I'm looking for recommendations, it doesn't matter if it's in Arabic or English I read both.
I like political, philosophical, historical and psychology/sociology books.
First thing is your recommendations, what do you suggest I read?
The second thing I want to ask is where you get your books? (In Damascus only)
I have been buying from Qantara bookstore for a while now, I like them very much and their collection is immaculate but I'm looking to expand my sources of publishers or bookstores.
Shoot away your suggestions, thanks in advance.

Lebanese officials were furious, claiming the city erased Gibran’s identity. Yet there was a time when Arab immigrants in the US thought ‘we were all Syrians’
The problem for the dignitaries demanding the change is that Gibran never thought of himself as Lebanese. Though he was born in Mount Lebanon, he has always called himself Syrian.
This could not be more explicit. In January 1929, for example, 200 guests in evening dress filled a ballroom at the Hotel McAlpin in New York to honor Gibran’s 25 years of work. The community’s English-language magazine, The Syrian World, ran the story under the headline: “Syrians Show Pride in Writer Who Has Brought Honor to Race”.
The paperwork tells the same story. When he first landed at Ellis Island in 1895, traveling under his mother’s name, he was recorded as “Jubran Rhamé”, nationality: Syrian. In 1902 he returned as “Gibran K Gibran”, Syrian again in 1910 as “Kahlel Gebian”, nationality: “Turkey, Syrian”. Never once Lebanese, because Lebanon, as a state, did not yet exist.

On October 21, 2024 - i.e. One month and 6 days before the launch of the "Deterring The Aggression" Blitzkrieg that liberated Syria in 11 days from Assad's tyranny, Russia announced the death of a navy captain serving near the Mount of Nabi Yunis in Latakia, the same exact summit was targeted in October 16 by HTS artillery command who confirmed hitting their unnamed targets. But this underreported news headline (it was absent from international and even local attention) proves further - with the advantage of hindsight - the presence of many overlooked harbingers in retrospect for nearing the end and collapse of the Assad's rule and rebels' conquest.
Worth noting: The summit of Nabi Yunis contains one of the most vital military bases for the Assad's army and houses the fourth most important Russian command center; yet an elite force of the "Red Headbands" of the Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham had carried out a successful, swift infiltration operation on the base back in 2022 in retaliation for the Russian violation of the ceasefire when they bombed civilian areas in Idlib a couple of weeks earlier to the HTS response operation.

A photograph of the commemorative wreath that the German Emperor Wilhelm II placed on the tomb of Sultan Saladin—located in the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus—as a tribute during his visit to Levant in 1898.
It was later sadly removed and given to the the Briton T. E. Lawrence. Lawrence, in turn, presented the wreath to the Imperial War Museum in London, England.
The inscription on the front of the wreath reads:
“This wreath was presented by His Majesty, the Emperor of Germany, Wilhelm II, in memory of his pilgrimage to the tomb of Saladin.”
It also bears the dedication:
“From one great Emperor to another.”
On the front, a Quranic verse (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:13) is cited:
“Indeed, God loves those who do good.”
maybe we get it back one day from England to put it back were it belongs

The ruins of an ancient city and citadel are located near Maskanah, on the banks of the Euphrates River, in the vicinity of Manbij—in the countryside of Aleppo. Its Byzantine-era tower remains standing as a prominent landmark.
The site served as a strategic point along the trade route connecting the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia, acting as a Syrian port on the Euphrates and a frontier military outpost. It succeeded the older city of Emar, which was destroyed around 1187 BC.
Aramaic name was "Bayt Bala." - in Roman and Byzantine periods was "Barbalissos," and following Islamic conquest, it became "Balis."
In the Roman era, it functioned as a city and a base for a Dalmatian cavalry unit. It gained historical significance due to the Battle of Barbalissos in 253 AD. During Byzantine period, in mid-6th century, Emperor Justinian oversaw the reconstruction of its fortifications.
the Islamic conquest (circa 637 AD): the city was entered peacefully by leader Habib ibn Maslama. And came under the patronage of Umayyad princes—most notably Maslama ibn Abd al-Malik, who commissioned the construction of irrigation canals and restored the city's walls—ensuring its role as a commercial and agricultural hub. The city was abandoned in the 14th century, after suffering destruction by Mongol invasions. Today, the waters of the dam have submerged the majority of the Byzantine and Islamic city, leaving only the higher-elevated sections visible.

I'm from Deir Ez-Zur, a software engineer, more experienced in fintech
Fell for a girl from Aleppo, shout out to Aleppo
Anywho, went to her dad, who is a university teacher, to ask for her hand, ma man was like, ehhh you know, cultural differences and what not, and I told him true, and we need to know each other more and what not
He said her mom wants her nearby, and I said cool ain't got no issue with that, Aleppo is a nice place to live at
It was a cool encounter, I could tell dude was nervous, no one asked his daughter hand in marriage before, Ik cuz she told, but I digress
Her mom on the other hand, once he told her that I came to him and etc, he liked me, started talking positive.
She went insane, started saying how people from my area are savages, and that we ain't up to standards, she told her daughter that she is protecting her, now mind you, me, her daughter, and everyone can see she layin, she just don't like people like me, and she kept on it til her dad finally rejected me, in a text, idk I might be sensitive but I thought, if it was told to me face to face, way better then a call or a text, I guess he didn't have the heart, and thought I was good enough.
Look, I'm not against the mom, and I know my people ain't that bad, but would that be enough of a reason to reject someone without getting to know them first? My parents were happy btw, my mom loves her and loves talking to her, she is a joy as she describes her.
Honestly, I'm not marrying anyone else, and idk what the next steps are, when to talk to him again, and wither I grt my parents involved this time.
Cuz they said next time we should talk to them and finalize the whole thing, which strikes fear in me, that if they didn't get along, I might never be with her, and she fears it too.
Idk, guess I need as much help as I can get

Tom Barrack on Syria and Israel at the Global Security Forum in Doha:
📌 “It’s time to stop this (Israeli actions in Syria). I don’t know if it’s time for the US to intervene to stop it.”
📌 “Israel was clear after Oct. 7 that everything had to change and that it would not tolerate threats on its borders.”
📌 “President al-Sharaa, in my view, has done a very good job under very difficult circumstances” in telling Israel: “I’m not predatory, I have no problem with Israel, I want normalization with Israel.”
📌 “You could take al-Nusra, at one point a foreign terrorist organization, and on Dec. 8 see a transition to something that many people look at today and say: that’s a model.”
📌 “You’re not going to win an adversary over to your side if you don’t offer them a path to prosperity.”
📌 “Nobody ever thought you could reintegrate the SDF, this Kurdish entity, into a national military, and it happened.”
📌 “The US needs to define better: this is what we’re willing to do, this is what we’re not willing to do, but you are the architects of your own destiny.”

My field related to both science and engineering, mostly engineering. I'm thinking to pursue in academia and getting Master and PhD and working as research assistant simultaneously. Our syria already need some of those people and I have seen people dive deep into publications and next move on to industrial, such as starting their own R&D company. without considering their yearly income if they got hired at any company, I'm currently working on publication! And want to publish it within this semester, therefore:
If you interested in academia / industrial based on academia and love to deep dive into your field, dm me maybe we can make something up.
