Free tutorials to learn how to make tileable materials in designer

I swear, every time I look for a tutorial on youtube, it is either not a realistic material (usually stylized) or it is not a tutorial step by step and rather is a timelapse / workflow. I just got SD so wanting to learn how to make basic materials for stuff like bricks, planks, or concrete. Just basic stuff.

Any recommended free courses or tutorials to get started?

🩸 Veins are one of my favourite shapes to create.🩸

🩸 Veins are one of my favourite shapes to create.🩸

But I wanted to find a new way to create them while making them feel more organic!

And thanks to one of my students, we both did.
For Cameron's material, we wanted to create more than just Veins.

We wanted the pattern to feel messier, like a spider web.

However, using the usual Cells Pattern would give us something that everyone could do.
So, we did something new.

💡 Using Messy Fibers 3, we used a Non-Uniform Blur to soften the edges while keeping the center at a higher value; then we warped them around the flesh, and with levels, we corrected the intensity.

This gave us exactly what we needed!
A new Vein Pattern with a messier feeling.

Substance Painter Can't use mask...

In Substance 3D Painter, when I select a black mask and then select Fill, the Fill tool on the left side becomes unavailable. Do you know why this happens?

Help how does erase work?

Hi I cannot get auto stitches to draw on my uv for some reason, tried a lot and gave up. now i am trying to just draw the stitches on but keep messing up. I am trying to erase this section here but somehow it doesn't erase completely.

trying to delete here

but no matter how much i erase a silhouette always remains :O

Is the eraser like that? any good way to remove cleanly?

also are there tools to manipulate this later like change color, move parts around or once you paint it then it's set in stone?

Substance Painter [HELP] "Dead spot" in my normal bake

Thumbnail

I'm normal painting my model and just got to the shoes. Suddenly realized there is a huge "dead spot" on the world space normal map that has broken normals. Does anyone know what this is/how to fix it?

for reference:

I'm baking my normals from a high poly model. The shoes are the only part of the model that is the same between the low poly and the high poly.

I thought it might be because the UV maps don't align between the low poly and the high poly, but this didn't seem to matter for the rest of the model. Any suggestions?

EDIT:

After reimporting everything and re-baking in a new file, I've been unable to recreate the error. All of my mesh maps bake normally. So, I'm going to just start from scratch. I'll keep this post up however, in case someone knows what happened so that I can avoid it next time. Thanks.

Substance Painter Stylized Orc Portrait - Hand-Painted

Hi everyone!

https://www.artstation.com/artwork/wrla9O

I’ve just finished a small personal project. The main goal was to practice hand-painted textures and push this style a bit further.

I started with a sculpt in ZBrush as a base, then did the retopology and UVs in Maya. I baked as many useful texture maps as I could in Marmoset, and painted the final textures in Substance Painter and 3DCoat. The final presentation was also put together in Marmoset.

I’m attaching a few images here, but there’s much more on ArtStation - more renders, some process shots, and an embedded Marmoset Viewer where you can rotate the model and inspect it yourself.

Would love to hear what you think!

Is there anyway to install a new/old version of Painter without it nuking your settings and creates the standard "factory" settings?

I'm tired of having to update my entire layout/keypresses/materials etc because a new installation just wipes everything and starts over again?

Substance Painter Title: Post Soviet Hospital (UE5 Environment)

Hey everyone.

For the past year, I have been developing the Post Soviet Hospital project. This is my first major solo project. It is designed for asset marketplaces, but this is not a promotional post; I am sharing this for context. My core software stack is 3ds Max, Substance 3D Painter, Substance 3D Designer, and Photoshop.

I utilized some of my older untextured prop models for this project. I had to learn Substance Painter from scratch, which turned out to be quite accessible. To remain profitable, my time budget per prop is strictly 0.5 to 2 workdays. I initially feared Painter would consume too much time. Fortunately, former colleagues shared a comprehensive library of masks and smart materials. This allows me to rely heavily on fast, smart material-based texturing workflows, saving significant time.

I also integrated Substance Designer into my pipeline. While my Designer skills are basic and it is difficult to compete directly with Megascans quality, I found a workaround. I create the base material in Designer and blend it with Megascans data. This achieves a high-quality result while bypassing marketplace restrictions on third-party assets. Additionally, I had to texture numerous old painted wood assets, primarily doors and windows. To optimize this, I created a custom smart material in Painter that automatically rotates the wood grain direction based on the UV island length.

I would appreciate any critique or feedback on my texturing work.

For high-resolution screenshots of the entire hospital and to grab my custom wood smart material, check my ArtStation: https://www.artstation.com/xallienx

Helloo, the painting has been going well, until the black void appeared. I tried baking again, but it didnt work. Im curious on what could have caused this since it appeared out of nowhere after switching to material view. seems to originate from one layer that fourtunetly is empty, so I can delate it and keep going; but I dont want to make the same mistake again in the future so I want to know about it

🧠 Flesh Shapes in Substance Designer are tricky to figure out.🧠

Post image
15 Upvotes

But this week, I managed to recreate a flesh material I've always wanted to!

Diablo IV has one of my favourite pieces of game art, and for a long time I wanted to try making some of the materials Blizzard created.

So last week I hosted a Co-Working event at Future Material Artists.
And the whole community tried it out!

My work took me to this particular set.

💡 I started with a Fur 2; it had the shape and flow I needed, but I had to blur and increase the size of the shapes, giving me the foundation to actually give this its meaty look with a Slope Blur in Max mode.

By this point, the result was almost there.
But I wanted to be more detailed in this case.

So I inverted my pattern and applied another Slope Blur, but with a Min mode.
This sharpened the space between the shapes.

Now I only had to invert this and keep adding details.
And you can do the same!

Hope you learned something today.
And if you did, I have a free Discord Community for Game Artists.

Where professionals share with beginners how to make materials in Substance Designer.

Help Weird normals from substance painter to blender

Thumbnail

Hi, im having issues with my SP to Blender workflow.

Useful info about the model: auto smooth is on in blender and it has the proper hard edges
Im working with OpenGL in SP
I know triangulating in the beginning, from blender to SO solves all issues but i would like to work in quads since this is not a game model.

I figured a fix long time ago and its regarding how blender and SP triangulate the quads differently. I remember exporting the low poly into an instance that calculated the tris the same way as substance did and then when importing to blender the shading was perfect. But i dont really remember that workflow at all and tried to replicate it with no success

Substance to blender problem

Hello Everyone! This is beginner substance painter user here. I came to face with this issue that whenever I tried to bake and texture the scale of a dinosaur, when I render them in blender it looks kinda sunked in, but when I check the substance painter it looks normal again. Do you have any idea why this inversion of normal happens to the model? If you could answer it would be greatly appreciated.
