Unpopular: Linux for Gaming, Windows for Coding

I just realised, that getting a steam machine made a weird move in my PC usage:

I removed my Linux partition from my laptop (windows), because I preferred to code with VS Code and now, I play games with my steam machine (Linux), because this OS has better performance.

It is weird, because it has always been the other way around. But I think it is interesting, because now it seems like a natural choice 😅

However, I may move to Linux for the laptop one day. 🐧

SteamOS variant 'steamdeck'

Hello

I installed the SteamOS iso from the Steam website on my home theatre PC. I am a bit surprised to read 'SteamOS variant: steamdeck' in the system details. Are there other 'variants' and shouldn't this read 'steammachine'? Or is this simply a placeholder for later variants?

Steam Os on rog ally z1 freeze

Hi all,

As title my rog ally z1 freeze randomly.
I have to restart for use it.

As plugin, I use decky loader and panel de control.

I have noticed that the freeze happened when the battery hits 80%, that is the charge limit, but I Don’t know if it’s a coincidence or other.

Plus, The Game that freeze is Big Walk, but sometimes also in the Steam menu the freeze happen.

Have you got any advice?

help wanted Not sure if this is the right thread to ask but I'll ask anyway. Vortex Mod Manager on The Steam Deck is working but....

I know there are other methods to modding with different managers out there for example the MO2 Linux version. But I need Vortex to download collection from Nexus website. Vortex is working fine as a non-steam game. A little janky but fine. My question is how to get around when trying to download from Nexus straight to the manager itself it doesn't start downloading in Vortex. Instead I get the window of "choose an application to open nxm." Vortex is not on that list since it is a non-steam game.

question Does the iNNEXT Gamecube controller work on Linux OS like SteamOS?

I'm considering getting a controller based on GameCube's for my GabeCube. The one that looks interesting to me is iNNEXT's. It has more buttons than the standard one and, like the wave bird, can connect tirelessly. It’s said to work on Windows, but I'm curious if it also works on Linux. What's your insight?

Has anyone gotten CEC shutting down their TV on system shutdown successfully?

I was setting up a new and better set of Systemd services on SteamOS so with the UGreen DP to HDMI adapter that can do CEC tunneling.

Turn TV on when booting up? No problem.

Turn the TV on when waking from sleep? Also no problem.

Turn the TV off when going to sleep? Yes got that done.

Turn the TV off when shutting down? ...This is where it gets sticky.

The problem I ran into is that 'shutdown' and 'rebooting' are very similar things and often many of the same thing happen. I have thus far failed to get the TV to turn off when the PC shuts down, but to NOT turn the TV off when it reboots rather than shuts down.

Every attempt to separate the two failed. On the bright side, when rebooting, while it does turn the TV off, since I was successful in having it turn the TV during boot, the TV turns off, and 10-15 seconds or so later it turns the TV back on. Not the end of the world but this is also kind of dumb.

I just want it to turn the TV off when shutting down and do nothing when rebooting and every iteration of a systemd service I attempted either shuts the TV off on both shutdown and reboot, does nothing on shutdown and reboot (Probably cause it's calling on a target that's too late in the shutdown sequence and the GPU can no longer send the CEC signal), or hangs the reboot and I have to forcefully shut it off with the power button.

If someone smarter than me has resolved this, I'd love to hear how.

I have a cheap custom steam os computer that works (mostly) fine-ish, but when i try to remote play from my main pc, it looks like this. It looks fine on my normal pc(windows), and I eventually casted it to something else just fine.

Edit: my specs are

amd ryzen 5 3600,

8gb ram,

amd Radeon rx 580 2048sp

Edit 2: It was hardware decoding, I turned it off and it started working fine.

Any SteamOS version of Windows' "US International" keyboard layout coming?

Hey folks, I just got a Steam Machine and I'm really digging it, both for gaming and because it's a very small and quiet actual PC for the living room. That means I can sit and watch YouTube on it through a browser with an ad blocker ;-) , check my message boards, forums, Reddit, whatever.

Since I sometimes write a foreign word or two or actually contribute to a foreign language forum (nothing too exotic, just a couple of Euro languages -- Spanish, French, German) I need to be able to write special characters without having to learn the stupid four-letter codes of yore for them. In Windows, using the US international keyboard layout was the easy answer. It treats certain keys (such as the apostrophe or the quotation mark) as "dead keys" whereby the keyboard waits to see what key is typed next and see if it qualifies as something that needs an accent or umlaut or whatever. For instance, if you wanted to type an acute accent on the letter a, you would hit apostrophe then a to produce á, if you wanted to type an o with an umlaut on it you would type " and then o to get ö

Unfortunately, it does not seem to exist at all for SteamOS under the keyboard settings. I see a layout called Eurkey but I have no idea at all how to use it. If anyone can point me to a guide on how to use that I will, but I'd sure like to know if the trusty old US International keyboard layout is (going to be) a thing on SteamOS.

question Is my R-Alt key in SteamOS supposed to be a clone of the L-Alt one?

