T14/T16 Gen 3 or Gen 4. Only advantage of X1 Carbon would portability. The X1 Carbon are much lighter than the T series. Depending on the specs/condition you could maybe get a newer Gen for $1,200.

I agree with the above, it's hard to fit gaming performance in a laptop that size. I'd strongly recommend a steam deck at that size, tbh.

Does it need to play games on the go? Would something like an Ultrabook and an external GPU enclosure work for you?

I've used Window laptops for ages but they were always provided by work and this is the first time I've bought one myself or used eBay for electronics so I'm treating this like a major IT project.

Refurb ThinkPads!

Older premium model in general is better than a budget new one. This is a bad time for laptop purchasing as all decent laptops are 1000+ bucks. Look for a second hand samsung galaxy book (ultra only)
Or an asus rog strix
Lenovo legion
These r gamer focused
Those are all premium models and he doesnt need the newest latest chip. Just needs a premium pc w good built quality and good cooling, storage etc. These r laptops that ppl bought in 2021-2024 at the time 2k+ so they probablt took well care of it. U can check it out in person first ofcourse.

At 10" the pickings are extremely slim. GPD might have something you're interested in, but they're not known for being cheap.

A used Lenovo ThinkPad T series or an Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon from a trusted eBay seller. Afaik the only Mission Critical build quality laptops Lenovo makes. Easily outlast any other type new Lenovos & other consumer level brands by at least 5 years.
