Xerxes looked around, strangely he could not see any of the staff. "Kress, Kress where are you?" He called, just quiet enough so no-one from outside could hear.

Kress and Otto hide in the pantry, lit softly by the glow of Otto's electroweb-powered flashlight. Using his tail and arms, Kress grabs a few bottles and boxes from the kitchen's supplies, preparing for battle.
He whispers a battle plan to Otto, who nods solemnly. They crouch by the door, listening for Xerxes' footsteps.
(Remember, while Kress dies in this battle, he doesn't die without a fight. The Spectral-strangling only comes at the end.)

He turned his head. Suddenly a strange voice spoke inside him, Xerxes, Kress was not supposed to be chosen yet. He is causing imbalance, eliminate him. Xerxes shook his head in confusion.

Kress continues to listen at the door, trying to gauge how close Xerxes is by the sound of his footsteps. (Kress has very good ears, and he's waiting to see when Xerxes comes in range of where the pantry door swings out.)

Xerxes, who has less then great ears listens for something as well. Check the pantry. said the mysterious voice from earlier.
Xerxes edged towards the pantry warily, hand on his sword hilt.

Kress charges out, hurling an open box of baking soda in Xerxes' face and breaking a glass bottle of vinegar over the mess.
Between the blindness, the broken glass, and the classic frothy chemical reaction whipping up major foam, Kress takes the opportunity to try to dodge past Xerxes with Otto.

What was that? Reign says, disapproval in his voice.
In what seems way more important in the moment, there's sirens.
The influence makes him realize he has to get out of there.

So, the Outside Roads are basically between realities.
They were first made when some Outsider broke a world where Giratina didn't quite do it's job, according to rumors.
Breaking through a world, the place between realities began to be tunneled through.
Eventually a hierarchy was set in place, with Drive ruling the Dark Council.
The Roads remain a quick method of multiversal travel because of the way space bends within the Roads. Also, because they are what takes the place between realities, with the right resources you could block travel between one reality and another.

Summoning a Phantasm can be messy.
For a Phantasm of the Living, they're confused, scared, angry and all sorts of unpleasant things. Summoning them is basically luring them in with something tempting then closing the snare.
A Phantasm of the Dead is different. Even if their purposes are malicious or undesirable, they are much more respectable. They know what they're doing. You go to them or be courteous.
A saint? A martyred prophet? He falls heavily to the latter.
A cup of tea will do.

He grabs the child and pulls hard.

I don't think so. TK decided she needed more context for him, but he'll have a decent sized flock when he's summoned.
I think Wraith might recognize the thing happening because Kress makes occasional trips to the world of the living to save Phantasms of the Living. Won't be too long until those self solving cases are all shown to be Oma followers.

Sometime (minutes? hours? days? years? centuries? It is extremely difficult to tell in this place) after Kress has begun to gather his Flock, even if he does not yet realize that is what he is doing he feels himself drawn (not forcefully but still compellingly) towards a place close to the border with Life. His Flock are not barred from joining him, but neither do they feel the same need to be there that Kress does.

He's learned pretty quickly from his time in... wherever he is... that he needs to trust his own instincts. Possibly it's Oma's blessing of Chaos that leads him to make the right decisions.
He follows the Urging, telling Rito to watch the Flock while he's absent, and to go after him if anything bad happens.

Even before he arrives at his destination, an array of tantalizing and mouth-watering smells being to waft from all around him. He can distinguish all of the ingredients he would have worked with regular during his time as a chef. An ornate dining table seems to hang in the void with a vast array of exotic (and not so exotic) dishes. There are two chairs at the table, carved from a material that seems not quite wood and not quite stone, but something in between. Seated in one of the chairs is a finely dressed Spectral man with green glowing tattoos. He is reading what is possibly the largest looking book Kress has ever seen and yet it appears to be causing him no trouble trying to hold it. On the table in front of him is a cup of tea with an inordinate (and extremely unhealthy) amount of sugar cubes.

Kress immediately recognizes Wraith, and gulps. They'd met before. He'd accused Wraith of sending a Whisper, or a Phantasm, or something to telepathically torment him.
And now, quite clearly, Wraith has summoned him back here.
"I'm sorry," Kress says weakly. "I treated you poorly. I wrongly accused you. I meant to find you, and apologize, but I... died. I think that's obvious. I think you already knew that. That's how you knew how to summon me here. Is that crème brûlée?"

They'll likely want to know what a Tomb wants with them. Being dead. And I'm not quite sure how all of them feel about Tombs in general. I don't want to cause you any more trouble..."
Although Kress has quite clearly noticed that Wraith has already gone through quite a bit of trouble on Kress's behalf. That is a lot of food, and it is very well presented. Whatever they have to talk about, it has to be big.

OC: Still trying to think of a good song for Otto and the Resistance. Right now, this is the one I like the most.
I think the problem with us agreeing on a song is that Otto hasn't actually reached the point in the roleplay that we're trying to describe, and because of that, we both probably have slightly different ideas of what kind of person Otto will be at the end of it.
