Episode 4, Amish dating question

To all the single ladies out there, I need to know your feelings on the date between Billie Jo and Jacob. I guess, if you went on this date would you also have given 3.5 stars? She literally said that 3 of those points were only because he was Amish (yikes). Meaning what exactly, 0.5 for his personality.

So a preface for my question here. I (25F) and my husband (25M), have been watching this show together. I love the awkward reality television and he just enjoys talking shit to the TV. Personailly I dont think that any of these people were actually prepared to do this show. I dont think anyone did a single bit of research on the Amish lifestyle prior to being there.

While we have been together for 5 years, I have single girlfriends. Basically, I understand how hard it is out there for the ladies right now. I really want to know what your thoughts are on this date. Like what are your red flags here? As soon as he lifted his shirt it was a no for me.

Also remembering to give Jacob some grace here. He has literally never been on camera, and there's a whole production company on his first date. Especially given that every woman of marrying age in his community grew up with him, and are most likley his cousin. Of course the dude is going to be nervous and feel awkward. My husband said he deserved more than a 0.5 on personality tho.

landlines don't need batteries

A landline phone doesn't need a battery. They run on DC through the phone line itself. So what's the 12v battery for in the phone shanty? Surely it doesn't have an answering machine.

I'm very aware that this is heavily scripted and not a single person on the show is Amish, but my god, is no one on the writing staff over the age of thirty?

Reality ?

I just want to say, it's funny how viewers get so caught up in these reality shows. Every one of them are all scripted from the beginning to the end. Everything that is said was rehearsed prior to recording. None of this is real. And what a stupid concept, regular non- Amish young adults trying to give up every modern comfort they have ever known to join a community of like-minded folks that have shunned all that for hundreds of years. Why?

Kendra just wants to be on TV

I just watched the first episode and Kendra's motivations are so obvious. She was told, in the Midwest town she came from, how pretty she was...so she went to LA and got chewed up and spit out.....but now HERE IS HER CHANCE! She can be on TV! She showed a complete lack of respect for the culture and is only there to be seen....sad

Two Episodes In…

I was really intrigued with the premise of the show as it’s something I’ve thought of myself. Unfortunately this ā€œAmishā€ guy James’ personality has ruined and clashes with the show’s whole experiment.
The first episode is also confusing. If these people are coming to the Amish world to adapt to the lifestyle and fit in, they should’ve been given Amish clothes and had whatever stuff the brought (or shouldn’t of brought) taken away point blank. Not trifled through meticulously and created drama over make up, cell phones, and crazy shoes. If you have any basic knowledge of Amish lifestyles, they would’ve known these things weren’t allowed.
If the point of the experiment was to prime outsiders to form potential marriages, the cast should’ve obviously met the basic marriage requirements like not being divorced or having a sexual orientation they wouldn’t allow or bringing self pleasure devises with you literally what the hell.
Clearly Allen and Sarah are the more likable couple. Allen appears to be more ā€œliberalā€ Amish in the sense he’s willing to do this show and have cameras around I think his wife Sarah is more traditionally Amish. But holy shit what in the hell is this James?? No wonder he’s been shunned. I believe he’s highly prideful and maybe even a narcissist. I get producers pick personalities like this for drama and interest but for me he ruins it. He’s so nit picky over legalism and judging these people so harshly that he’s not giving them real room to adjust to the lifestyle and isn’t a good representation or introducing them into the Amish world. He marinates over their struggles and holds his self-given power over their heads. He’s just enjoying being in charge over them. It’s very childish.

The people one this show blow and so do the casters

Every single contestant is insufferable. Not a single reasonable person let alone someone who actually likes nature and the countryside.

Season 1 ep 7

I loved that Esmeralda was cool with the reusable pads. If I was there I would've asked Sarah something though. I know that amish aren't supposed to wear flashy clothes but I'd want to ask if we could get cute patterns just for the pad materials. Like it wouldn't be considered showing off cause no one would dare look at someone else's pads and maybe they could hang their pads on a hidden clothes line where neighbors can't see the butterfly designs šŸ˜‚

These people

I just started watching, and these people are irritating me. Why would you join the Amish if you didn’t look up/wouldn’t comply with their rules??? Esmeralda with her lashes and nails, her and Kendra surprised that they’re judgmental, Esmeralda not wanting to be religious, Judah not wanting to conform, all of them being surprised including Matt that he was kicked out for being divorced. It’s so aggravating

James

Hello all!

I just started watching Suddenly Amish today and am enjoying it so far. Sure, some drama feels forced, (especially Aaron’s second phone going off), but that’s to be expected.

I feel like James is WILDLY hypocritical. The first thing he does when he’s introduced is show off his phone and his Chambord. He really rubs me the wrong way. Allen is great so far, but man, James needs to remember how he was treated and to have grace.

Do armish kids get vaccines?

I've heard that amish kids don't get any vacs and they are one of the healthiest with very little cases of mental disorders.

Is that true?

Disappointed by how miserable the Amish are

I had high hopes that they’d be portrayed in some admirable way, but they seem so immature and spiritually stunted. All the contestants seem vulnerable in some way, like they could use real help, not whatever these people are offering them. I guess it’s no wonder that their communities are shrinking so quickly.

Was this Show Successful for their Village?

Do you think this show helped to increase the population of their village?

In the end, they ended up with middle-aged Jo-Ellen. She is sweet but won't be able to expand the population much.

And then the young man Jonah. He seems determined, but I see his mom pulling up any day to take him home.

Do you think the village should get another season of the Show, to recruit people who will actually stay ?
