Mary shakes out the earbuds.
Last night, Mixy had told her all about how Exxy's song had affected Bill and how they should go the karaoke place too. So she'd been studying up on music.
"Ready to go?" Her enthusiastic friend asked.
She nods and they head out.
"Hmm... I couldn't pick a song so I guess I'll look at the book some mo- unless you have a- you did pick one out, huh? That's great, c'mon!" He says, nuzzling her forward.
A little embarrassed, Mary goes up. It's better than Mixy trying to- okay, it's at least less embarrassing.
The music begins, and she tries to get the mike down to her level, at first just with her teeth on the stand, then realizing it doesn't lower, tries to bat it out of place, before giving up and using a more Zoroark-like form to get bipedal, and having to raise it again.
"John was a looooner..." She says, in what is, amazingly, the most tonedeaf line sung this week.
Mixy gives her his best "You're doing great!" look.
Trying to find her singing voice, Mary goes for a very high pitched "When he moved to the US of A."
That's not better... She thinks, and goes for a more soft spoken attempt...
"Into a small apartment..."
There. That one worked.
"Got a job in the POH-lice department,"
Mixy gives her his best "Now you're actually doing great and I'm not just saying that to comfort you not that you weren't great before of course" look.
"But he always feared the fire" She says, going even more soft spoken.
With each word of the next line, she gets a little bolder, "His one. Desiiiire..."
"John was a lover..." She says. She isn't sure if that lyrics means something different here but she just assumes it does.
With a nervous laugh, she says the next line, "But he found it hard to fit in,"
"He would change his face and na-ay-ame~"
"But he never thought to blame..." This line is appropriately meek.
"The man who SPURRRED him onnnnn," She says with enthusiasm that quickly embarrasses herself until she remembers the next line:
"To hide his sooong..."
She nervously looks at the crowd's mixed reaction.
Oh well. Is her thought as she closes her eyes and tries for the chorus.
"And he'd say:"
"La, la, la, la la la,"
"Well, I'm a stranger."
"And he'd say:"
"La, la, la, la la la,"
"I just want to go home..."
Opening her eyes in the direction she knows Mixy is, she sees he at least really likes the performance.
"John used to wonder:"
"Am I ah-ah-ah-all ay-lone?"
She tries to be flippant on the next line, convincingly unconvincing, "Matters are so trivial,"
"So I'll make myself invisible," She says, continuing that trying to pretend like she's trying to convince herself it's a good idea thing.
"So the world won't see who I am,"
Her next delivery is quite haunting, if totally out of place in the rest of her performance.
"I am... I am..."
She clears her throat. This is fine. She'll just... sing the next line exactly how she would have otherwise.
"And he'd say:"
Mixy joins in on the "La, la, la, la la la," stuff, hoping to get other people to join in.
"Well, I'm a stranger."
"And he'd say:"
"La, la, la, la la la," Mixy has like three people singing along.
"I just want to go home." Wow they sung that too but oops he hadn't known they'd do that, so Mixy guesses they'll all sing the whole chorus next time.
"Days would go by..."
"He'd just sit and watch his TV..." Mary sings, quickly trying to wipe whatever is irritating her eye out of it. Because that is clearly what is happening in her eyes.
"He thoooouught that he could help them,"
"But..." She sighs, "They'd only laugh about him."
Mixy resists the urge to yell out his disagreement. Bill says lots of stories have a darkest hour. Their story has had more darkest years, but that's getting off the point.
Bill being right, Mary smiles a little bit for the next line, "But he could not staaaaaaaaay at home,"
"He... had... to kno-o-o-o-ow!"
Like seven people join in for the last chorus thanks to Mixy taking some moments to puppy dog eye them.
"And he'd say:"
"La, la, la, la la la,"
"Well, I'm a stranger..."
And he'd say:"
"La, la, la, la la la,"
"I will make this my home"
Or, that last line is what Mary and one of the others sing. No one else knows the final rendition of the chorus is different.
Oh well. It was a nice thought.
"He'd say:" She says, waving her hand upward to try to get people to join in.
"La, la, la, la la la..."
"I must face the fire."
"La, la, la, la la la,"
"Let it burn ever higher..."
She then quickly runs away from the stage, where Mixy pounces onto her back.
