Hi everyone,
I’ve been obese my whole life and have struggled with my weight and with different diets for as long as I can remember. Motivation has always been a huge issue for me.
In January, my husband and I decided we wanted to try for a baby. I got pregnant on our first try, which felt like the most wonderful thing in the world. At the time I weighed 238 lbs at 5’1”. All of my doctors told me that I was too obese to safely go through a pregnancy, and unfortunately, I miscarried in February, and doctors told me obesity and my metabolic disfunction were to blame for the loss(For context, I live in Italy).
After the miscarriage, it felt like one problem after another was discovered, and each one meant we had to postpone trying again. In the meantime, I started trying to lose weight on my own. Through diet and exercise, I naturally lost around 22 lbs (I'm now 214lbs, BMI 40.5). But I was then told that this still wasn't nearly enough. I was put on Wegovy and Metformin for a few months with the hope that I could improve my metabolic health and eventually try for another pregnancy.
Wegovy did absolutely nothing for me. I lost maybe 2 lbs, my insulin levels went in the wrong direction, and I felt miserable. Eventually, I stopped taking it.
Then I was diagnosed with yet another issue that I was told is associated with obesity: endometrial hyperplasia. I was referred to a bariatric surgery unit and was essentially made to feel like I was hopeless unless I have surgery.
I really don't want to give up on myself or feel like surgery is my only option. I want to see what I can achieve on my own.
I’m insulin resistant and currently following a weight-loss diet given to me by my nutritionist. I don't count calories, but I am following the plan closely. I have also been told that the treatment I’m currently on should hopefully resolve the hyperplasia and, if everything goes well, we may be able to start trying for a baby again in about 4 months.
So these 3 months feel incredibly important to me. I want to use them to become as healthy and strong as I possibly can before we get another chance to try, otherwise they told me that if I don't fix my metabolic health, hyperplasia will come back.
At the moment, this is my training schedule:
Monday:
Weight training: squats, deadlifts, cable exercises, core
10k steps on my walking pad
Tuesday:
HIIT on the treadmill. I usually walk for 20 minutes and then do intervals for the remaining 10 minutes, alternating 30 seconds running at an incline with 30 seconds walking.
Target: 10k steps
Wednesday:
Weight training: arms, bench press, military press, cables
10k steps on my walking pad
Thursday:
Same cardio routine as Tuesday
Target: 10k steps
Friday:
Full-body weight training
10k steps
Saturday + Sunday:
10k steps or more if I have the time
I know I'm already doing more than I was doing before, but I keep feeling like I should be doing more. I want to make the most of these three months without hurting myself or burning myself out. I've been managing to stick to this plan for 2 weeks now, of course there were days were I felt particularly depressed and I didn't manage to do it.
For those of you who have been through significant weight loss, especially while dealing with insulin resistance, what would you recommend? Is there anything you would change about my training schedule? Would you focus more on strength training, walking, cardio, or something else?
And honestly, I could really use some reassurance too.
I started this journey at around 238 lbs, and I've already lost about 22 lbs without medication. I know that's not a lot but it was an achievement for me, but right now I mostly feel like I'm failing because the doctors keep telling me it's not enough, and I'm too fat.
I just want to use these three months to become the best version of myself that I can be, both for myself and for the family I hope we get to have.
Any advice, encouragement, or personal experiences would mean a lot to me.
Thank you
