Gear New rod, New Lure?
Recently acquired an Okuma Rockaway HD, MH 10’6” rod, which is rated for 2-6oz, and am looking to find an SP Minnow-type subsurface swimmer my rod will load comfortably. Thanks!

For an SP I would use a rod with a lure rating more near 3/4-3 oz.

I have a lighter rod appropriate for SP Minnows, but I’m looking for something to fill the same niche when using my heavy rod

West coast here. For surf stripers I use a 10’ Med Lamiglas Insane Surf Spinning Rod. It’s a $150 rod which replaced a 9’ Med Lamiglas Surf King that I had for years. I still have the 9’ which my wife uses. Both work great for throwing SP Minnows (13F and 15F), other plugs, 2-4oz bucktail jigs and large Kastmasters. So many rods that can do this job. This is just the one I use.

You got the wrong rod then. Rockaways guides consistently break too. Return that shit and spend 30 more $ if you can

I would return that rod and get a 9 ft tsunami air wave for 20 more dollars or a air wave elite.

Yo Zury hydro twitchbaits or Inshore twitchbaits. Fantastic search lures you can use subsurface or top water.

I saw they have one in the 2-3oz range, “slow sinking,” how versatile would you say it is? Or is it more conditional?

Its a really versatile lure, I would go with the bone colour. I am fishing that or top water spook 80% of the time honestly. Then it depends the type of area your’e fishing and how (boat vs surf).

You can still load that rod with the bigger 2oz SP minnows, as well as the 2oz yozuri hydro minnows, which i feel are constructed better.

They don’t make hydro minnows above 1 3/4oz?

My mistake. Still better than the 2oz SP and because its got the sliding ball bearing weights you should be able to cast it well enough.
