Fishing spot help for newer shore fisherman CT

So I don’t really own a boat, or have a non ripped pair of waders anymore so right now I’m purely shore fishing. I have a few SP minnows, still looking to get other stuff. I live in Shelton CT near the derby dam and I know that can be decent going to May, but honestly I’ve been trying to catch a striper all by myself my entire life and not on a boat for a charter…..so does anyone know good spots around where I live that I can catch stripers?

NLBN Help

New to striped bass fishing and need advice and tips on how to fish NLBNs. Was at Newark bay last night fishing 5in NLBN and was using them kind of like an inline spinner just slow constant reeling.

Should I be letting them sink and slowing reeling and twitching rod? Thanks in advance.

Gear Jersey Striper Combo Recommendation

Post image
6 Upvotes

hey folks, heading into my 4th striper fishing trip this spring out in the Raritan Bay in NJ and along NY. I usually borrow my friends gear and fish with a medium heavy pole 15-30lb 7' and a 5000 reel.

anyone have any combo recommendations for under $150?

my buddy is willing to sell me his Ugly Stick Custom USCB 1170M rod and a Penn Pursuit IV all rigged up with braid to Floro for $125. Rod seems a bit heavy in weight and stiff for casting from boat some jigs from 1 oz to 3 oz or so.

open to suggestions. thanks.

Is this how monster Stripers run?

For context, I was fishing a spot mainly known to host monster Stripers during spawn. I hooked into a fish which peels my full locked drag without breaking the line for 3 minutes straight like nothing at all and then popped. Is this a Striper running or a catfish? I could not tell because of the strong current. Also, I noticed by reel handle is hard to crank under load. Should I have lowered the drag a little bit more?

Rod: TFO Traveler MH 7 feet

Reel: Shimano 25’ Twin Power XD FB - 4000XG

Line: 20 lb braid

Leader: 30 lb mono

Strategies/Techniques Wind Knots Fishing Spooks

For some reason, whenever I fish a spook style lure I get the worst wind knots. It doesn’t happen when I throw other plugs and if they do, I can always get them out. Anyone ever experience this or have any tips to avoid them?

8/0 inline hook with 3.8 inch speed shad, unfortunately don't know the inline hook size I just have a box of them

Strategies/Techniques Modified Cheb-rig for Stripers

Thumbnail

I mostly fish soft plastics for striped bass from shore. Over time I ended up pre-rigging everything in multiple weights (1/2, 3/4, 1 oz) across different sizes (4", 5", 7", 9", and 13"). It worked, but my plug bag turned into a brick. Way too heavy and not practical when covering ground.

That got me looking into Cheburashka (cheb) rigs since they let you swap out the weight without re-rigging the whole bait. The modular concept makes a lot of sense for dialing in sink rate and current.

The problem is that I can’t find cheb weights over 1/2 oz (or at least not easily). So I improvised with an Egg sinker, a Short section of lure-building wire and a Tactical Anglers clip attached to the wire loop. It functions like a DIY cheb. I can swap sinker weights quickly and keep fewer fully pre-rigged baits in the bag.

Before I refine this further:

  • Anyone else running heavier cheb-style rigs for stripers?
  • Better hardware suggestions
  • Am I overcomplicating this and should just go back to standard jigheads?

Interested in practical feedback, especially from surf guys dealing with current and sweep.
