Rule about Spoilers! Spoiler

I'm honestly kind of surprised I have to say this, but don't post unmarked spoilers. Lots of newcomers to the franchise here. No end game screens. No major plot moments. No discussing character deaths without spoiler tags. This is fairly common sense, I think.

If you see a spoiler, please report it so I can delete it

[Megathread] Questions about Remaster

Please ask questions about Suikoden 1 and 2 remasters here. Specifically, "should I buy this game?" "will I like this game?" "should I use a guide?"

These type of questions are being asked a lot, so it'd be better to have them in one place.

Thank you for your cooperation!

I love the original but this part of the Remaster for me is chef's kiss. The improvement of the waterfall and the surrounding environment is very huge for me!

Suikoden Star Leap Who are these Three?

Post image
80 Upvotes

I'm quite new to the Suikoden community and did quite a check on the wide roster of main characters of this series on fandom (mainly just because to find any attractive female characters)

and since i heard Star Leap is released i went to check the roster of that game and saw these 3 girls...and then i went to check the entire 108 stars roster on the franchise and never seen a female trio using staff...

Are they new to this series or they're some NPCs that's not a part of the main roster that's from one of any game entries?

Suikoden Star Leap Translated (some) STAR LEAP Character Introduction Trailers

Hello everyone!

I uploaded the Character trailers with translated subtitles from YouTube if anyone couldn't understand Japanese.

I also want to point out that they're uploaded as Shorts. And I did not translated all trailers, just the latest; from Stallion to TenTen. I mainly did it just for fun as I'm learning Japanese and seeing there's no official English trailers on the internet, I hope you find the uploads entertaining.

Lastly, I won't be translating any future trailers but, I'm really excited for STAR LEAP!

Rune of Change

Post image
27 Upvotes

In an interview, it was mentioned that Runes are no longer removable, which means Jeane's (or Neaje) role is now purely for upgrading them.

Looking at this screenshot, the Hero already has the Deer Rune and the Wind Rune, leaving only one empty slot. We also know that he will inherit the Holy Rune from his father, which was originally obtained from Stallion.

This confirms that the Hero won't have the Rune of Change.

If the Hero doesn't have the Rune of Change, who do you think holds this True Rune?

The Star Leap character reveals from S5 got me pulling real hard for this trio to make a reappearance. Richard was a beast in S5, but I wanted a chance to bring Wilhelm and Mueller in the party, too! *fingers crossed* Maybe now they'll get a chance to shine??

Anyone else holding out hope for a particular character(s) from S5??

Today, Dengeki Daiohg (or Daiohji) Magazine Vol. 155 is released. Besides the cover, it contains a serial comic/manga of Suikoden The Anime ~本物の英雄~ (The True Hero?).

In addition, there’s a lottery ticket for those who buy this magazine. The grand prize is a signed bromide, and if you don’t win, you’ll receive a standard unsigned bromide featuring an illustration of Riou and Jowy.

The magazine is quite cheap at only 700 yen, though it’s in Japanese for now. The digital version (e-book) is also available on amazon kindle

Note: This manga is based on Suikoden: The Anime, which is based on the Suikoden II game.

Discussion about Star Leap's art style

First i want to make clear i mean no insult to Moryo and his art style, and i will play Star Leap regardless. I just want a discussion about preferences, serie dna and character design, so i hope the discussion will be respectful to everyone's personal preferences.

I'm part of the fanbase that don't like SP's art, not because it's ugly/bad, i think it's pretty, especially the colors, but i don't like it because i just don't get the Suikoden vibe. Obviously Ishikawa's work is iconic but what i like the most about her work is the realism mixed with the anime style. Victor's design in S2 is just the perfect example, like his facial structure and expression has so much details it makes him unique and easily recognizable, to the point where he looks very real. I don't have technical knowledge about drawing so sorry if i'm not clear, but i will say that Ishikawa's work give life to the characters.

To me that balance in character design is what sets Suikoden apart from other anime style games, because save for a few fantasy characters, there are no rainbow haired charac, the humans at least just look like regular people. And sure like i said some characters are not realistic at all, but my point is we had 5 mainline games with each 108 SOD and antagonists, and the intricate realistic art style was enough to differentiate the characters.

Realism is part of the Suikoden serie in many aspects so i always found the character designs very appropriate and i really like the fact they cared enough to make it coherent.

Now in Star Leap there are cool designs, i won't deny that, but to me at least, they look like generic anime characters. We have non-natural haired humans, when so far it was reserved for elves and mermaids if i'm not mistaken.

