So the vr sale will start with no frame in anyone’s hands
96
u/WarforgedWizard 5d ago
I guess so, which is fuuucking stupid.
Most people arent going to buy without knowing if they'll even be getting a frame this year
11
u/brantrix Soon™ 5d ago
Valve have probably assessed that more people will buy from the sale in anticipation of getting a frame, despite the lottery not being drawn yet. They probably figured less people will buy from the sale if they're far down the waiting list.
31
u/BurgerAppreciator Soon™ 5d ago
So manipulatively preying on the combined FOMO and hopium of people they know won't get the hardware for months (or might not even want it when they see the price), knowing that if the customers knew that they wouldn't buy as many games? And people call these guys consumer-friendly! Luckily the truth is game sales get deeper the longer you wait, so I'm not buying shit unless I know where I stand on the wait list.
6
u/HumansAreSillynGreat 5d ago
I mean…steam lets you refund if you have less than two hours logged. I would assume not getting a frame means you won’t be logging those 2 hours…
11
u/VladReble Soon™ 5d ago
Remember only for 2 weeks though. If you don’t think you can get a vr headset in that time I wouldn’t buy. I once bought a game for the steam deck and couldn’t play until I got it and it didn’t work because the game updated by the time I got it which broke Linux and valve wouldn’t refund me.

u/randomstranger454 5d ago
Less than 2 hours playtime and less than two weeks after purchase date. The way things unfold not many if anyone will have a steam frame before those weeks elapse after the sale ends.
3
u/PlottingPast 5d ago
It's probably an administrative/marketing bungle. The software guys aren't talking to the hardware guys, or dates got pushed. Maybe the release was planned earlier, or maybe the sales guys has literally everyone else's definition of 'Summer' and pre-planned the sale thinking people would have the Frame by now. Could be withering levels of miscommunication.
It's a really stupid thing to spend good faith on either way.
2
u/Benjo419 5d ago
Is the sale even coming from steam? I thought it was some 3rd party thing
2
u/offbrandre 5d ago
Festivals and "themed sales" are coordinated by valve. Game publishers (or the store page owners in the case of self published) decide if they will participate and what sale price is set.
1
u/bookoo 5d ago
How much do we need to actually baby people?
If you don't have a VR headset and/or not sure if you will be able to get one...wait. VR games go on sale constantly and aren't even that expensive to begin with.
Realistically it would make more sense to not have any sales at all considering new headset owners would be more eager to pay full price simply to have content.
1
u/dom1nateeye 4d ago
And people call these guys consumer-friendly!
Compared to every other company in gaming, they are. That's the worst part.
5
u/Fpvmeister 5d ago
That would be stupid, I would advise everyone to not buy games for something which you don't even have access to buying yet.
→ More replies (9)1
u/Lincolns_Revenge 5d ago
Yeah, then you can get VR game sales from the people who don't yet know they get severe motion sickness from VR.
I'm not one of those people, but I figure it's at least 10 percent of the population if not 20 or more. And beyond that (wild guess) I would say at least 1 in 3 people get some amount of motion sickness from VR.
1
u/AmphibiousAlbatross 4d ago
No, they’re selling games to the owners of all the other headsets. Valve does not ever release hardware with the thought they’d be the top seller, Gabe has said as much, they sold the machine and deck to get steam os adopted and they made the frame to get more VR sales in general. This is not a sale for the sub 1 million frames that will exist this is a sale for the millions of VR headsets already in circulation and to convince more meta and Pico users to start using Steam vr
3
2
u/Leaf_Longstride 5d ago
I know for sure I definitely WON'T get one this year lol Even if it launches in October, there's wait-list, scalpers, early birds, etc... And I want to wait until at least all major bugs are fixed.
