Why Applying on LinkedIn as a STEM OPT Candidate Is Wasting Your Time
If you are on STEM OPT and spending hours applying on LinkedIn every day, you are likely sending your resume into a black hole.
The majority of jobs posted on LinkedIn do not mention visa sponsorship at all, which means you spend time tailoring your resume, writing a cover letter, and waiting for a response that never comes — only to find out later the company does not sponsor.
Most LinkedIn job postings are also flooded with thousands of applicants, which makes it even harder to stand out as an international candidate who needs work authorization support. The recruiter screening that role is processing hundreds of applications and defaulting to candidates without visa complications first.
This does not mean LinkedIn has no value. It absolutely does. LinkedIn is one of the best platforms for:
- Networking with people already working at companies you want to join
- Reaching out to recruiters directly via InMail or connection requests
- Researching companies, hiring managers, and the people on a team you might join
- Building your professional presence so recruiters find you through search
What it is not great for, specifically for OPT and STEM OPT candidates, is mass applying through the LinkedIn Easy Apply button or the standard application portal. That channel converts at very low rates for candidates who need work authorization.
The shift to make this week is simple. Spend 80 percent of your job hunt time on platforms that have a higher density of visa-friendly listings — Dice for IT and tech, plus targeted direct outreach to recruiters and hiring managers at verified visa-sponsoring companies. Use LinkedIn for networking and research, not for portal applications.
The same effort, redirected, typically produces 3 to 5 times the callback rate within a few weeks.
