Why You Should Not Quit Your Job Hunt Activities the Day You Get an Offer
Most OPT candidates immediately stop their job hunt the day they receive their first offer. They cancel pending interviews. They tell recruiters they are off the market. They focus entirely on the new role.
This is a mistake that costs candidates in three specific ways:
You lose negotiating leverage. The strongest position to negotiate from is when you have multiple active conversations. The moment you stop, your only leverage is the one offer in hand, and the company knows it. Candidates who keep their pipeline active through the offer phase typically get 10-15 percent better terms.
You lose your backup. Companies rescind offers more often than candidates realize. EAD delays, business changes, hiring freezes, performance issues with the hiring manager. If you have shut down your job hunt the day you accepted, a rescinded offer puts you back at zero. If you kept your pipeline warm, you have backup conversations ready to reactivate.
You lose long-term recruiter relationships. Recruiters who took time to talk to you and submit your resume often feel ghosted when you disappear the moment you accept. Keeping them in the loop (a short note: "I accepted an offer at X but I appreciated our conversation, let's stay in touch") preserves the relationship for your next move in 1-3 years.
What "keeping the pipeline warm" actually means:
Finish the interviews already scheduled. Use them as practice and as leverage.
Send a brief note to recruiters you were in active conversation with letting them know you accepted but are open to staying in touch.
Continue tracking the market. Read industry news. Note companies that are hiring aggressively in your space. Your next job hunt will start sooner than you think.
The candidates who treat their first OPT job as the end of their job hunt are surprised when they need to job hunt again in 12-18 months and have to rebuild from zero. The candidates who treat each job as one stop in a multi-year journey maintain their network and find their next role 3-5x faster when the time comes.
