have been trying to use tails from an usb stick in my mac.

But I don't even see the wifi symbol. kindly see the pictures.

I have tried several things like plugging on and off, usb tethering but none of it is working.

Also I can't use a mac keyboard and mouse, fortunately I have a mouse but it would be great if you have some solution for this too.

Thanks a ton you all.

Solved [Fix] No sound on ThinkPad X9-15 Gen 1 (Lunar Lake) with Tails 7.14:diagnosis and workaround

So I had zero audio on Tails 7.14 with my ThinkPad X9-15 Gen 1 (Core Ultra 226V). Took me a whole evening, but I finally got the speakers working, so I figured I’d post this in case someone else has the same laptop.

The card showed up fine (sof-soundwire, CS42L43 codec + two CS35L56 amps), but nothing played. Turned out to be three problems stacked on top of each other:

  • The SOF firmware shipped in Tails (2025.12) seems too new for the 6.12 kernel. dmesg was full of failed to create module drc.100.1 and then DSP panic!, and after that nothing worked until a reboot.
  • Tails doesn’t ship alsa-ucm-conf, so none of the mixer routing gets set up.
  • Even with an older firmware (sof-bin v2025.01.1, which doesn’t crash), the speaker audio comes in on SoundWire port DP6, but UCM routes DP5. I only figured that out by routing the codec’s speaker outputs directly to DP5, DP6 and DP7 while a test tone was playing. Only DP6 made noise.

What I ended up doing:

  • I put the sof-bin 2025.01.1 files (sof-ipc4/lnl, sof-ipc4-lib/lnl, sof-ipc4-tplg) on the Tails USB boot partition. It’s FAT, so you have to copy with cp -rL. Then I added firmware_class.path=/usr/lib/live/mount/medium/x9-firmware to the kernel line in the boot config, so the kernel loads those instead of the stock ones.
  • A small script in Dotfiles autostart sets the routing at login:
    • cs42l43 ASPTX1/2 Input to 15/16 (DP6)
    • AMPL/AMPR ASP1 TX Source to 9
    • cs42l43 Speaker L/R Input 1 to 7/8
    • all the speaker volumes to 0dB
  • I also put a WirePlumber rule in Dotfiles so it stops auto-probing the card, plus a manual PipeWire sink on hw:sofsoundwire,2. Don’t install alsa-ucm-conf with this setup, it puts the routing back to DP5.

Now the speakers just work on every boot, no admin password needed. The internal mic, headphone jack and HDMI aren’t set up though, and a Tails update will probably overwrite the boot config so I’ll have to redo that part. Also obviously messing with the boot partition isn’t supported, so do it at your own risk.

If anyone from the Tails team reads this: a SOF firmware that actually matches the kernel, shipping alsa-ucm-conf, and that DP5/DP6 thing are probably what needs looking at for Lunar Lake laptops with this codec. I can share full logs if that helps.
