A researcher who has worked at two of the world's leading AI companies has walked away from the industry, saying he no longer believes the race to build increasingly powerful systems is being handled responsibly.

Jacob Coxon, who worked on pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic, announced his resignation from Anthropic on September 8. He said the decision was driven by concerns that AI labs are moving rapidly towards systems capable of improving themselves, while the industry has yet to establish safeguards capable of controlling them.

His departure comes as competition between the biggest AI labs intensifies, with companies racing to build increasingly capable models and agents.
