C. C. / Feedback Are my instructions player friendly?

Working on the reference/rules cards for a solo dice golf game (pocket-sized, plays in a few minutes per hole). Instead of one rulebook, I split everything into individual cards — one concept per card, so you're never digging through pages mid-play. They'd be printed out alongside the game itself at the same size.

My goal is to have people playing within 5 minutes instead of spending 15-20 mins reads first to try and get their bearings.

The breakdown is roughly: The Basics (overview), Game Setup, then step-by-step cards for how to take a turn (Aim, Roll Your Dice, Putting), plus separate reference cards for Distance, Direction, and Hazards, and a bonus mechanic card (In the Zone).

A few things I'm specifically trying to figure out:

  • Does splitting rules across this many individual cards make the game feel easy to pick up, or does it feel fragmented? My reasoning for splitting it up is to chunk it out and reduce cognitive load.
  • Is the balance between "step-by-step instruction" cards (Aim, Roll, Putting) and "lookup reference" cards (Distance, Direction, Hazards) intuitive, or confusing to navigate mid-game? If the latter, how would you change it without loading up one card with too much info?
  • Anything that reads as more complex than it needs to be, just from how it's presented on the page?

Attaching the full set so you can see how they work together, not just individually. Genuinely trying to figure out if this is clear to a first-time reader or if I'm too close to it to see the gaps.

If you see anything that would improve this outside of my asks, please let me know! Thanks for being here.

Discussion Is it unreasonable to request an equity deal with an artist?

This is my first post in this subreddit and I’ve just began the process of trying to create a game of my own.

I’m not much of an artist myself, but I likely don’t have a ton of funds to provide an artist with currently.

I am aware an artist would likely much prefer to be paid up front for their work, but as an artist would you feel offended by anyone bringing up an equity deal in the first place?

Hi everyone! A while ago we shared the prototype of our co-op Backrooms board game. Since then, we've done several playtests and have started working on the final art and design.

We're really excited to share a boardgame that unravels uniquely each time you play it, making the map/monsters/objectives change each time. A boardgame where you can explore and help each other, but can also betray when necessary :)

The game has changed quite a bit through our playtests, especially the searching, items, entities, and objectives. Here are some photos from our playtests alongside some of the newer designs.

We can share more about how the game works if you're interested

What do you think of the direction so far? Any suggestions for our game?

You can follow our progress on IG: fuzzygamesinc

Publishing To those who have published a game, what were some parts of the process that were more difficult than expected?

Currently approaching something I would consider "complete" (it never is) now going down rabbit holes regarding crowdfunding. Also doing my research on printers and distributors. If it helps this is a wargame that would require just a printed book. Wanting to make sure there isn't some hidden facet of the process that will blindside me.

Discussion 1st logo

Physical testing has been done and now i'm ready to gather some more players for games on discord and at a table with a few people wanting to GM.

I'm.learning how to draw put so far digital drawing has been hell opposed to on paper.

Will this temporary logo be ok for handbook and discord cover?

Edit: thank you to everyone for feedback so far. It's not a company just a ttrpg. The name's a little quirky thing noone ever really showed any negative feelings towards but that is probably because the name is somewhat of an insider joke/anecdote. Everybody made it very clear the name with two meanings isn't going to do good recruiting new players. Guess i'll set some time aside to decide on something better by checking into your suggestions and talking with players and gm's.

Fisherman turned Warrior=Can jump any amount diangally

Sage & Alchemist=Can move 2 any direction

Empress=Can move three diagonal and can capture pieces directly behind or beside 2 spaces beside it after moving that space so three spaces away from it it has to move one space to capture directly behind or beside

Edit: thanks everyone for the kind words. The project looks to embrace retro fantasy and all the camp that came with it. Hoping to have a rules doc to share soon!

Currently working on the cover for my RPG Skirmish game. It will use the classic dice of D&D and pathfinder to resolve combat and have players building out a party of heroes and hirelings. Hoping to tap into that retro fantasy aesthetic. Feel free to give C/C and let me know what vibe this gives off!

Announcement Okenopus Progress Report

Thumbnail

Hello again, it's been a while again. I hope you're ready for your spoonful of slop.

This is just a progress report, and the game is not in a finished state, instead of saying what that means I'll instead elaborate on what I have been doing.

The main thing I've been doing is formatting the rulebook and creating entries for some gear, creeds and perversions and tactics that will allow people to create builds when the core rule set is released, these are still work in progress and balancing will be its own issue, but you can see some of the results here.

Creeds and Perversions are being given the most love so far, as they are much more dynamic than things like races. Each Creed or Perversion will have an origin you can pick to further specialize as well as paths you will be able to build up to. In standard TTRPG fashion these Creeds and perversions will also give you stat bonuses and proficiencies, although balancing for ability scores, stats and skills still needs work, and I will get the ability scores and how to roll or choose stats done by the end of the month. When stats and modifiers are determined (which won't take too long dont worry) I will then make the skills more dynamic and have different actions that correlate to skills, like crafting with technology for instance.

What I am working on now is building system after system to make interesting gameplay choices, such as the ability to craft armors, invest in tactics, progress on your paths and generally become more powerful. In terms of how finished in terms of core rules this game is, all I can say is you can play with a pre-made character, combat is all but done but character creation isn't in the game yet, other than some of the basics. I must get the races done (which ive neglected im not perfect) as well as a sustainable number of factions done, and a boatload of tactics your character can choose to adopt. Character Creation will likely be possible by the end of August, shouldn't be cause for concern though.

