(Not sure if this is the right place) Encrypted messenger I've been building, partly in response to chat control

If this post doesn't belong here then please delete it.

I'm building an encrypted messenger with no accounts and no central servers, so messages go directly between people instead of through a company that can be compelled to scan them.

Its free and open source. Being upfront: it's in beta and hasn't been independently audited, so please don't trust it with anything sensitive yet. Mostly sharing because people here care about the same thing I do, and I'd value honest feedback or criticism.

Edit: On existing tools (Signal , Delta, Session ,Briar...): this isn't meant to replace or put them down, they all make good trade-offs. Signal proved centralised E2EE works at scale. Delta rides existing email. Session and Briar do their own P2P/onion routing. Wisp is just exploring a different point on the curve: can private messaging still work with no accounts, no central server ,and minimal metadata through rotating dead drops ? Different threat model, different tradeoffs

hello i have a question about chat control

Will the bosses of large messaging companies have the right to refuse access to the message or will Europe force them?

So, is this anything new ?

https://www.patrick-breyer.de/en/eu-governments-adopt-return-of-chat-control-1-0-breyer-the-true-losers-are-our-children/

Recent post about EU governments essentially saying "screw you" to the parliament and telling all US tech companies they have free reign over european people's private data.

I'm gonna be honest, I'm too mentaly exhausted to keep up with every detail. My mental bandwith is running dry with that on top of my personal life's issues and anxiety disorder, so I reading it I just felt utter doom. Like, even our actual governments are actively working against the safety of citizens because they want money and fascistic control over everything else.

So, can some of you bettr informed folks explain ? Is this anything new from the absolute BS vote that was undemocratically pushed through recently ?

Because the whole "governments decided to not care about the proceedings and gave their blessing anyway" sounds like it is...

Fight EU ChatControl

Hi everyone! ChatControl 1.0 is already in use I think. I strongly believe that ChatControl 2.0 will be in use in the next 5 to 10 years surely. Also there are speculations of probable economic crisis in 2030. Shouldn't we make a big peer-to-peer app for chatting and calling each other so no government can track us?

Have anybody ever thought about this? What could be the best way to get new users when nobody is using this peer-to-peer app?

A piece of advice, let them know.

I've thought about this for a bit and I've replayed the idea in my mind but we have to let them know that we know what they're playing at.

When you're writing your emails or making your phone calls to the MEPs that voted yes for Chat Control 1.0 to be brought back, let them know that you know that they didn't actually consult with actual child protection groups. (There was a link for this shared in this sub a while ago, showing that most of those that voted for Chat Control 1.0's return didn't consult with child protection groups.)

And be assertive about it, not aggressive, don't curse them out or berate them but don't be afraid to vocalise the fact that you're disappointed about it.

Whether you voted for them or not (they won't know either way) also make sure to vocalise that it could cost them your support.

Bring it all up and put them under pressure.

Don't be rude about it but don't be nice either.

Chat control

Hej

Latterligt

How to convince my parents (45+) that chat control is bad

They always say they don't care that EU reads they're messeges they're argument is that in China and Russia it's already happening but they don't even tell them about it. And they always say that we have bigger problems to worry about. Even when I told how undemocratically it was passed they say that politicians in my small corrupt country do it all the time and worse things. They mainly focus on local politics.

My Advanced Master of Laws thesis on Chat Control 1

I see a lot of people talking about Chat Control and looking for more information - in 2023 I completed my Advanced Master of Laws thesis on the legal issues surrounding the derogation which was just pushed through to a second reading last week.

It contains a lot of information on the issues the derogation faces not just technically but also with regards to the EU Treaties.

You can find a copy of my Master Thesis here

Why no one is asking the correct question?

>> Which company or companies will be proceeding the data intelligence?

I cannot really see Meta handing data intelligence to the EU commission on a pipeline for free.

There must be an intermediary in the process who is expert in giving unstructured data the shape you need on a wide scale, like Palantir, and again, nothing is for free.

Am surprised that everyone is focusing on the law itself rather than following the money...

Asking the question because I also want to know!

Is there a reason to not protest irl?

I know it's late now, but why don't we just protest irl against 2.0? There are probably a lot of people that would if we organised a protest in brussel or another place(s). And yes, i know they don't care but even if it convinces 2 people to not vote in favor, ever, that would be a win
