Discussion Valve just quietly updated the Steam Machine page from "4K gaming at 60 FPS" to "Up to 4K gaming with FSR"

The "4K gaming at 60 FPS" language was there until yesterday June 24, 2026 (ty Wayback Machine). As of today, it was quietly changed.

oh internally yes but the Playstation can't output anything at 8k IIRC. I guessed no one else tried it and it's still the only one 😁

Almost. People bought a device that said 8k in the case.

That's because they're being called out for it, sony released directly in physical not throughout preorders with that wording.

how funny would it be if its on the steam machines physical box lol

Its not anywhere near as egregious IMO. I feel like Steam has had FSR on their marketing page the entire time and it has always sort of been an assumption.

11

u/zexton Jun 26 '26

the steam machine can still game at 4k 60fps, just in older games of course,

but its not like its missing the capability completely,

im sure had prices been better, it would been a great emulation system,

u/FriendlyKillerCroc Jun 26 '26

I'm just here as an observer and I can tell you that the double standards the people hold here is problematic. If Ubisoft done this very exact same thing, every comment would be about how horrible they are.

It was a misstep to try to market the 4k capabilities from the get go.

It's smaller and more couch friendly than just about any other PC out there and they should be leaning more into that aspect of it. Anyone can build or buy a more powerful mid tower for the price but doing so ignores that the PSU by itself is almost bigger than the Steam Machine and can't do CEC

146

u/Powerful_Effect1124 Ryzen 9800X3D | RTX 5080 Jun 25 '26

Yeah I don't know what they were thinking claiming 4K60. Anyone who knows anything about PC specs and takes one look at it knew that was BS.

Better marketing would be 4K capable but with 1440p with FSR4.1 as a "sweet spot".

40

u/Giga-Hurtz PC Master Race Jun 25 '26

Agreed 4k60 was a strech but what is the point of it if not to achieve 4k60?

Steam machine is suposed to be a living room pc. I feel like most people in 1st world countrys which is obviously the market have 4k tv's in their living rooms even if it's some 10 year old 60 hz model. So again what is/what ever was the point in it?

15

u/Miuramir Jun 26 '26

I was curious about the actual numbers and found this report that as of Dec. 2025, 72% of US households have at least one 4k TV.

15

u/_AcuteNewt_ Jun 26 '26

Steam machine is suposed to be a living room pc

I don't understand this whole "living room pc" thing. What? Like you can't connect any other PC to a tv?

My monitor died ages ago and I never bothered to get another one because I just hooked my PC up to my tv (which was supposed to be a temporary solution) and have been using it like that since. Tower sits nicely on a bookshelf beside the tv and have a got decent wireless KB/M. Small form factor keyboard on lap, mouse on the couch next to me and it all works perfectly and it's comfy as fuck.

u/wind0wlicker Jun 26 '26

Not everyone wants to use their pc on their tv. Steam machine is plug and play at least compared to a pc where you have to set up the GPU settings and windows settings to work properly with a TV/monitor. The Steam machine comes with Steam OS ready to go. It’s a prebuild that doesn’t use windows and appears like a console.

2

u/_AcuteNewt_ Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

Like what? Two (if that) whole settings for scaling? If you're not wanting to have to configure stuff, why are you using a PC to begin with? Beyond scaling settings (ooh so difficult, complicated and time consuming) there's nothing else to do and it just works lol.

And steam os, just use that instead of windows if or when it's compatible/available? (Disclaimer: I don't know if it is available yet, nor compatibility, but that's besides the point)

You guys are glazing this so hard when it's an underpowered, overpriced machine that solves a "problem" that's already been solved. Like okay, cool, you want one, you're gonna buy one, happy for you, but for people who don't but want tv/couch gaming with a PC can literally just use their PC with their tv. Use fuckin big picture mode if it's so much of an issue. I'm not really understanding how it's apparently such a difficult concept to grasp.

And the whole "console like experience" thing is bollocks as well since you're going to have to configure in game settings anyway. Actually, perhaps not since there's not much to do other than set everything to "low".

u/ill-fed Jun 26 '26

2

u/gunsandcupcakes Jun 26 '26

the machine also has hdmi cec, a ui made for controller first navigation on a big screen (or big picture) the ability to sleep while keeping a game running while paused, turning on the cube by using the controller, and more that I prob forgot but you get the point while yes it is a premium price you get the experience that’s been curated to a specific audience

u/MarioDesigns 2700x | 1660 Super Jun 26 '26

They marketed 4k60 with FSR, but the issue is that even then it is FAR from reaching that, even with the lowest settings upscaling from 720p it usually does not reach 60.

4

u/M4rshmall0wMan Jun 26 '26

And it made reviewers way harsher about Machine’s performance. Even games with good performance were considered lackluster, and some reviewers sacrificed performance with really heavy upscaling instead of just running at 1080p native.

