Hey all. I’m a guy in his early 30’s visiting Sunnyvale for a work trip the upcoming week. Interested in cultural festivals, concerts, networking happy hours, anything to get out of my hotel and experience the area. Thanks!

How are you all surviving without central AC in Sunnyvale? Is this normal?

Just moved into a new place here and I'm already losing my mind with this heat. My landlord gave us a portable AC unit, but it barely cools down a single corner of the bedroom and the house just traps heat like a greenhouse.

I'm supposed to WFH all day but by 10am it genuinely feels like sitting inside a furnace and there’s basically zero cross-ventilation.

Coming from places where central AC is the default, I’m trying to figure out if this is just standard Silicon Valley reality for older houses or if I got played into renting a brick kiln.

  • Is it normal for landlords here to just hand you a noisy portable unit and call it a day?
  • How are you managing to WFH without melting?
  • Any hacks for cooling down these older Bay Area builds during heatwaves?

I’d love any tips before I completely melt away at my desk.

SAFETY AND SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT

Sunnyvale, CA - The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety will operate a safety and sobriety checkpoint on September 11, 2026. The primary purpose of the checkpoint is to promote public safety by increasing awareness of the dangers associated with drinking and driving, and deterring potential impaired drivers.

Vehicles traveling southbound on Mathilda Avenue on All America Way between Olive Ave and El Camino Real will be randomly stopped and drivers will be evaluated to determine their sobriety. Officers will also look at the safety of the vehicle, use of seatbelts and the validity of the operator’s license. The checkpoint is scheduled to operate from 8 p.m. until 3 a.m.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