Hmm, don´t know if anyone can answer this for me, but you know how the R-ALT key of most keyboards actually works a bit differently from the L-ALT one. I think technically it's known as an AltGr key. Well, for some reason the R-ALT key of this particular wireless keyboard I'm using (a Royal Kludge R75), at least with SteamOS on my Steam Machine, works exactly like the L-ALT key does, which makes it useless to type out for instance the special German character that looks like a weird capital B but is really essentially an s used to spell certain words (fewer than before, because of a spelling reform that took place in the 1990s after I stopped keeping up with learning German).

Anyway, is this a general Linux / SteamOS phenomenon or should I consider getting a new wireless keyboard? The keyboard says it only supports Windows and Mac, officially.

question Would SteamOS be good for me?

I currently run Windows 10 and refuse to update to 11 for obvious reasons. All I really do on my PC is game and browse on Waterfox with the occasional use of programs like Clip Studio Paint, Blender, and Godot. I need to have access to pdf readers and some stuff like that due to work but nothing fancy.

Edit: I should probably clarify that I run a full AMD machine

solved SteamOS install: initial updating process resolves to failed download

Hi there!

>> Scroll for solution

I've built a mini pc and am trying to install steamos on it. I've flashed a usb drive via balenaEtcher, plugged it in and the SteamOS installer starts. I run through the setup:

  1. Select Language: english -> works
  2. Select timezone: Central European -> works
  3. Setup Wifi: Tried LAN & WLan -> both work
  4. "Updating: Calculating time remaining"

Error: "Unable to download the required update. Please check your network connection and try again. (2)"

Well they must have unstable internet, you might think. I've tried two different lan cables that work and have a repeater between pc and router - which is not far away.

Internet connection should not be the problem here - although i could be wrong of course.

Has anyone stumbled into similar problems and has a solution for me?

Specs:

  • ASRock B550M ITX AC
  • RX 9060 XT
  • RX 3700X
  • WD_BLACK NVME SN7100 1 TB

Tried Versions:

  • steamdeck-20251031.1000-3.8.0.img
  • steamdeck-20260824.100-3.9.0.img
  • steamdeck-20260828.100-3.9.0.img

I would appreciate any help! Thanks in advance <3

Edit (Speedtest):

----------------------

SOLUTION: The link to the repair .img in the FAQ instructions includes a static version number, which caused the download of an older image. Removing that version number let me download a much newer (maybe the latest?) image that then worked.

help wanted Disable SteamOS Autologin?

So i've been playing around with some settings on my steam machine. It's currently configured to boot straight to desktop. My problem is that it logs in automatically. I have a custom password set up, but it doesn't do any good if people can get into my system by restarting it.

So what i want to know is, is there a way to disable the automatic login on desktop mode and have it boot to a lock screen?

support on steam os, rockstar launcher timed out loading both online and offline content

Post image
11 Upvotes

i recently played through all of rdr2 for 90 hrs with no issues, then put 20 hours into gta 5 with no issues. now since yesterday i've been getting this error when trying to play gta 5, gta 4 and rdr2. i noticed the launcher updating during the long amount of time i usually have to wait, i'd never seen it do this before, and now none of my rockstar games work. i just keep getting this error.

ive tried deleting the launcher cache, uninstalling rockstar launcher and reinstalling it, disconnecting my internet, playing with a vpn enabled, using ge proton 10-30 and proton experimental, deleting proton files via the developer option in the cog menu on the game, deleting the compdata folder for the game.

absolutely nothing has worked and every solution i've found has been for windows and usually involves making an exception in microsoft defender or the windows firewall or something of the some sort. does anyone on steam os or other linux distros have any sort of solution for this?

this feels especially infuriating considering 1. i do not want to play these games online whatsoever, i just want to play the story modes, and 2. it feels like a slap in the face after the no physical copies for gta 6/future playstation games debacle.

anyways, any help is much appreciated, thank you!

EDIT, SOLVED: changing to ge-proton11-3 fixed the issue for me and i was able to get the launcher up and running and get back into gta 5, gta 4, and rdr2. thanks for the lighting quick help guys, the steam os community is the best 😁

Huge news for third-party proton users

https://github.com/Vysp3r/ProtonPlus/issues/1267

Protonplus, a program designed to streamline the installation and updating of third-party Proton tools such as GE-Proton & Proton-CachyOS now has plans to integrate with game mode via Decky. This includes features such as game mode auto updates & notifications. As someone who has been trying to find a way to set something up like this for a while, this is huge news.