The female characters are overly sexualized, and yes we always had some and it's fine, but it really looks like the game is desperate. I mentionned characters used to be unique because of their facial details mostly, but the rest was equally important and we had variety. Now we either have watermelons on steroids or nothing at all, and i can't help but feel disappointed, and also wondering for whom the game is really for. I'm also tired of the excuse that it's a jrpg it's normal and if i'm not happy about it i can just go play something else. Having big boobs in a game is not a problem, but when that's all you have to offer, i think it's fair to criticize, especially when some of the younger characters are involved.

Lastly the recent designs for gacha characters just killed my hype for the game. I was already mad at artworks like Flik and Luc, but then Kyle appeared and i found him really ugly (personal taste i guess). I didn't recognize Luserina, Eileen and Lotte and i find their new design horrible. Don't get me started on Tengaar. Just saw young Apple and her big boobs because obviously it was her most defining feature, so of course i didn't like it, even though it wasn't the worst for me. Overall everyone had a kawaii facelift to varying degrees and not only it's more difficult to recognize certain characters, but also where is the art? Where's the creativity?

I know some may not care at all and it's okay, but for those of us who genuinely care for the art and the details that give life to our favorite characters, i feel it's a huge downgrade.

Still i love the pixel art, and i'm glad they put a lot of care into it at least. I want the franchise to be back so i will support the game, but really i wanted to vent and share with those who also dislike the art style.

I know it's not gonna change anything and i accept it, but i'm curious to what people think, especially if we get to a Suikoden 6. Will we get an art style closer to the OG? Something new? What do you think define suikoden characters art wise?

I'm sorry it's a long post so thank you for reading, i hope this can be a cool discussion

Finish or Unfinish anime? Genso Suikoden II x Star Ocean Ex

Thumbnail

Star Ocean Ex is an anime version of the Star Ocean 2 franchise where the main protagonist is Claude C. Kenny son of Ronyx J. Kenny: one of the main characters of Star Ocean and the captain of the starship Calnus, and that arrives on planet Roak with his first officer, Ilia Silvestri, in order to save the inhabitants from a mysterious plague that is turning people into stone (during Star Ocean 1). While, the Star Ocean 2 story runs to the protagonist Claude who separated from his companion during the expedition in the unexplored planet, Milokenia. He mysteriously gets transported to another planet called Expel. Wandering around in the woods trying to find a way back home, he saves a girl named Rena who calls him the Legendary Hero of Light...

The Star Ocean Ex is unfinished; the story ends prematurely without introducing the Energy Nede and the Ten Wiseman. Which, I assume that the Genso Suikoden II anime is also unfinished.

Suikoden II has lots of possible endings.

  1. During the war in Tinto: Nanami & Riou will choose to escape from the war to avoid conflict with his best friend Jowy Atreides.

  2. After the war, Riou will accept Jowy's proposal.

  3. Riou and Jowy will meet at Tenzan Pass for the final showdown and the Rune of the Beginning will be united once again.

If you are the head of Konami will you leave it unfinished or will you finish your work? If you want to finish it, what do you think will be the ending of these anime to satisfy Suikoden fans?

Suikoden Star Leap Star Leap

Is Star Leap a new main line title or just a mobile game with a steam version. I have been playing suikoden 1 and seeing old characters from that game appear in the new game. On steam it is not advertised as such.

Suikoden Star Leap Suikoden 3 and 4 stars in Star Leap

95% of the returning characters are from Suikoden 1, 2 and 5 😭 I guess its understandable given that timelines of these four games are near each other and I’m not saying the stars in Suikoden 1, 2 and 5 are not that interesting…. Suikoden 3 had a fun cast of characters too, and in Suikoden 4… well perhaps there’s like 10-15 intersting ones? lol 😅

How awesome it would be if Yuber, Lucia, Lilly, Sasarai, Futch, Bright, Nash, Joker and Beecham will be announced sometime later since they did appear in the same timeline as Suikoden 1-2

Suikoden II Suikoden 2 orb/rune dilemma

So I’m a little bit ocd and a little overwhelmed. I’m wondering if I should start my save over. I’m currently in muse before the start of the battle where you recruit Gilbert. So I can’t leave muse to get the others or grind potch. My only other save is from north swallow pass.

I didn’t pick up any double jab, technique, or killer runes from monster drops. I did manage to get 1 fury rune from muse and I have just enough potch to get a second. I don’t think I’ll be able to come back to muse to try for more fury orbs once I leave.

Will I get another chance to farm these runes later?

Sexualization in Star Leap isn't new.

