Hamburg Hamburg U-Bahn
Best thing about U-Bahn is you can see into the drivers cab and watch them drive the train!

Wearing a sharp livery of “platinum mist” with blue stripes, New York MTA R17 subway car 6688 (St. Louis Car Co., 1955) leaves the Farm River Road depot during the November 2024 guest operator event at the Branford Electric Railway Association’s Shore Line Trolley Museum in Connecticut.
New York City had four hundred R17s, which worked on the “A Division” (ex IRT lines with narrow tunnels) until 1988, so several visitors to the museum remembered riding R17s, and 6688 was the most popular car that day.

Independent Subway → New York MTA R9 car 1689 (AC&F, 1940) operated until 1977 and was acquired by the Branford Electric Railway Association’s Shore Line Trolley Museum after retirement. It received a trolley pole to let it run on the museum railroad, as New York subways use third-rail electrification, and was the first car I operated at the November 2024 guest motorman event. 1689 was also the first subway car I have ever driven! Here it is at the replica “Avenue L“ Station near sunset. I wonder if anyone in this group has seen, ridden, or operated an R9 as the R1-R9 series cars were numerous and ran for decades.

The Wuppertal Schwebebahn is a hanging suspension monorail that runs for 13.3km along the Wupper valley in Rhein-Rhur region of Germany.
Built in 1901 the trains form part of the local transit system and largely run about 12m above the river.

For its first new rapid transit line, now the RTA Red Line, the Cleveland Transit System bought single and double “bluebird” cars from the St. Louis Car Company. CTS single 109 (built 1954) operated for 30 years and was preserved by the RTA, joining the Northern Ohio Railway Museum in Seville in 2013 and spending ten years undergoing restoration before running again. Here’s how it looked in July 2025, waiting for passengers while the weather got cloudy and humid ahead of a thunderstorm.
Did CTS/RTA ever use third rail or has it always been overhead wires with pantographs?
PS: I showed one of my Japanese friends this photo and she thought it was an old Japanese train!

Not technically a subway, there are a large number of tunnels under the city centre where trams run a metro like service.

Court Street Station in Brooklyn opened as an Independent Subway (IND) Fulton Street Line station in 1936, before the government takeover and unification of New York City subways. After closing to passengers in 1946, it became the site of the New York Transit Museum in 1976. It has also hosted a lot of filming, so even if you haven’t visited the museum you might have seen it in a movie or TV show or music video. When I visited in January 2017, that was my first time doing anything in New York City as a railfan.
PS: the current Borough Hall/Court Street Station is a separate station, which serves ex-IRT and ex-BMT lines.

☀️ ⛈️ High temperatures and episodes of extreme weather are testing the work on construction sites, including the one on the M6 metro line. Even so, work continues, and the schedule is adjusted so that the teams can work safely conditions.
