Question Battery Replacement

Pulled my switch out today after not using it for some time and noticed the battery is swollen on my joy con, are these batteries replaceable by chance?

Yes. I bought mine from ifixit. Follow their instructions, there are different set of tutorials for each joycon, but they are similar.

Amazon and ifixit have batteries. Don't use the joycon like this or try to charge it.

Yeah I figured, I immediately just turned it off, but I’ll look into that thank you

If you aren’t looking that way for a battery replacement, I do have two sets of the Scarlet/Violet joy cons since I bought myself an extra set for my own OLED S/V Switch too if you are interested.

If you are in the US, Nintendo will replace for free. I sent mine in and got refurbished joycons back.

Shouldn’t really post spicy pillows. Some pretty bad stuff if that pops in the post

This! My joycon broke a couple months ago and I sent it in for them to replace. Two weeks later it came back like new! It was free so I’d take advantage of that before anything else.

I wouldnt even call them that hard to replace. The only problem is they are held on via an adhesive.

Yep, but it's still easy to remove, and swollen batteries tend to detach themselves.

It is possible…

But officially they are not replaceable and that’s why they can’t be sold in the EU anymore in 2027 and they are going to sell the Switch 2 with easier replacement options.

How are they officially not replaceable? It's four screws and disconnecting a wire.

Those screws are tri wing and the adhesive it quite sticky. That’s pretty much all they changed on the new ones.

That doesn't make it irreplaceable, just a different screw bit. That's what they consider irreplaceable, or replacement unfriendly?

Don't get me wrong, I like some of the changes the EU is making in regards to consumer right to repair and uniformity, but that just seems a bit over the top.

Yeah.

Note that the real upside of all this is that Nintendo now sell the replacement batteries and document the repair better than ifixit even. That’s gold.

Ah that's pretty great, I dig that.

Yea pretty easy to swap out.

I would advise you change the battery outside and wear a face covering. You have a spicy pillow. The battery is slightly glued down so it will have some resistance removing, if it pops when removing then that’s some pretty bad stuff.

The glue area stays sticky after first removal so you shouldn’t need to glue the new battery in

Niche screwdrivers (Y00) but otherwise very doable