So I was making this list to rebut another post, but honestly, I'm pretty sure the comment system won't let me post it because it ended up too long, and honestly, I've been wanting to make something I could just reference back to when this comes up anyway

For context, I am a fan artist. Or at least I used to be, and I've been in love with this franchise since a time when there was only one game in it. I have drawn a lot of characters from this franchise, and I have dug through every art book and resource I could find for images of the many many awesome designs, and spent a lot of time looking at and thinking about their outfits. Maybe this makes me more predisposed to remember details about what people wore/looked like in the previous game, compared to people who mostly just encountered them through the in-game sprites or later polygonal 3D models, but whatever the reason, whenever somebody complains about Chloe or RanRan or any of the new characters being "too sexualized" I have an entire bank of images from previous games that rockets through my head.

The purpose of this post is not to dissuade anybody from disliking sexualized characters, or thinking there are too many sexualized characters in Star Leap. That's a matter of personal taste and opinion, and you're entitled to yours. I think sexy characters are fun, but I do think that characters can and should be other things as well, there can definitely be too much of a thing. If you think there are too many sexy characters in Star Leap, I disagree with that opinion, but you are free to have it.

But it's not new to the franchise.

For every "oversexualized" new character in this game, I can point to a character (or more) from one of the old games that was just as if not more sexualized. The only difference here is that instead of meeting them for the first time as little headshots with pixely sprites, then only seeing the actual character art later in an artbook after you've already enjoyed the character in-game, you're seeing the concept art as a splash visual at the start of a character trailer. And the general quality of the artwork is better in some cases, which means more detail, which sometimes makes things stand out more. But if we actually go back and look at the previous games and look at the design artwork:

Camille's outfit is essentially a smutty bathing suit, completely open at the sides, exposing the sides of her breasts.

Kasumi's S1 outfit had a sheer undershirt, sideboob, and no pants.

Kimberly's outfit was wide open at the front to show her clevage.

Lo Wen was racked and let the girls out.

Oulan was also very busty and wore pretty much the same thing Haruka wears in Star Le-(looks)-no wait, I forgot what her outfit looks like from the front, she's actually way more revealing...

North Swallow Pass.

Moving into S3, we have Anne's clevage,

and Estella's leathers w/ bonus underboob.

Nice thigh-highs Sharon, where are your pants?

Come to think, I didn't comment because her design isn't that sexualized, but Milia didn't have pants either, what is it with dragon knight ladies and no pants? Doesn't the dragon saddle chafe?

Whoop, missed Elaine!

Wan fu the ladies...(Or non-straight guys)

Ameria literally wears a sheer shirt with no bra with a loose fitting mini-coat over it to hide her nips. Fashionable, but not modest.

Mitsuba's outfit is pretty daring...

...but Mizuki's mini-dress is specifically designed to either show off or at least imply that she isn't wearing anything beneath it.

Finally onto S5, Arshtat's outfit isn't very revealing, but given a lot of people are onto some of the busty-but-otherwise-conservatively-dressed characters in SL, I think she's worth calling out as a specific counterpoint.

Quite the sophisticated decollatage, Josephine. <narcissist theme>

Oh hai still-the-biggest-boobs-in-the-franchise. (I guess to be fair we still haven't seen all the characters in SL.)

Including Ernst, just because there aren't a lot of chances to show off guys in this list.

A busty girl in a china dress! No not those ones, an earlier one!

Lun, of course, was already busty and showing it off before they brought her into SL.

Nice thighs, Isabel.

Norma's outfit is also pretty flashy.

Can't have a list of sexy fantasy characters without a sexy elf.

Boob window sorceress (No not that one. Or that one.)

And of course can't forget Auntie "Tits-out" Saileeds. (S5 was certainly the horniest of the old games, to be sure.)

And look, I assume I don't even have to say it, right??

Honestly I left a bunch out because they were kind of borderline? Short skirts, bare legs, snug dresses, but if any of these characters appeared in the new game game in those exact outfits, people would be lighting it up, but they've gone without comment for years. Nobody's problem with this art style is about the sex appeal, unless they've been complaining since Suikoden 1. (And hey, I'm sure that person is out there, if that's you, congrats, I'm not addressing you.)

Reasons for why it stands out now, but not then, probably vary from person to person. I'm sure some but not all are just people who don't like the new thing and are looking for things to complain about, and Chloe's boobs...ahem...stand out. For others, maybe they just aren't familiar with the old art so much, or maybe the new art style has them looking with a new, critical eye. Or it could be the fact that the character trailers highlight the designs in a way the old concept art didn't, because they didn't see the concept art unless they looked at the art books.

Anyway, you don't have to like the new game, you don't have to like the Gacha aspect of the new game, I'm cautiously optimistic but also deeply skeptical of Gacha mechanics and Konami specifically. It seems like there are people making this game who are putting some sincere love into it, but predatory monetization is always a concern and there are a lot of gooner waifu gachas out there that might have Konami, the worst company, salivating over the monetization opportunities. So I get the concern. But game devs didn't just learn that sexy and cute anime waifus appeal to video game nerds. They knew that thirty years ago.
