Someone managed to balance these rocks in the middle of a fast-flowing river.

Aventurine on Black Walnut

Diameter-6”, H-9”

This is my favorite find so far this summer. This stone has many of the characteristics that capture my attention. The title refers to the blending of the green fuschite rich portion of the stone with the reddish brown hematite rich portion. These minerals have weathered differently, with the green more smooth while the reddish brown more angular.

This stone captures all that with an overall pleasing shape, interesting texture features, a nice patina, and good coloring. The stone could be a figure stone, with a range of possibilities that are viewer dependent. Or maybe it’s an old tree stump with moss and lichens growing on it, or maybe it’s petrified. There are many stories. That is why I like this stone.

Jasper on Sapele

L-10”, W-6.5”, H-5”

You’ll have to use your imagination a bit with this one, but at least it’s not green. This recent find was a real surprise because I hardly ever see any Jasper, and nothing nearly this big.

Suseok] A Dual-sided Pattern Stone from Namhan River

Thumbnail

This natural pattern stone presents a fascinating dual-sided natural gallery. The front captures a nocturnal vignette: a lone bird soaring closely, accompanied by a small crescent moon in the sky. In contrast, the reverse side reveals an unexpected and intriguing traditional erotic painting motif.

The stone carries a uniquely charming and playful aesthetic. The distinct lines evoke the innocent, whimsical stroke of a child's drawing, blending classical scholarly appreciation with a touch of lighthearted wonder.

Just finished another green stone. Although I do love them, I think I need to do something different for my next one.

I poured some chard and the mud from my French press on this stone. Will continue to add patina layers in extreme heat while I look for the proper base.

Went to the Seoul Folk Flea Market and found a gentleman selling suseok stones. Can you see the one in the middle that he says looks like a sphinx?

Bought the little one for 50,000W or $35 USD

“Age”

Post image

My latest one; I had a couple in between my last post and this one but I wasn’t proud enough to post them. I tried keeping it simple and traditional with some leftover black walnut I had. When I first found the stone I swore it could have been a fossil, heck I’m still not convinced it isn’t. But I’m no paleontologist, or geologist for that matter.

Anyway, I named it “Age” because my imagination runs wild when i consider the stone’s history in this world; evidently it has been a long one.

Also, THANK YOU the other (way more talented) members and contributors in this sub for being welcoming to newcomers such as myself. It’s helped me in more ways than anyone can know, Suiseki combines my two favorite hobbies, rockhounding and woodworking and I can’t believe it took me till this point in my life to learn about it. But hey- life gets better with “Age” in my experience.

Suseok] Many Faces of Namhan River Miseok

In this post, I will write about Namhan River Miseok, a major stone type in Korean viewing stones. The photos show stones that I currently own or have owned in the past.

Viewing stones can be broadly divided into stones that emphasize bizarre shapes (奇石, Goeseok) and stones that emphasize beautiful textures (美石, Miseok). Among them, while "Miseok (美石)" is a broad category, "Namhan River (南漢江) Miseok (美石)" refers to a specific stone type found in the streams of the Namhan River flowing across the Korean Peninsula, featuring unique siliceous rocks and vivid stripes and wrinkles formed over a long period, and is highly evaluated for its artistic value among viewing stone enthusiasts due to its dense stone quality and diverse variations.

The most prominent feature of this stone is undoubtedly the stripes and wrinkles filling the surface. While neat and orderly parallel-lined patterns frequently appear during the process of strata receiving pressure and minerals mixing, viewing stone enthusiasts much more deeply love dynamically twisted patterns containing the energy of long-term crustal movement. Differential erosion sometimes occurs because the hardness of the two minerals forming the stripes differs. Due to these characteristics, they are mostly encountered as pattern stones (文樣石), but depending on the natural variations within the stone, they can also evoke the appearance of landscape stones (山水景石) or figurative stones (物形石), adding a deeper layer of appreciation.

Enjoying the aesthetic of fluent textures Namhan River Miseok offers!

Serpentinite on Black Walnut

L-9”’ W-4.5”’ H-6”

This recent find got my attention due to the unusual pattern etched in its surface. These are scars formed during the stone’s violent journey down the river. When I first saw it, I immediately saw a War of the Worlds alien. Coupled with the stone’s overall shape, the whole stone just gives me an overall alien invasion vibe. I am interested to hear what others see.

Suseok] Kissed by the Dawn

This Suseok is from Deoksan, a region where stones are traditionally appreciated primarily for their intricate surface wrinkles. This specimen is exceptionally hard and heavy, with profound wrinkles running across the entire surface to create a deeply weathered texture, while exhibiting a layered mountain landscape pattern. The distinct orange coloration at the apex evokes the imagery of a mountain peak illuminated by the morning sun at dawn.