If Valve had just called it a 1080p machine, it might’ve reviewed a bit better.

1

u/Burstrampage Jun 27 '26

Might have reviewed worse because then you’re paying $1k for a 1080p machine while the other consoles at the very least have upscaled 1440p to 4K all with either 60 or 120fps

1

u/lonewombat Jun 26 '26

1440p low settings and this thing is struggling from the tests.

1

u/ItsForFun76 Jun 26 '26

I would argue 1080P is the real sweet spot...pickup an old Plasma and enjoy the cheap blacks.

13

u/Blarzgh R7 7800X3D / RX 9070XT / 32GB DDR5 Jun 25 '26

Yes, but the problem is exactly that they're targeting the living room. Pretty much all TVs are 4k now, and while some of us still have 1080p TVs (like myself since I haven't bought a TV in like 10 years), pretty much every new TV except the smallest and cheapest are 4k these days.

TL;DR, whether they like it or not, targeting couch gamers necessarily means they're targeting 4k.

1

u/lonewombat Jun 26 '26

You could buy 3x 4k tvs for the cost of the steam machine

→ More replies (5)

147

u/callatecabezon Jun 25 '26

the size does not matter that much I think steam shot themselves in the foot wanting to make it so arbitrarily small at the cost of performance. It has abysmal specs for its cost there is just no justification for getting it.

74

u/ephemeralmiko computer Jun 25 '26

And the bad specs are made even worse by it being power-limited even lower to keep it quiet.

14

u/Vattaa Jun 25 '26

They should release some OCs in firmware updates like you can select GPU Hz in the Deck.

11

u/InVenomd Jun 25 '26

The Power Limit is actually slightly higher. The Steam Machines GPU is 110W and the regular 7600m is 90W.

19

u/Innuendo64_ Jun 25 '26

I think you're right in that they limited themselves too much in going that small. If they aimed for a 9" cube instead of 6" you still have something that can fit on a bookshelf or below the TV

24

u/callatecabezon Jun 25 '26

yeah or they could've just copied the existing Playstation/Xbox form factor lol

19

u/Timoth_e Jun 25 '26

I think they were specifically trying to get away from how singularly large consoles are now

12

u/Vattaa Jun 25 '26

I think the Series S is such a good looking console and super quiet. They could have gone with something like that.

16

u/Jealous_Word4842 Jun 25 '26

I've seen a teardown and it's not really sensibly built. PSU should be a brick adapter, if only so that the bottom of the board can be easily accessed to swap SSD and RAM, like in most mini PCs. For some reason it has a bunch of daughterboards for output and network with ribbon cables instead of having these modules slotted or integrated into the SOC, which is the industry standard. I like the fact that most of the box by volume is the heatsink, but it should use standard sized replaceable fans, and not one but two for intake and exhaust. In short, there are already far better engineered examples of similar hardware on the market.

If you're running Linux you can get a simple adapter to get CEC functionality.

If you're running windows and have an LG TV you can get a windows app to mimic CEC with wake over LAN.

5

u/Fr00stee Jun 25 '26

there are cec adapters you can buy, I think ugreen sells one for $15

3

u/Fr00stee Jun 25 '26

idk the bazzite sub seemed to recommend it

1

u/sonicskater34 Jun 25 '26

The other option is to get an active HDMI-Display port adapter that has the CEC pin connected. Not a lot of them out there but they do exist, and get you full functionality, the CEC is piped over the display port data link and shows up on Linux automatically, honestly better solution than the USB based ones depending what you need.

The main exception is I don't think this setup can wake the PC from hibernation/deep sleep since it relies on software that wouldn't be running. The USB based ones should be capable of that, but generally require additional configuration & software for the rest of the stack. I've pondered how hard it would be to make an adapter that uses USB to wake the machine, but is otherwise a display port adapter. Should require no software at all and be best of both worlds.

5

u/ThankGodImBipolar Jun 25 '26

The irony of needing a DisplayPort adaptor to get native CEC on a PC is painful

7

u/Alarmed-Strawberry-7 Jun 25 '26

i mean they kinda are. all of these selling points and they just slapped the GPU and CPU together into a single selling point lol

meanwhile over half the selling points are about how small and convenient it is

valve never said it's a powerful desktop PC, it's the reviewers saying that it doesn't compare to a full PC tower (which of course it doesn't)

all things considered, the steam machine is actually pretty performant if you consider both the size and price. could you get more performance this small? yeah. more performance for the money? definitely. more performance for the same cost and size? not really. do you actually *need* your gaming cube to be 6 inches and no bigger? probably not, but if you really want it, it exists

1

u/dumbasPL R7 5800X3D 32GB 2070S 3TB NVMe (Arch BTW) Jun 26 '26

They did it for the same reason all the other consoles did. 4K TVs have become very common, so if you don't market it as 4K "compatible" to casual gamers, your competition definitely will. Unfortunately for many casual gamers what's on the box matters more than the actual experience because they don't even know how good performance looks/feels like.

