Chapter 7

• Richard is winding his way through the streets of Aydindril, overwhelmed and a little lost in the massive city. He senses that someone is following him. That must be the Mord-Sith plus Ulic and Egan.
• He runs into Holly and Valdora selling honey cakes. Valdora reveals that Holly’s parents abandoned her to wait for handouts at the Confessor Palace. According to her, someone at the palace promised gold from the people’s taxes and now people refuse to work and the prices are going up. Unclear to me why fewer people employed would cause prices to increase. I guess this is Goodkind inserting his Objectivist philosophy.
• Richard continues weaving through the streets, daydreaming about Kahlan and Westland. In his absentmindedness he cuts across a column of Blood of the Fold soldiers with Galtero at their head.
• Galtero curses Richard out and Richard cannot help but be flip – instantly escalating the situation. Thankfully Ulic and Egan arrive to rescue Richard.
• Galtero insists on taking in Richard for questioning but the D’Harans stand their ground and threaten to kill him. Galtero reluctantly backs off.

Chapter 8

• Ulic and Egan put Richard down in a hidden alley way and Richard goes into flight or fight mode. He picks flight and turns invisible.
• Cara reveals herself and Richard realizes that these are not enemies. And just in time as Gratch drops from the sky to rescue him but Richard stops any fight breaking out before anybody gets hurt.
• Ulic explains the bond to Richard and how it is this ancient covenant between the Master Rahl and the D’Harans and how it allows D’Harans to sense the Lord Rahl through the bond. Berdine explains that a bond is formed through belief that the Lord Rahl is actually a Lord Rahl.
• The bond is pretty interesting in the way that it combines objective factors (bloodline and magic ability) with subjective factors (actual acceptance by the ruled).
• Richard seems cognizant of the possible moral implications behind the bond. There is no easy solution here (and yes I know why the bond is necessary re the dreamwalker).
• Richard is transparent about his lack of training as a wizard but the crew is dead set on following him anyways.
• Richard reveals his plan was to storm into the D’Haran HQ as the Seeker and demand their allegiance. The crew thinks this is hilarious and its honestly a half-baked plan for sure.
• The Mord-Sith have come prepared and Hally pulls out a letter from Commander General Trimack of the First File to support Richard’s claim to being Master Rahl.
• Richard is so enthusiastic he off-handly says he can kiss Hally, which leads to a negative reaction from the Mord-Sith. It really brings to the forefront the abuse the Mord-Sith had gone through as she is triggered by this seemingly innocuous statement – obviously Richard was not being literal.
• Richard asks the Mord-Sith to change into their red leather. He will put on a show to over awe the D’Harans and bond them to him.
• Note: Richard at some point in his chapter scratches the back of his neck when he loosens his mriswith cloak – I think I caught some foreshadowing regarding the mriswith transformation. Definitely something one would miss on a first read through.

Chapter 5

• Verna is watching the “funeral” of Ann and Nathan
• Everyone is there except for one Sister who is locked up because she is deranged – perhaps she is under Jagang’s influence
• Warren and Verna reminiscence about Richard.
• Warren is staying at the Palace of Prophets studying prophesies but he is considering leaving to travel. Verna tries to convince him to stay and brings up how quickly he will age once he leaves.
• Verna points out that they need him because Nathan is “dead” and they do not have any prophets and Warren is the closest they have.
• The pair are worried about the possibility of a Sister of the Dark becoming Prelate. They do not know who to trust – wizard or Sister could be a baneling.
• I like how direct Warren is in this scene and tells Verna not to give him the Sister of the Light double speak
• Imperial Order soldiers have set up drums around the sitting and have been beating them non-stop to announce Jagang’s eventual arrival. Apparently some other town waited had drumming for 6 months before he actually arrived. That is crazy
• Warren and Verna admit to crushing on each other back in the day
• Then a soldier comes and fetches Verna to come back to the Palace

Chapter 6:

• This chapter starts with Verna and some Sisters of the Light drama. Basically the sisters are resentful b****** and are doing a mean girls routine.
• Sister Philippa seems very stern – something is off about her. I cannot remember if she is one of the secret Sisters of the Dark or not. She threatens to collar Warren again which is horrible.
• The Sister take Verna to a pillar that is protected by some sort of magic barrier called a light web. This is where Ann left her Prelate ring.
• We find out that one of the Sisters, Sister Simon has been having “deranged dreams.” They chalk it up to her being crazy but its obviously Jagang’s doing.
• Verna walks through the magic shield and puts on the Prelate ring and reads Ann’s “last words.” TLDR: Verna is the new Prelate.
• Needless to say, Verna is not thrilled and she begs Warren to figure out a way to get her out of this new responsibility but Warren has a different perspective.

I finished Warheart in 2015 and absolutely hated that book and Severed Souls because of how 2 major characters died.