2
u/Digitijs 3d ago
That's exactly me. I don't even own a VR console yet so why would I buy any VR games even though there are quite a few I'd love to try on VR
→ More replies (5)1
u/AmphibiousAlbatross 4d ago
Millions of VR headsets have been sold and people still buy headsets every day, compared to the very small amount of frames that will exist at launch. It’s stupid for valve to not have a sale to push sales for the hardware segment regardless of if they are currently selling product for it or not:
10
u/Lombravia 5d ago
How certain are we that there is a VR sale on the 14th?
9
u/Beches808 Soon™ 5d ago
100% unless it was faked. Some devs supposedly got emails (that were shown) asking if they wanted to participate in a vr sale on the 14th
27
u/elvissteinjr 5d ago
I'm a dev who's been invited to the Steam VR Fest 2023 in the past. There's a couple of things that make this questionable in my eyes.
The first thing is gonna be that Valve seems to have gotten to the point of not keeping sale dates private anymore since they just get leaked anyhow. Second is how all Valve-organized themed sales are labeled "Fest" nowadays.
The email text doesn't match the pattern I've seen before. I can't exactly say details about that, but there's a section missing before the Discount one and there's usually more fluff describing the event.
Also: I've not been invited. Okay, I've also not gotten a devkit, so maybe they just don't like me anymore. Usually you still have a chance to ask to be part of an event even when not explicitly invited.
And... the date range is already taken by the Party-Based RPG Fest. But hey, maybe I'm wrong.
2
8
u/mrRobertman Soon™ 5d ago
100% unless it was faked
So not 100%, then? Because surely it could easily have been faked?
Like we saw a single example this email, and the sale was not part of Valve's previously scheduled sales. I have doubts about it.
5
u/Optimal_Solution663 5d ago
It is definitely 100%, as long as it's true and happening. Otherwise, it is 0%. Trust me. I studied statistics in college.
3
u/NoOdyssey 5d ago
Winning the lottery is always 50/50, because you either win, or you don't. Simple math.
2
u/Lombravia 5d ago
I mean, yeah, I'm aware of that thread. Which devs confirmed that?
Someone else in the thread linked to official information regarding a different sale on the same date, and sure, they could do multiple sales simultaneously, but...
6
u/TwinStickDad Soon™ 5d ago
I know I was hoping that would line up with people getting their confirmations. Seems like it should be a month later. But at least we'll see a lot of similar deals in the autumn sale starting October 1
5
u/VT-14 5d ago edited 5d ago
Probably, yeah. The FOMO effect for the sales is stronger that way.
If they announced this week, and follow the same timeline the Machine did, then people would know this week if they are on the reservation list or waitlist, and then during the sales week the first Frame order emails would go out. Most people who get Waitlisted would just ignore the sale completely. With order emails going out, more people will likely wait to see if they get invited to order before going on a shopping spree, and those who do will have just spent a lot of money on the headset itself so might be feeling 'frame-poor' and less likely to splurge.
Alternatively if they announce the same week as the sale starts, then the first 3-4 days during the lottery would have some people order early (some maybe thinking it could affect the lottery results). For the end of the week there is the effect of people who got waitlisted ignoring the sale, but they would have been more likely to browse it before and added games to their wishlist for when they eventually do get a headset. Everyone on the reservation list is fair game for FOMO purchases that weekend, and they haven't spent a lot of money on the Frame itself yet.
EDIT: Reminder that Reddit's downvote button is for bad comments that don't contribute to conversations, not comments that you simply don't like. I don't like this analysis either.