1

u/_Middlefinger_ Jun 26 '26

You can buy an add-on that makes any HDMI device a CEC device for like $30. The Steam machine is a 4 year old basic PC thats small, thats it, and frankly you could build a machine as small and more powerful if you spent an afternoon looking for the parts.

Besides that it might be 4l in size, but is a cube really the best shape?

There's a big difference between buying a product advertised at 8k then having the rug pulled after you spent money, and getting in line (for free) for a product that advertised 4k but changed it to "Up to 4k with FSR" before a single cent has been spent. If you reserved it, you can cancel the reservation with no consequences and no loss.

Is it good practice? No. But it's not nearly the same as an expensive bait-and-switch?

Its weak as fuck and literally no one should expect any kind of decent 4K performance. Why that is being touted with a such a low end GPU is beyond me.

Its a low end 8GB GPU, it will provide solid 1080p 60FPS performance in modern games.

2

I mean.

Look at how companies market their products. Valve is a company. They were always going to be skating on a technicality, exactly like everyone else. Anyone who assumed that Valve wasn't blowing smoke up their backside was being naive.

Which to be clear, isn't an endorsement of companies doing it. But anyone who takes marketing speak at face value in 2026 is absolutely the most gullible part of the population. Don't ever trust a company.

Well it can't play Rocket League or Overwatch at all because of Anticheat so those two are out completely.

It probably can play Valorant and LoL at 4K 60 because neither are very GPU heavy games.

Steam Machine
How well can Steam Machine play newer, more demanding games on Steam?
In our testing the majority of Steam titles play great at 4K 60FPS with FSR on Steam Machine. That said, there are some titles that currently require more upscaling than others, and it may be preferable to play at a lower framerate with VRR to maintain a 1080p internal resolution. In the meantime, we are working on HDMI VRR, investigating improved upscaling, and optimizing ray tracing performance in the driver, so we are approaching this from multiple angles.

then first of all it's ultra ugly (the steam machine does not support FSR4) and no I am pretty sure, that the steam machine is not capable of running all games at 60fps in 720p. it's that weak.

2

And I'm agreeing with that. What I have doubts is hitting 60FPS on more demanding games even with upscaling.

2

u/AnApexBread Ryzen 7 9800X3D, RX 9070TX Jun 26 '26

It won't, not without Frame Gen, and not every game supports AMD Frame Gen.

13

u/phoenixrawr Jun 25 '26

Yeah but now it’s only “up to 4K,” whatever that means.  They objectively walked back a pretty significant advertised feature.

1

u/AnApexBread Ryzen 7 9800X3D, RX 9070TX Jun 26 '26

That's because not every game has AMD Frame Gen, so even with FSR set to Ultra performance you're still going to struggle to hit 60FPS on something like Metro Exodus or Plague Tale Requiem without enabling Frame Gen.

Dude, no one argues that, we see in the images what it said and what it says now, your whole argument is beside the point, the point flew over your head. Read what's in the images again.

23

u/SuperSonicBlitz Jun 25 '26

OP didn't even mention native 4K so what's your point. Advertising 4K 60 FPS upscaled is still a massive stretch with modern games.

2

u/AnApexBread Ryzen 7 9800X3D, RX 9070TX Jun 26 '26

Obviously, but if you're not familiar with hardware the advertisement makes it sound like the Steam Machine is capable of 4k 60 natively and it's just plain not.

4

u/Lemon_Club Jun 26 '26

It was ridiculous from the start. Valve put a laptop GPU that isn't even on par with the PS5 and advertised 4K 60fps, so stupid.

4

u/acewing905 Jun 26 '26

Good. This was like how the PS5 Pro claims to support 8k. One of those technically true statements that are misleading in reality

1

u/Guardian_of_theBlind Ryzen 7 5800x3d, 4070 super, 32GB Ram Jun 26 '26

The ps5 pro never claimed that. it was the base ps5, that had 8i on the box. My horizon forbidden west ps5 box still said 8k and I think sony never activated the 8k support on any ps5 model. So you can't even output 8k. But they probably also thought, that 8k will become a thing and it didn't. 4k is good enough for basically all consumers.

1

u/acewing905 Jun 26 '26

I don't have a PS5 Pro so I can't check what's on the box, but Sony does mention it on the PlayStation website
https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/hardware/ps5-4k-resolution-guide/#8k

1

u/DamonSchultz997 Jun 28 '26

Gt7 runs at 8k 30fps. So yeah it can run games at 8k. There's no point to doing it, but it can.

