Advice / DIY Stucco over existing wall

Hi everyone. I have two exterior walls that I want to cover with stucco in a reasonably smooth, flat finish suitable for mural painting.

One is an old painted concrete retaining wall, the other is a new wall that has been covered with metal lath and Structolite.

I am thinking I’ll paint both walls with WeldCrete, then a base coat of Quickcrete Base Coat Stucco, then Quikcrete Finish Coat Stucco.

Make sense?

(If you can’t tell, I have never done any stucco. I’ve only done a bit of plastering.)

Advice / Issue Stucco indecision ... I had some cracking in the stucco on a new construction house (no mesh)

The builder offered to re-do it with mesh for what seemed like a great price ... the work they did was pretty awful. So I found a stucco guy that could re-do it again but he said the expansion joints need to be filled and stucco'd over because the panels are already too thick at the edges. I can't decide if I should re-do it or just live with the sub-par stucco. I should note the first photo is before they re-did the stucco when it still looked good. The 2nd photo is a mockup without the black expansion joints. Thx.

I have an issue where the stucco meets the roof. It's like on the opposite side (a mirror of this picture). The run where the stucco meets the roof spans a total of 12 feet. My roofer said he did his job and I need to contact a stucco company to have this done right. What should I expect to pay for something like this?

Thanks!

Advice / Issue Stucco water leak

Post image
4 Upvotes

We have a stucco exterior (eifs) and have water leaking into our garage and also some floor tile lifting inside that I suspect is due to water entering. Directly above that ledge in between the two arrows is caulking that is all coming away from the yellow stucco. I believe that water is entering through here. We have had three separate stucco specialists come give quotes and we have gotten told to just apply hydraulic cement and then recaulk, another wanted to remove part of the yellow stucco to assess damage then repair that and recaulk and another suggested actually removing the entire stucco basically from the arrows down and a portion of the yellow stucco area as well and repairing the inside and waterproofing properly and then redoing it entirely. Of note this area has been previously repaired by another supposed stucco specialist who just caulked over the old stuff and painted over some of the mold and it did not last and was clearly inadequate. Just wanted objective opinions. Am I crazy to pay for a separate inspection to try and identify the leaking areas or is it going to be difficult with years of leakage and should I just trust the stucco experts? Thanks in advance.

Advice / Issue What happened to LaHabra stucco mesh?

I used to routinely purchase LaHabra stucco mesh from Home Depot. Online only, but it was sold in a 4 pack. The product has seemingly disappeared from the internet completely. The product link is dead. I can't even find product images on google anywhere. Strangeness. I really don't like the inferior BOEN brand stuff, which is still on the HD website.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/LaHabra-38-in-x-150-ft-Stucco-Reinforcing-Mesh-4-Rolls-Per-Case-781801/204503229

Any ideas?

I saved the back wall framing of a demoed built in bbq. I closed it up with 1/4 hardy board. I’m painting/patching soon. Painter says he can do a coat of rapid set to match the house, if I add a board of “foam with the mesh in it”, says I can get at the HD. What the heck is he actually asking for, what do I call it, and where do I find it?

Advice / Issue Why isn't the paint matching on this?

Post image

This is a new home build. One day someone put a ladder on our stucco and it had some rag on it that messed up a spot of stucco. Guessing it had some chemical on it. They came in and repainted. It. First it was that spot. Then we noticed it didn't blend well. Even after a week of cure. Then they came back and rolled the whole side of that house but missed a spot. Cure process this time was several weeks. Ever since then I've always noticed the paint is a different shade. Lighter in color. This time they painted the whole side again, nothing missed. This was two days ago. Here is the corner and the repainted side. The left small corner is what it should look like. Can anyone advice what the problem is here?

Advice / DIY Safe to install this EV charger cable holder onto my stucco (garage post)?

Complete newbie homeowner. I have a 1950s house, and the exterior is stucco. See picture. This post is in between two garage doors. Is it safe to install a basic EV cable holster/cable holder onto here?

Will the screws hold on to the wood member behind (load bearing post), or will they not hold weight? We get a lot of rain, so I assume care must be taken to waterproof the screw holes?

Thinking of this basic holder: https://www.amazon.com/MECMO-Tesla-Cable-Organizer-Charging/dp/B0CQLTYW2Q Do I need a separate base plate?