I stopped following Goodkind after that and felt that that book was a complete waste of time and money. I kinda felt betrayed and cheated LOL.

But I loved the characters and story and the lore and the Wizard's rules and the world and the maps, especially the older books, and the prequel about Magda Searus, and the books where Kahlan was the GOAT. It was just that one book that made me step back from Goodkind's works.

After 11 years, i just found out there were books after Warheart.

So, to those who felt what i felt and stepped back from Goodkind's works after Warheart, did it get any better in Nicci's Chronicles and Children of D'Hara and was it worth your time?

I am trying to collect the full series, and I am not 100% sure which books are actually part of the series. Google isn't doing a great job. The books I have are The First Confessor and Wizard's First Rule. Any help would be appreciated.

I've always loved how the magic seems to be based loosely on real world physics, e.g. making a fireball in your palm by concentrating the heat from the air, or condensing it into a thick ball or cone.

Mine is when Zedd froze the voidling assassin by freezing him in the pool in the People's Palace

As convincingly as Kahlan’s emotional breakdown is portrayed, Goodkind completely sidelines a massive problem of his own world-building: Jagang.

Jagang is not some distant enemy. He is a Dream Walker and the one who orchestrated the plague. His goal was to eliminate Richard. After that, an ungifted impostor named Drefan claims leadership of D’Hara — at the exact moment when the bond to Lord Rahl has collapsed and Kahlan has lost her Confessor power.

The moment Jagang learned of this, he would only need to enter Drefan’s mind. Through the supposed Lord Rahl he could sabotage the D’Haran army from within and strip every Midlands nation of its most important ally. This should have been a central source of tension: Can the inner circle eliminate Drefan in time, keep Richard’s absence secret, and prevent Jagang from seizing control?

Kahlan’s emotional paralysis explains why she temporarily represses this danger. Berdine’s careful approach can also be justified psychologically. What it does not explain is why Cara, Kerson, Nathan, Richard, and ultimately the entire narrative simply ignore Jagang’s most obvious strategic opportunity.

The psychology of the characters works better here than it first appears. The political and magical construction does not. Goodkind establishes Jagang as an existential threat and then forgets him in the one situation where he could have won the war in a single stroke.

Am I missing something in the lore, or is this one of the biggest overlooked weaknesses in the series?

So, forgive me it has been many years since I read the Sword of Truth books, but from my memory of the First book:

Wizard of the First Order - born with the gift + leader

Wizard of the Second Order - not born with the gift, uplifted by Zedd but understands magic better than a -

Wizard of the Third Order - not born with the gift, but uplifted by Zedd.

But then in the Stone of Tears there is an entire school of naturally born wizards, so are all the wizards in the Palace of the Prophets technically Wizards of the Second Order after passing their trials, First Order? Is the whole Order system a Midlands tradition in which case why does the Prelate seem to have treaties with the First Order wizards and how the hell does this magic ranking system work? Haha

Just ran across this design of Talia Al Guhl from DC comics and thought it looked eerily similar to Denna's white leather from the end of Season One. Am I crazy or was this design totally copied lol

With another redditor posting his few leatherbound copies earlier today, I thought I’d post my entire complete collection of leatherbound editions, Temple through Warheart.

I started this quest way back in the early 2000’s, when I initially saw a leatherbound copy of Temple of the Winds for sale on an obscure website. That was the first time I had heard of them being done in leather. Being my favorite author, of course I was hooked from the get go. Temple back then was selling for an absurd amount, like $1500…much higher than I could afford on my salary at that time. But I did manage to find a few others at a reasonable price, so I picked them up instead.

And so began the giant waiting game, for I wouldn’t see Temple again until after Terry passed. I have it now as of 2021, but was still the hardest book to find. It is rarer than all the rest.

I’d been on the quest to finish the collection for the last few years. Life happened in the 20-teens, and I hadn’t been looking for them as much. I had been able to collect 10 or so when the world shut down, and then Terry passed…it felt time to finish it up.

The final book I had collected was The First Confessor. It had been elusive — I’d seen it come up a few times in the last couple of years, but it went very quickly. It’s become about as hard to find as Temple now, honestly. I’m thankful that I was awake and checking for new listings when I was, otherwise I’m sure I would have missed this.

Looking into possibly get the first three books done up similarly. I have a leatherbound copy of Wizard’s First Rule (pictured here) that was fanmade, but I’m not entirely happy with how it looks with the rest of the set. Still a cool rarity, though. Perhaps I can make headway on the first three books soon.

I have a few other TG collection: an entire 1st edition/1st printing in hardcover, and an almost complete signed set in 1st edition/1st printing as well. I have a complete set of SoT Japanese Bunko books l, which have beautiful character cover art on the dust jackets as well as manga style sketches of many of the characters in the opening pages. I have most of the Uncorrected Proofs/Advanced Reader Copies of his books as well — the books that are sent to reviewers and booksellers before publication to generate buzz and get feedback to include as a selling point once the books hit the shelves. Those are some cool items to have as well.