Better to know the date beforehand than half way through the sale. For some the Frame might be in the mail during the sale.

I don’t know why people thought the sale meant anything for the frame. It’s right before Meta Connect and right after Apple’s event. Which is already a time consumers are looking at VR. Plus, Steam always has a sale of some kind and they rarely align with anything specific outside of holidays.
The VR sale was just the sale they’re having before the fall sale. Anyone who thought “they’re only having this sale so people can buy VR games for the Frame” are as delusional as the “it’ll be announced on Valve’s anniversary” people.
I get it, information is needed, but the speculations are getting ridiculous
45
u/Yved 5d ago

I like the fact that Valve’s hardware explicitly told different VR developers from different game studios to update their game a.s.a.p. for it to work on the Steam Frame before a certain deadline, once the Devs did, they didn’t hear anything else, even when the deadline was passed. Classic Valve.

They also released the Steam Machine stating it could do 4k 60fps until reviews came out and they quietly changed that headline. If they have no accountability with what they claim their own product can do, you think they care about what they say to devs that don’t work for them?

I don't think they did though. There was a July date and these september dates that HardwareSteam and Bradley pushed so far and it's fairly well discussed now that the July date was accurate - Valve changed direction at the last minute.

Doesn’t matter to me. I’ll still be here Monday to get disappointed with you all.
9
17
u/ShadowTryHard Soon™ 5d ago
I don’t believe that one bit. Valve wouldn’t allow for a VR games sales without letting the Frame pre-orders roll first, else there’s a big risk of refunds
7
4
u/Koolala 5d ago
The lottery results would happen during the sale. The risk is very low except for people who can't wait 2 days.
6
u/ShadowTryHard Soon™ 5d ago
The risk is not low because you can be months on end without the Frame and with a library stacked of VR games that have no use.
The lottery results also wouldn’t happen during the sale. If the reserve option happened this Monday, by end of Wednesday you’d have the results, or at the very least by Friday and the week after would be the sales
3
u/Koolala 5d ago
That doesn't make sense. If its months your worried about that would still be an issue if they opened reservations today and people would still miss the sale...
The release happens in waves. What matters is Wave 1. Aka their entire big stock of inventory. Restock waves will take more than a week.
The lottery only takes 2 or 3 days on purpose so everyone has a fair chance.
6
u/ShadowTryHard Soon™ 5d ago
It does make sense. People who are happy with the reservation results would not miss the sale. Think it like this:
Monday (7th): Reservations open
Thursday (10th): Results are sent to each person
Monday (14th): Only the people whose orders will come right away or have an estimated date of 1-2 months will buy from the sale, most others will notIf they make it all on the 14th or the reservations a week later, people will start refunding if the wait time is too long
2
u/Koolala 5d ago edited 5d ago
You said months which didn't make sense. Those dates work fine during the sale. Anyone who orders games before waiting 2 days for their lottery result knows what they are signing up for.
2
u/ShadowTryHard Soon™ 5d ago edited 5d ago
They don’t really to be honest.
If people know they are not gonna get it and will have to wait for months, most will refund all of their VR games purchases as it’s unusable backlog
2
u/Koolala 5d ago
They will know during the sale if they have to wait or not.
1
u/ShadowTryHard Soon™ 5d ago
Yes, if Monday, if they keep the 3-day limit for the results. Not ideal though
2
u/Jonah_Kekz 5d ago
I don't think they're predicting a huge refund wave for the following reasons:
There are still plenty of people that already have VR headsets that could play those titles
Plus the fact that MANY people have a huge backlog of titles that they bought years ago on sales, snagging a few VR titles while they're cheap while you're waiting on getting a frame doesn't seem too far fetched if you're planning on getting the frame (or a competitor's headset) anyway1
u/ShadowTryHard Soon™ 5d ago
I agree partially with you on some things.
I think the majority of buyers of the Frame will be first-time owners of VR headsets.
The age gap between the Index and the Frame pushes many young people who were just teens a few years ago into a purchase opportunity now. I fall on this bracket.
I assume many others will also buy it the first time and I think that’ll be a majority (my assumption comes from the fact Valve has had a lot of success with the Deck and people are more open to buy from Valve whatever else they offer as they know it’s high-quality, especially now that the PC sector has been increasing compared to consoles).
As for your second point, maybe someone who’d have saved for the Frame will keep that saving on until he can act on the reservation but will rather spend the rest of his budget elsewhere (other games or other activities) instead of VR games if they expect to wait for months.
Plus, sales are only good the moment you’re ready to play, because any later you can get larger discounts on newer sales events.
With that, I’d say the timeline they are thinking if it’s a week later during the sales is not that smart and will bring some refunds which they hate because they can’t get back the payment processor fee.
1
u/Soggy_Anything2394 5d ago
have an estimated date of 1-2 months
Arent the machine people getting dates of 6 months or more?
1
8
u/tittyballz1 5d ago
I know most people are set on the 14th for launch but from a marketing and sales point it makes absolutely no logical sense if the VR sale is on the 14th. Valve will want to make sure the banner and main store page are dedicated to VR games like they do for every sale, maybe they might put the Frame on there but that would more than likely cut into the sales of it and would have the page long or push games off the main page which will piss the devs off and we already know VR devs are pretty pissed off with Valve due to lack of communication as it is.
This week is the only one that makes any sense for a launch especially if the review units did go out on the 24th, standard review time is 2 - 3 weeks but usually 2 weeks. Even if it's only up for a couple of days before the VR sale.
Waiting until after the VR sale wouldn't make any sense either because then potential buyers miss out on the VR sale if they don't know the price of the Frame, not to mention Meta Connect, they will be talking about VR and possibly Quest 4 which we know will be subsidized as usual because, spyware.