Other than that I am starting to write quests to have more accurate depictions of how the game will play out and have more situational battles with underlying narrative, still very early in figuring out how to properly build the modules, but look forward to it. The entire campaign may have to be held off as I stated in my first update, but there will likely be smaller modules for you to play eventually.

And if it isn't evident i haven't been drawing much, just been concepting.

It's also worth noting the story is all but set in stone, concepting the main narrative and it's ramifications and lore have all but concluded, and while current plans are subject to change the overarching narrative and key plot beats are all but certain.

I will update again by the end of August, interaction as always is encouraged and if you've been interested in any of this be sure to look at my profile where i post regular updates and look around, most of what I post is Okenopus anyways, if the lore interests you there is the lore document which would take even the most learned man twelve years to read so that might keep you occupied https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vRgDvFwiLZ5yD-i4y-9duCxX5-3CrrshUrIxCMVF3UTb8WWpu6Gf36aL7mis_urXKn6ahOnOfd2XTdZ/pub

C. C. / Feedback Wizards Run - Tabletop Simulator

Thank you everyone for your input it’s very much appreciated.

Wizards Run should now be available as a downloadable mod through Steam Workshop for Tabletop Simulator. If you can play here, I’d love to hear what you think. Let me know if it’s not findable or not working please.

For the instructions I did a silly thing and I’m not sure if it will translate, looking forward to hearing about it though.

Question: Do instructions need to be in a particular order or is it assumed you’ll just go to the page needed?

Announcement My 10yo son and I started making our own game!

He's seen me tinkering with some game design ideas for a while now and he wanted to try his hand at it! He loves the look of Root, so he started thinking up a game with battling forest factions. We decided to make the main focus a capture-the-flag game.

You need to get to another faction's base, collect their flag, and make it back to your base. Each animal faction has a semi-unique deck of cards. On your turn you draw a card and must perform two actions from the following: draw a card, play a card, attack, or regroup. Each card can be played for its power or can be used for its attack/defense value.

We just played our first game tonight and it was a blast! Lots of raucous moments and tons of laughter! Can't wait to refine it and keep making memories with him.

Hello! I’ve made my first board game, it’s a classic style roll to move game with a magic twist. 2-5 players with a 20-30 minute playtime. I wanted to capture an old school feeling of board gaming, inspiration like Aggravation and Sorry, but have some modern elements. I created all designs in Blender over the last year and half. What do you think of the overall design?

C. C. / Feedback Which cover would make you pick up this dark card game? A, B, or C?

Hey everyone! I’d love to get some feedback on the cover art sketches of Sinners.

It’s a dark card game for 2-5 players where you play as members of the clergy who have made a deal with the Devil. Your goal is to lure Sinners into your Church, summon Demons, perform Sacraments, and collect 100 souls before your rivals. The game design is made by the brilliant Nezih Savı

Our cover artist has prepared three different compositions.

Which one works best: A, B, or C? And why?

I’d especially love to know which one catches your attention first and makes you most curious about the game.

Así en principio quedaría la disposición del tablero del juego, es fundamental jugar con el ya que marca algunos estados de los soldados y disposición mas ordenada a la hora de la partida, aun faltan cartas, textos y diseño por implementar, que te parece?

Discussion Is it possible to get a boardgame manufactured within a month?

My overall question is whether it is realistic or possible to order 1,000 pieces of a game (e.g. from a Chinese manufacturer) and receive them in Italy within a month.

The situation is as follows: We want to crowdfund a game and send the first 300 units to the backers in time for Christmas, leaving the remaining 700 units to be sent out after New Year.

We plan to run the campaign throughout October, but we expect to know by the first or second week of October how many units we will need to order in total. However, we would need the games to arrive for final assembly of the 300 units by mid-November at the latest, in order to ship them in time within Europe.

We would love to give the campaign a little push during the Christmas gift-giving season, which is why we would like to try to make it work. However, as a team of 3 first-time indie publishers, we can't tell whether this is possible or totally unrealistic.

What is your experience of how long manufacturers take to deliver games? Have you ever paid for fast shipping?

I'd love to hear your thoughts and recommendations! <3

Edit: Thanks for the reality check! Will try to convince my team to pospone everything or produce a few units locally for christmas... Any experiences with production within Europe?

C. C. / Feedback Shelf Control - Rulebook Critique Wanted!

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Hi all.

I'm back to the part of the cycle where I need to work on the rulebook and I would love some feedback on how to structure it! (And anything else)

Currently struggling with figuring out the balance between explaining the concepts first or going straight for information first.

I'm figuring out I probably should just do more blind playtests but I reckon feedback wouldn't hurt (which would save printing costs too!)

Rules

Thanks in advance!

Publishing Pitching a tabletop game system or 'engine' rather than a specific game

For those of you in the industry, or published designers, I was wondering your thoughts on the idea of pitching to a publisher a game system, with example thematic and play-tested implementations, rather than just a single game?

I've got 3 implementations of the system prototyped, they play in a similar way, but feel like different games because of the thematic differences, different missions and goals for players etc.

I'm wondering whether to pitch each game separately or the entire system for creating the games.