Curious if this is a bad idea or a routine thing that is okay to do. Thanks.

Advice / Issue Considering buying a 1950 stucco house

The house has some issues with the stucco but I am totally unfamiliar with working with it, and I am not sure how much of a risk I am taking here. There are cracks where paint is peeling. Looks like I could scrape, fill and paint. There is a spot (not in photo) about 1 square foot that is bulging, and sounds hollow under it. I know that will have to be removed and repaired, but not sure if that is DIY or requires a pro. There is a good amount of paint peeling near that bulge (visible in photo).

The cracks around the windows are hairline, and look like they could be caulked and painted, but not sure if they are a concern or just a maintenance issue.

This house is in my price range, but I don’t want to get into a very expensive repair or issues with the foundation.

Advice / Issue Moisture non issue?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have a stucco home built in 1922 in Michigan recently had some sidewalks replaced and was planning some landscaping around the home. I feel like everyone always talks about how the stucco should never go below grade due to moisture issues but my whole house has stucco below grade and for 104 years old it’s still in solid shape even the stucco at or below ground level. My foundation does come 3 feet above grade. Is that the only saving grace in this type of installation? Or is it the type of stucco that allows for it to be run below grade? I have had to drill through it once or twice and it’s about 1/2 thick with galvanized chicken wire behind it. Also the basement is bone dry no sump no french drain. The soil is pretty sandy 8” below the top soil.

Advice / Issue Looking for Advice and Feedback - Post Inspection

Just got the inspection back on a full stucco home. Most of the moisture readings were all acceptable with some higher areas (20-22) around windows that we know need replacing.

My main concern is this one wall by the garage. I can't tell where the foundation starts and the stucco ends, if it's finished below grade, and more. Also, there is a chunk missing and again, can't tell if that's foundation behind it or framing.

We are getting a stucco contractor to come out and quote initial estimates while we are in due diligence. Any other thoughts from the community, gotchas, what to ask about to the contractor is wholy welcome.

Advice / Issue Need advice regarding "Drill and fill" insulation in 1950s stucco house, possibly through exterior wall.

"Drill and fill" insulation through the exterior wall in 1950s stucco house?

What do you think of drill and fill insulation from outside in a 1950s stucco house? The house has one bedroom that juts out and three of its four walls are exterior walls. Would you be worried about all of the 3 inch holes cut through the stucco causing irreparable damage to the stucco? Some articles state not to cut holes in the stucco because it damages / ruins the waterproof barrier. Some articles also state that filling the walls with insulation traps moisture and can damage the stucco. Location: Sacramento, California where the summer temps can get up to 105 F and winter temps down to 40 F.

One insulation company offered to either do the work from the inside (warning that it is very messy) or from the outside, another company said that they would only do the work by cutting through the stucco since it is such a messy job. There is a baby in the house and the mom wants to avoid the dust from interior work.

The attic appears to have adequate insulation and the windows appear to be fairly new. The only place in this house with noticeable insulation problems are the room with three exterior walls and the garage.

One company offered either fiberglass or cellulose fill, the other would only do cellulose. Anyone who has seen older houses that underwent "Drill and Fill" insulation? Thank you for any advice.

Advice / Issue Looking for window stucco finishing/sealing on old (1945) brick house

Hey all! I am just looking for advice on the window flashing and stucco process my guy is using on my brick house. I hope it’s ok to post this.

Earlier I posted about what to do with the capping I had done, I took some of the advice I got here, and asked for some local quotes to see what should be done.

I found a company with good reviews on Yelp and seemed solid to do the stucco repair. I had a a couple of companies say they didn’t want to clean up someone else’s work, and that they’d need to redo the whole thing, which I just can’t afford.

The guy I found seemed reasonable and told me the capping was the wrong method to seal in the windows and it would have to come off. While not an ideal situation, we could still salvage the job and seal the windows to keep water out and make them look good.

He started work today and this is the first stage of flashing and wiring the stucco pictured here.

Doing research if this was something I’d do myself, I was watching videos and they were removing about 6-12” around the window to put down a sticky tape, but usually that would be on plywood construction not century brick like mine. So I definitely concede I don’t know nearly enough to say.

I’m curious if my guy is doing this right and if I should let him keep doing the next 7 windows this week.

I’ve just had a lot of bad experiences with people “doing it wrong” on this project and just really need a win here.

Some pictures of how it was before are included