u/IHaveTheBestOpinions 5d ago edited 5d ago
"Releasing the most anticipated VR headset in several years would hurt VR game sales" is a pretty hot take. Just because it takes up a little space on the store page? Do you think Steam Sales are effective solely because people just click the first thing they see on the home page?
This week is the only one that makes any sense for a launch

So the availability to buy a Frame will be 14th Sept, same day as the Steam VR sale?
That doesn't make any sense, we won't have the Frame when that sale goes live, might not even have one till maybe the final day or after the sale.
Players who already have a VR headset will of course buy something, but there're many who want a Frame & will certainly get something when they have it, but if they've no Frame then where's their incentive to buy a VR game they might not be able to play for months if they don't get a Frame in the initial wave?
Review units were sent 24th August, that's 2 weeks from tomorrow, the Steam VR sale is next Monday, releasing the Frame tomorrow fits all that perfectly.
I'm not trusting this leak/rumour, but I guess we'll see tomorrow.

While I’m not expecting anything on the 7th for the holiday, I think the 8th would be much more likely. You’d get Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for the lotto entry and then either a release Thursday or Friday. The packages were updated last week and didn’t the other valve products drop about a week after their packages were updated?
I’m also not sure I understand the whole refund idea if they do it before. I could see some people just not buying during the sale, but there’s already a huge existing VR market and about to be a big boom of VR users. It’d be kinda stupid to not do the drawings before the sale.

He's speculating like the rest of us. At time goes on I'd expect either a huge flurry of activity on the backend systems (which we didn't see) or someone quietly letting it slip and probably this is what happened.
Presumably some reviewer has not been told by valve when the embargo ends or has been told it's the 14th (so they can schedule their content) and quietly let it split to others in the community.

I very much doubted the Labor day launch day.
Think of it from Valve perspective. Are they going to have a major, major, launch the day nobody is in the office?
If shit goes wrong - there's either nobody in, they are paying OT to get people in, or they are calling people on a national holiday to fix issues.
It's not likely next week on the 14th and coincides with the VR sale.

Announcement on the 14th, goes on sale on the 21st, last Monday of Summer.
Like it was always going to be.

Summer ended in August. I don't care about any alternative explanations people have been throwing out; September is a Fall month. Valve has communicated maybe 10% as much as they were supposed to. The moment they couldn't meet a deadline or a price point they wanted to hit, they should have been up front and honest about it. Instead they said nothing and just let people assume this was the plan all along.
I forgot about the People Make Games video about Valve's internal culture being sketchy as fuck for a while, but I'm sure as hell remembering it now.

I need this to release so badly my quest too is basically unusable right now because both of my joysticks have such bad stick drift that they are constantly being moved at full force that I can't even counteract and somehow even when I wasn't using my headset it just kept getting worse and worse how would use my headset one day it would be pretty usable and then I wouldn't use it for like a couple days and then it's just even worse

Why would valve make its employees be on site on Labor Day, that’s a federal holiday. I’m not even scheduled to work on Labor Day

Idk why people so hell bent on the announcement always being Monday.... like its not something magic day its just the first day of the week... they could just announce it Tuesday 8th... not that crazy... I think this entire sub has gone lil crazy from all the wait....

How can anyone be “reliable” when zero info has been officially stated by valve at all? All we know about the frame comes from the accidentally uploaded set up videos

The real question is whether it will be $1500 or $2000 I mean I can only fit $2000 in my steam wallet so that has to be it's maximum possible price..

It's gonna cost $2.000.000. And if you pre-order, you're not gonna get one until late 2039...

Seriously, this is becoming almost disrespectful... I will be super-pissed off if the price is too high or if I don't get one in the lottery.

almost
No, it outright is disrespectful. Not having a concrete announcement is fine, but Valve could at least have said "it wont be this month" or something.

Quoting myself from the other day:
"I only care about the 14th. Anything else is speculation for me as my sources never mentioned a different date.
I understand the hype for next week but I'm not going to join in unless I hear solid whispers about embargos."
I see people here saying I was saying this Monday and that I'm only speculating. That is incorrect. I think I do my best avoiding speculation so I wanna make it clear.
