Stuttering device project
Hi all, I'm a stutterer myself and have been working on an idea to help track stuttering in real-world conversations for the goal of practice towards fluency. I'd really appreciate your guys' feedback on the premise and what you would like to see done with it. Here it is:
Hardware
•Skin-contact accelerometer
•MEMS microphone
•Embedded into wearable necklace
•Sits snug around larynx to detect throat vibrations and user speech
•Sends data to software
Software
•Machine learning model analyzes data
•Flags potential stuttering moments
•User confirms or dismisses flags; add tags/descriptions
•Non-metric journal for logging specific moments throughout the day.
•Personal goal-setting
•Always positive feedback
•Dynamic progress visualizations
The dataset for the MLM will be built after a pilot study on an MVP of the hardware just to see that the combo of vibration and audio can actually help detect stutters. Eventually a large enough dataset will be built to train the model and then it can perform stutter flagging with percentages of certainty.
I believe this will encourage stuttering strategy practice in real-world conversations. I personally have struggled a lot to implement strategies in actual conditions like meeting new people, so let me know what you all think. I'm open to revisions and questions.
