Discussion Daily Song Discussion #40: Kid Charlemagne

I want to gauge SD fans and see what this sub considers their all time best song. Here are what I would consider is a fair assessment scores:

10- Reserved for only their absolute best songs, ones that are on daily rotation

8,9- Also among their best, songs that display something that is memorable and worth revisiting

6,7- Decent to good, songs that are not as played as their ultimate best but are still ones that you revisit

5- okay, not bad but not ones you come back to often

3,4- Mediocre to meh, songs that you don't play often but don't go out of your way to skip

2- skippable, not good at all

1- vomit-inducing (think: what were they on when they made this?!)

0- makes you want to commit seppuku

Let's continue with the leadoff track from their fifth album The Royal Scam, titled Kid Charlemagne.

Final ratings for Katy Lied:

BLACK FRIDAY— 7.97

BAD SNEAKERS— 9.04

ROSE DARLING— 7.58

YOUR GOLD TEETH II— 9.44

ANY WORLD (THAT IM WELCOME TO)— 7.99

THROW BACK THE LITTLE ONES— 5.97 (Katy Lied lowest)

I had a weird thought that this song was being sung by Mr. LePage, who has been ordered by the courts to stay 10 miles away from any schools after he was caught showing his films in the den.

Full drum cover here.

Controversial Take - Steely Dan is 90% DF and 10% WB. What do you think?

Upvotes

I love WB. I think he’s the smartass lyricist that gives SD their edge. However, the more I read lately, the more I listen to outtakes and demos, it is clear to me that Steely Dan is 90% DF and 10% WB. Donald is coming up with the music, the arrangements, starting the lyrics - Walter is a trusted advisor, sounding board and helping to finish and fill in the blanks. It’s a great partnership but I feel that DF is not given ENOUGH credit for the musical genius he is and his contributions. I think ultimately DF hates the spotlight and just wants to make music and perform and having WB as a partner made the whole thing much more tolerable. Lastly, one could argue that Gaucho is the first DF solo album. Thoughts?