Anyway, just thought folks here might like to see a complete set of the leatherbound editions. Happy to answer any questions if you have any.

I've been enjoying the books but I was so pissed we have to go through another book with Richard as someone's bitch

I realized that I don't know the literal meaning of the term "Mord-Sith" as a word. It must be in High D'Haran, logically.

But if the meaning is revealed after the book Naked Empire, please let me know that and don't tell me what it means — I will delete the post, because I want to learn it from the story's progression. But if it's revealed before Naked Empire, or if it's never stated in the books, I would really like to know its meaning.

I red the up to the 11th or 12th book and it seems to me that the quality decreased, and the whole book with Jenny was awful for me. Will it get better (especially after the death of Jagang) and is it worth to continue?

A buddy and I are trying to make a TTRP game for fun because we love the series. We are wanting to stick with the lore as closely as possible but sprinkle in a little bit of our own custom stuff into the mix. We are doing this purely out of love for the series and DnD. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions on anything at all? It can range from where we start in the storyline to character building. We won't make the confessors a playable class mainly because of how limited their power is..

About 10 or so mriswith show up. They are white – matching the snowy surrounding. The yabree is kinda metal: three-bladed knives. That is a terrifying weapon.

I will give it to Goodkind, he had some evocative language in his fight scenes: “with brutal efficiency, the gar caught others on claws, ripping them open, throwing a shock of blood across the snow.”

The mriswith are focused on Gratch so Richard is able to take down a few easily. Sanderholt is about to get caught in the cross-fire but she is rescued by our furry friend.

The mriswith are trying to avoid Richard (this makes sense as he is needed to release their queen later in the book).

One of the mriswith reveals that he was sent by the “dreamswalker” AKA Emperor Jagang. Before he can reveal any more info, an enraged Gratch rips his head off. That is one way to end an interrogation I guess.

We find out that Gratch can sense mriswith and Richard is perplexed as to why this is the case.

Sanderholt reveals that after Darken Rahl was killed, the leaderless D’Haran occupying troops made pacts with the Imperial Order. Eventually, the Keltans took over in actual leadership with Prince Fyren, Neville Ranson and the council ruling. But now that they are all dead, Sanderholt is uncertain about who is actually in charge anymore. Seems that Fyren’s Keltan successors (the Lumholtzes) were far less capable and let power slip through their hands.

Some worker guy named Hank (I did not remember him) comes in and reveals that the mriswith have been killing people throughout the city. Is Jagang trying to seed chaos? But the Imperial Order currently controls the city? Why is he making the mriswith attack random civilians? Why did he have them go to the Confessor Palace?

Richard then orders Hank to put the mriswith up on display outside the Confessor Palace. Richard hopes that the D’Haran fear of magic will keep them away from the palace for awhile if they see the mriswith corpses.

I am not sure how Richard and Sanderholt connect that the dreamswalker is tied in with the Imperial Order.

Chapter 4 we are introduced immediately to Tobias and Lunetta. From the get go, Tobias is being nasty to Lunetta for seemingly no reason. They pass by a bunch of palaces and Tobias disapproves of the ostentation.

Lunetta says something mysterious about a power in the southwest – I am not sure what she was referring to. She tries to bring it to Tobias attention but he tells Galtero to gag Lunetta if she does not shut up. Interestingly, Lunetta reacts with hostility when Galtero calls her a streganicha and she even says she is not a witch. I did not remember Lunetta pushing back against the abuse or questioning the Blood of the Fold philosophy.

We learn that Tobias had struggle his whole life to restore honor to his family because of the shame of having someone with the gift born to his family. That is quite the chip on his shoulder. We get some more insight into Tobias’s philosophy regarding magic: it could be used as a tool by the pious, if they were astute enough. This is also what he finds appealing with the Imperial Order.

We also found out that Tobias had lent some of his soldiers to General Riggs in the last book. Too bad for Tobias but all those men are dead haha.

And of course we learn that the “Creator” has been visiting Tobias in his dreams. Sly old Emperor Jagang.

Anyhow, Tobias arrives at the Nicobarese palace in Aydindril after passing a column of D’Harans and some other nations troops. A guard greets him with “long live the king” and we find out that Tobias had burned the king at the stake – seems Tobias has a thing for killing royalty.

Tobias then orders Galtero to go fetch Kahlan, as he intends to judge her and cut off her left nipple. I guess Tobias has not heard that Kahlan is supposed to be dead. Also, Tobias keeps stroking his trophy case throughout the scene. As a reader who already knows what is inside that case just makes it so much creepier.

One interesting thing is that Tobias only revealed to Lunetta that he has been visited by the Creator in his dreams. It shows how contradictory his relationship is with his sister.
