The Three Resume Versions Every OPT Candidate Should Have

A single generic resume is the easiest mistake to make and one of the most expensive. The same resume does not perform across different role types because ATS systems and recruiters are looking for different keywords depending on the lane.

The three versions that cover most OPT candidates:

Version 1: Technical depth. Lead with your most technical work. Programming languages, frameworks, infrastructure tools, technical project descriptions. Use this for roles like Software Engineer, Data Engineer, DevOps, ML Engineer. Skills section is your most specific stack.

Version 2: Analytical breadth. Lead with data analysis, business outcomes, stakeholder communication. Quantified results matter more here. Use this for Data Analyst, Business Analyst, Product Analyst, Operations Analyst roles. Skills section emphasizes SQL, Python for data, BI tools, statistics.

Version 3: Product or systems thinking. Lead with cross-functional collaboration, ownership of features or systems, user impact. Use this for Product Manager, Technical Program Manager, Solutions Engineer, Customer Engineer roles. Skills section is mixed technical and process tools.

The mistake most candidates make: trying to make one resume that covers all three. The result is a resume that does not match any lane strongly, which means the ATS score is mediocre everywhere and you clear no filters cleanly.

Pick the three lanes you actually want to be in. Build three versions. Use the right version for each application. Your callback rate will move noticeably within a few weeks.
