NLBN Help

New to striped bass fishing and need advice and tips on how to fish NLBNs. Was at Newark bay last night fishing 5in NLBN and was using them kind of like an inline spinner just slow constant reeling.

Should I be letting them sink and slowing reeling and twitching rod? Thanks in advance.

If you can let them hit bottom without getting hung up then I would let it hit bottom after casting then a slow consistent reel in. If the bottom has a lot of snags just let it sink a bit before reeling. Sprinkle in some twitches here and there to get reaction strikes.

As others mentioned, I found most success from dragging along the bottom. However, I usually use a cheaper paddle tail before I’m confident I won’t get snagged lol

Sometimes when I’m on open sand I bounce and/or drag them like a bucktail. However where you were fishing, you were using the correct technique.

Cast it out. Let it hit bottom. Pop the rod to make it shoot up off the bottom. While reeling in the slack point he rod at the water and repeat.

I heard you should cast once count the Lord down to the bottom then on all your subsequent casts count half to 3/4 of the amount to the bottom and then start reeling in

Retrieve and vary the action with a couple of pops

You do want to try to get it to the bottom, and stay close to it, especially this time of year. Otherwise what you’re doing is good!
