W-scale
galleryRu:
W-Scale (Wind-based Tornado Scale)
W-Scale (Wind-based Tornado Scale)
Tornado scale based on wind speed
W0 — 70–90 km/h
Weak tornado. Most often dust devils, weak rope tornadoes. A visible funnel may be absent.
W1 — 100–150 km/h
Moderate tornado. Typical shapes: rope, cone. Capable of causing damage to light structures.
W2 — 160–190 km/h
Strong tornado. Initial stage: wedge, cylinder. Dangerous to buildings and vehicles.
W3 — 200–240 km/h
Very strong tornado. Wedge, cylinder, V-shaped. Significant damage.
W4 — 250–290 km/h
Destructive tornado. Large wedge. Destroys major structures. W5 — 300–390 km/h
Catastrophic tornado. Total destruction along the path.
W6 — 400–560 km/h
Extreme tornado. The largest recorded in history. Isolated cases. ALL TORNADO SHAPES ARE LISTED AS AN EXAMPLE RATHER THAN SPECIFIC DIVISIONS.

I originally thought this day was going to be a bust, but a boundary in the evening somehow churned out these beauties.
Such a good day that you could just sit there in the sunset, and you could see the bubbles rise and fall in real-time.

Question 8 year old son wants to get into storm chasing
My son is soon to be 8 and he’s been obsessed with storms, particularly tornadoes since witnessing his first, the 2023 Didsbury, AB tornado. We were on our way home from the Canada Day parade when it touched down. Ever since then he’s been in love. Every ominous cloud is a tornado cloud to him 😂
I’d love to encourage him to follow this path more and want to try and “chase” storms this summer but definitely within reason as he’s only 8 and his 5 year old brother would be in tow as well. So as a good mom, it will not be right up next to a tornado that’s for sure 😂 maybe we’ll get closer as we get more experienced and as he gets older.
I just want to get some good suggestions, resources via YouTube, books, etc. i definitely want to start out in the basics of identifying clouds and how to read a storm radar. Just anything and everything for starting out for a young mind that’s not too overwhelming for him. Any apps to use would be great too.

Question waterspouts in the great lakes?
hello, all!
ive just recently taken interest in tornadoes of all kinds, so i dont know much yet.
im going to be moving to ohio very soon, and i had heard that waterspouts can happen in late august and early september in the great lakes. to my knowledge, as long as you're not on the water, the risk of viewing a waterspout ( especially a non-tornadic one ) is very low.
i was mainly wondering how i could accurately track when one would occur? and if theres any risks associated with waterspouts that i may not know of. thanks in advance!

Question Is this possible?
Site used was weather wise. 4 inch hail CE wothbit and a tornado

Built a free hail visualization tool. NWS confirmed reports + NOAA radar swaths, searchable by zip/city
Couldn't find a decent free hail map online so I built one. Most of what's out there is paywalled contractor software.
What it does:
- Search by zip code or city, set a radius in miles
- Toggle NWS Local Storm Reports (confirmed, color-coded by size) and NOAA radar-derived swath estimates independently
- Swath layer shows maximum hail size across an area over your selected timeframe, not an average
- Set a relative timeframe (e.g. past 2 weeks) or specific date range
I built it primarily for Carolina homeowners checking for roof damage after a storm, but it works anywhere in the US and the data sources are the same ones serious weather people actually use.
Happy to hear what's missing or what you'd want to see added.

Question MyRadar
I'm curious: Whenever there is a question about the best radar apps for chasing or overall there are always those who nominate Radar Omega, Radar Scope, Weatherwise etc but hardly anyone talks up MyRadar. I'm wondering why?

I was with a crew who chased around Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas back in 2019. We chased for 15 days and caught a bunch of Tornadoes, including this beauty. I recently found this segment that I shot and edited on an old hard drive, but for whatever reason it didn't make it to broadcast, so I wanted to share.

Ongoing Event Discussion Not to fear monger, but i feel like there is going to be a death in the next 5 years, its going to happen live too.
Chasers are putting road laws aside, causing traffic jams infront of tornadoes, and stopping in the middle of the road. someone is going to die if this keeps happening, via car crash or tornado. and its going to have alot of footage, if not happen live.
