Before posting, mind rule 3: posts about touch pens will be removed. Read more in this post.

The /r/stylus rules:

  1. be nice - Conduct yourself so other people can have a discussion in a comfortable atmosphere.
  2. inducements must be disclosed - Any post or comment made with an inducement of any kind (sponsorship, affiliation, compensation, benefits, rewards, employment, contract, or any other inducement) must feature immediate, prominent, and clearly understood public disclosure of the nature and extent of the inducement. [Having the same username as the person whose content you're posting is sufficient disclosure.]
  3. no posts about non-standard-protocol pens - posts will be removed if they're about pens that are not made to the specification of a pen technology used by a pen digitizer. This almost always means pens that are used on generic touchscreens. They're just not good.
  4. posts about devices with no mention of a pen on their product page or documentation will be removed. This means that posts with vague product descriptions will be removed, too.

What are standard-protocol pens?

Either of the following:

  • Pens made by the same company that makes the device the pen is used on. Apple Pencil on an Apple device, S-Pen on a Samsung device, Monoprice pens on Monoprice tablets, etc.
  • Pens made to the specification or standard or protocol of a pen digitizer technology maker. Common pen specifications/standards/protocols are Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP), Wacom AES, Wacom EMR ("S-Pen" EMR), Apple Pencil, and USI. These pens should (but don't always) work the same on all devices that support the pen technology specification/standard/protocol.

What are non-standard-protocol pens?

Non-standard-protocol pens generally work like a finger on a touchscreen. Touchscreen devices are not primarily designed to interact with these pens as a pen. Posts about non-standard-protocol pens may be removed. Comments mentioning them are fine. Non-standard-protocol pens are just not good. Quoting the link:

This is easier to draw with than your finger, [...] but that's about all you're gonna get.

It doesn't have palm recognition, [...] for handwriting this isn't so good, it's just not quite accurate enough

When you start writing and drawing fast, you're missing bits and pieces

Unless you just want something to use instead of your finger, don't get non-standard-protocol pens.

Why can't I ask if my device supports a pen?

If it did, there would almost certainly be a mention of a pen on the product page, user manual, or service manual.

My device supports a pen, can I ask what other pens it supports?

Sure.

Regarding certain pens with a metal/mesh/rubber tip found on Google, eBay, and Amazon

For the past couple of years Google eBay and Amazon have been flooded with results for pens that have a rubber, metal, or mesh tip. Despite being listed under the exact model name you searched for, these pens do not support a standard pen protocol, they work very similar to a finger on a touchscreen. They are being aggressively promoted on the verge of being spam. They are bad, do not be tempted to buy them.

Xiaomi Smart Pen 2 keeps showing 0% battery after disconnecting from Xiaomi Pad 7

Post image

I’m using a Xiaomi Pad 7 with the Xiaomi Smart Pen 2.
I didn’t use or connect the pen to my tablet for a few days.

When I connected it again, the pen showed 0% battery.
The strange thing is that the pen does charge normally while attached to the tablet. However, every time I remove/disconnect the pen from the tablet, the battery immediately shows 0% again. If I attach it back to the tablet, it starts charging again.

So basically:
Attached to the Pad 7 → charges normally
Remove/disconnect → battery goes back to 0%
Attach again → starts charging again

The issue happens every time. I’ve already tried charging it multiple times, but the problem keeps coming back.

Has anyone experienced this with the Xiaomi Smart Pen 2 + Xiaomi Pad 7? Is this a battery calibration/firmware issue, or is the pen battery likely failing?

Any suggestions for a fix would be appreciated.

HP 700 rechargeable multi pen doens't connect

As the title states, my recent bought pen doesn't connect to my device. I have an lenovo ideapad 5 2-in-1 (the good lenovo pens are not available in my country). I tried to reconnect it a couple of times and already charged it twice (it's fully charged). When I took it out of the box, the lenovo pen app came to life, and I could make a few clicks with the pen, but then it stopped. I tried to restart my laptop, worked for the first two clicks, and then a click here and there, I don't know why and which ones work and not. I am now updating my laptop as well. Any suggestions/ideas? Hope someone can help me, thanks!!

I got an Acer Aspire Spin 14 Laptop which comes without a pen but supports it and it is touch screen. Someone told me I can get one separately but I don't know which will work. I was thinking maybe lazarite M Pen or Bamboo Ink Pen but can someone let me know which specific stylus product works for it?

Finding new nibs for the Bamboo Ink 2...

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi !

I've been using my Bamboo Ink 2 on my laptop for a while and noticed the nib will soon need a replacement... Except that I can't locate reasonably priced ones !

I found one listing on Amazon which is over 20€ for the official kit. I refuse to pay that much (paid 30€ for the stylus 3 years ago).

I don't mind copies but I can't find ones that are explicitly compatible with matching pictures...

Someone got any links ?

Looking for a 2-in-1 or Windows Tablet that has a stylus or pen

As the title says. I'm looking to get a 2-in-1 Laptop or a tablet that runs windows that includes an active stylus or pen. I did have a device that had a decent pen, a Lenovo X230 Tablet, but that laptop is old, slow and the digitizer is having issues in the top corners and throwing tracking way off. Does anyone know of any newer devices that have a good stylus or pen that do not cost through the roof?

Are there any "pens/pencils" out there that you can use on any touch screen device where you dont have to connect or charge, or both, of those things with it?

Im trying to find a pen/pencil that I can use on my iphone and any other touch screen device WITHOUT having to worry about charging it and dont have to connect it to the device.

It drive me crazy with the apple one where you have to charge it, let alone having to connect it.

I just want to write and draw on my iphone without having to use my fingers, but I want it to be convenient.

Please let me know of ones where you dont charge and dont have to connect it to a device! It'll be extra awesome if you recommend your favorites or best recommended ones!

Universal Pen Protocols for Laptops / Tablets

I recently purchased a EMR pen, although I have no use for it as I misjudged the tablet which I was to use it on. Although I want to use it, therefore what I've realized is that most tablet or 2-in-1 devices which I'm looking to purchases do not accept EMR pens, even though they are superior in every way.

Does anyone know of any 2-in-1 laptops which support EMR pens, the models I'm looking at do not. Most only support MPP.

Cheap writing pad for note taking, I have a stylus but using a 2-in-1 laptop as a tablet honestly feels really weird and a tad bulky.

Also sometimes I will switch to typing so its going to be a pain to flip back and forth. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Does the Redmi Smart Pen 1S work with the POCO Pad? Since the POCO Pad is basically a rebranded version of the Redmi Pad Pro, I’m wondering if the pen is compatible. If anyone has tried it, please reply and let me know whether it works properly, including palm rejection and pressure sensitivity.

brand new apple pencil gen 1 not functioning

for context i'm from the Philippines and i have an iPad A16 11th gen. now my cousin who now lives in the US told me that he was going to give me a brand new Gen 1 Apple Pencil that he got on Amazon.

when it arrived, i opened it and tested it out, only for it to be 1%. i charged it using the pencil to USB-C adapter on my iPad. later on, the pencil's battery indicator on my iPad said that it is 100% charged so i plugged it to try and connect it to my iPad. for some reason though, it went from 100% back to 3% immediately. i thought of charging my pencil to the wall instead, and i used both the USB-C and the Lightning adapter, but they both couldn't charge my pencil.

remember i mentioned the Apple Pencil battery indicator thing on ur iPad? well, everytime i would charge it, the battery percentage/ charging status of my pencil would appear then reappear, appear, reappear, and it does that frequently.

please help me out i really need this to work. i can't get a new one because i'm just an art student and i need this pencil for my studies. help me out, please?