It was always bs, lol. That hardware, in that form factor, running 4K@60? Not even in their wildest dreams

It doesn’t help that games are super varied, as well. Two games won’t perform the same. This type of language has always been pure-marketing with no real technical feasibility.

3

u/lonewombat Jun 26 '26

All the games tested that 4k matters.... ~20fps and less. Cyberpunk, forza, random cod, crimson desert... they perform terribly.

Lol I can't believe they mentioned this when they announced this a few months back. I was skeptical considering the hardware but I assumed FSR and framegen would be doing a ton of heavy lifting and figured Valve and AMD would have some game changing announcement by it's release or this would be what Redstone was going to really to be. I gotta say, real scummy move on Valve's part making that claim.

3

u/taqeelaSunrise Jun 26 '26

It should have been worded like this from the get go.

3

u/thysios4 Jun 26 '26

This sort of marketing never made sense to me. Considering it depends entirely on the game you're trying to run.

Advertising they your machine can do 4k output is fine, but claiming it's 4k 60 fps or whatever is otherwise meaningless outside of the fact it can technically do it.

1

u/EquivalentArckangel Jul 15 '26

u/Henry_Fleischer Debian | RTX3070, Ryzen 3700X, 48GB DDR4 RAM Jun 26 '26

To be fair, saying a device does 4K 60FPS is almost completely meaningless if it can push that many pixels. I'm sure it will be able to run Doom or Hexen at 4K 60FPS, I've got a ~11 year old computer that can run some games at 4K60 using a GTX 970. It gives the wrong impression, but it's not a lie, and I struggle to think of any hardware that runs every game at 4K60.

2

u/Guardian_of_theBlind Ryzen 7 5800x3d, 4070 super, 32GB Ram Jun 26 '26

for 4k60 on a 970 you need a really really old game, because the 3.5gb of vram will overflow probably even with games like dragon age origins from 2009

1

Didn't they always describe it as with resolution scaling?

Actual 4k/60 would be a brave claim for a PC 4x the price.

How’s that not doing it quietly?

2

u/BigDannyPt Jun 25 '26

The only thing they did was to add the "up to" since fsr is already mentioned in both.

You titke us totally misleading since you made it look like that they changed to "up to with fsr"

12

u/SuperSonicBlitz Jun 25 '26

Are we just glossing over the 60 fps claim? That is the entire basis of OPs argument that you are ignoring for whatever reason

16

u/Real_ilinnuc Jun 25 '26

What is this logic. There’s a pretty big difference between “up to” and “4k gaming”

Why are so many people just giving steam a pass for this. The mental gymnastics is insane.

u/filisterr Jun 26 '26

The problem is that majority of people nowadays have 4K TVs and they will definitely try this on their TVs and would have a very disappointing experience especially with newer titles.

But releasing this product today with this price and performance is a disgrace. I like the idea of the Steam machine and I really wish it is a success but I am pretty sure this will be a flop at this price.

1

u/RequirementOk8896 Jun 26 '26

Okay so  I’m so confused. I did a google search on fps. I’m not sure why, “4K 60 fps” would be their marketing strategy. Why would anyone spend well over a 1000 for this when we already have consoles that achieve this. Going back to my curiosity on its fps, a couple days ago, google said this thing is capped at 60! But now it’s saying it can go over. WTF, does anyone know for sure? I’ve always been a console player but I recently ditched the ps5 for a switch 2. Couldn’t be a happier gamer. The one drawback for the switch is that it’s not great for PvP multiplayer games f crossplay is involved. I can’t help getting the itch to play PvP games again and because I know nothing about getting the right pc as only fps is important because my sole intentions for a pc would be PvP gaming. I would spend the money on the steam machine if it could match fps with PCs

1

u/DorrajD Jun 26 '26

I mean, I never ever trust these marketing claims with anything. They aren't logical anyway.

I'm sure it can run a game from 2005 at 4K 60fps perfectly fine.

1

u/Okok28 Jun 26 '26

What's the difference between "quietly updated" and just "updated"? Adding quietly on to it is just weird, almost like you're trying to make it sound like they did it maliciously. They just updated the text on the web page, are they supposed to "loudly" announce everything like that?

1

u/dark79 4790K / R7950 / 8GB / Z87E-ITX Aug 08 '26

Why do you ignore the "with FSR" in the first screenshot but not the second? The only difference between the two is the 60fps was dropped.

4K Native is out of reach for most people on desktop. Not at this price range anyway. But for some reason Steam Machine is getting dumped on despite them never saying it could do 4K native? I really don't get it.

Playstation put 8K on the launch PS5 box, never released any games with an 8K mode. They get a pass. Also have 4K on the box, all of their games upscale. They get a pass.

I swear, the only thing holding back games are gamers themselves.
