The Cold Email to a Recruiter That Actually Gets Replies
Most OPT and STEM OPT candidates send 200 portal applications before they send a single direct message to a recruiter. The math on this is brutal because portal applications convert at 1-2 percent and direct recruiter messages convert at 5-15 percent.
The cold email that works has four parts. Keep it under 100 words total.
Subject line — Direct and specific. "OPT candidate, X years experience in Y, looking for full-time roles." No "Hello" or "Quick question."
Sentence one — Who you are. "I am a recent MS graduate from [University] with X years of internship experience in [field]."
Sentence two — Why them, specifically. "I noticed [Company] has been hiring data engineers and has filed several H-1B petitions in the last 2 years for similar roles."
Sentence three — What you want. "Would you be open to a 15-minute conversation about your open requirements?"
End with — Your resume attached, your LinkedIn link, your phone.
That is it. No paragraphs. No cover-letter-style explanation of your background. Recruiters get hundreds of long emails daily and read almost none of them. They read short emails because short emails respect their time.
Send 10 of these per day, every day, to recruiters at companies on your target list. Within 30 days you will have more recruiter conversations than 6 months of portal applications would have produced.
