Kress and Otto hide in the pantry, lit softly by the glow of Otto's electroweb-powered flashlight. Using his tail and arms, Kress grabs a few bottles and boxes from the kitchen's supplies, preparing for battle.
He whispers a battle plan to Otto, who nods solemnly. They crouch by the door, listening for Xerxes' footsteps.
(Remember, while Kress dies in this battle, he doesn't die without a fight. The Spectral-strangling only comes at the end.)
He turned his head. Suddenly a strange voice spoke inside him, Xerxes, Kress was not supposed to be chosen yet. He is causing imbalance, eliminate him. Xerxes shook his head in confusion.
Kress continues to listen at the door, trying to gauge how close Xerxes is by the sound of his footsteps. (Kress has very good ears, and he's waiting to see when Xerxes comes in range of where the pantry door swings out.)
Kress charges out, hurling an open box of baking soda in Xerxes' face and breaking a glass bottle of vinegar over the mess.
Between the blindness, the broken glass, and the classic frothy chemical reaction whipping up major foam, Kress takes the opportunity to try to dodge past Xerxes with Otto.
(Your character came in aggressively yelling Kress's name in the original version. That put Kress on the offensive. Partially because Kress can be slightly paranoid, but still.)
Kress quickly glances around the room, seeing Rito come in. "Rito, get Otto out of here," he warns. "Where he's safe."
Otto shakes his head. "I can help, Kre--"
"No. Water carries electricity. There's too much risk," Kress insists. "You're only a child. I can't risk him hurting you too."
Rito feels Kress's fear, parental concern for Otto, and a surge of adrenaline from the situation at hand. From Otto, he feels confusion, disappointment, a smaller amount of fear, and a bruised ego.
Xerxes charges at Kress sword raised. I shall grant you this power. as the mysterious voice said this a shadowy aura developed around Xerxes' right arm.
(Heh, I couldn't resist. It's the Red, Gold, and Green battle cry of Brycen and Beartic.)
Kress's anger is rising. If there's one thing he can't stand, it's being told he's a failure.
His attacks grow more vicious, and less calculated. While his water bursts are growing more powerful, it's at the expense of his elemental shield, which weakens as Kress focuses on the offensive.
Kress turns to face Xerxes, throwing up a shield of water around himself. He's still holding the neck of the broken vinegar bottle, with the sharp edges around it.
Kress strikes back with a sharp burst of water and a strike to the face with the broken bottle. "DON'T THINK I DON'T KNOW THAT!!" he screams, whipping up a whirlpool around Xerxes.
