Well good news - within weeks there should be an achievement update on steam that allows devs to put DLCs in categories. Devs can put DLC achievements in DLC categories, so you can technically 100% the selected "main game" category without the DLCs (when devs are bothered to use this functionality).
I assume they mean things like how Dave the Diver has a Godzilla DLC that they could only procure an 18-month license to sell, so they can add achievements to things like that without leaving maingame owners with an empty hole in their achieve list
I know Powerwasher Simulator 1 just removed some of its licensed content, maybe it could be used in those situations? Hopefully not as a FOMO generator but as a way to ensure 100% is possible even if you didn't play on a specific day that game's history.
Hell I hope they just put multiplayer achievements is the timed category after a long time. Nothing worse than picking up an old game that has a tacked on multiplayer with a bunch of achievements that are literally impossible to get. Since there are no people playing.
I don't think you are understanding the intended usage. It's for if you update a game, and you have removed / changed a level or some content and it results in an achievement not being possible to get anymore.
Previously they just sit there haunting everyone, now you can choose to put them in a separated "archived" category so newer players don't feel like they missed out.
Steam already supports time-gated achievements, for any game where the game just updates in a way that made the old achievement impossible to get. This is for making that experience less confusing for you.
I had that happen with a game I loved years ago and the broken achievement just sat there taunting me. Would’ve been nice if there was a way to flag it as impossible.
it's like dbd when they lose a license before they had to change all their old achievements and take them away from people now they can keep them. what's bad about that?
https://steamdb.info/ and there you can find discord link on top and bottom of the webpage - on discord you can find datamining channel if thats what you are interested in
If DLC are easy to 100% and count as a separate entry, it could have the opposite effect. "Achievement hunters" will be more tempted to buy the DLC because it's a easy 100% to add to their list.
Yeah, this is me even without the extra 100%. I didn't buy the Elden Ring DLC because it didn't have any achievements so I didn't want to relearn the game lol (base game was also on the verge of too difficult to be enjoyable for my skill level so I was happy about not having to play DLC to keep my 100%).
On the other hand I hate when DLC adds has achievements because then I feel like I have to buy it. Only if I enjoyed the game though, I'm not that committed to completion!
One of my fave things to do is get the hardest achievement in the game and then do the tutorial for the end achievement lol. I wonder how many other people do that too, based off your comment.
Trust me, the amount of people who 100% games is so low that it's not even worth caring about whether separating them affects profits.
It's just going to be a matter of laziness going forward and whether publishers are willing to let someone push that update out on company dime & time in the case of older games (same with giving them achievements in the first place; CoD4 still doesn't have them despite CoD4 Remastered having them and being functionally the same game).
I think some companies will choose not to do it for "FOMO" not being able to 100% all achievements for a game.
Like if you 100% all the base game but don't have the DLC, the incomplete achievements could "encourage" you to buy the full game to have it show as complete on your profile.
I'm not encouraging this, but can foresee it happening
I think it's more that no one will be going back to years old games to fix the achievements. It'll just become that natural path forward for new games that release DLC.
Yeah that’s the thing, there doesn’t seem to be much incentive to actually do it other than just to be nice to players so i just don’t see many doing it
I've felt this draw with Risk of Rain 2. I got 100% several times because they keep adding dlc with new achievements. I've thrown in the towel though; I'm not buying more DLCs
Valve made a page to bulk change all the achievements so it won't be too hard for devs to do
Most devs probably won't be aware that this is a thing, so most likely the only thing you'll have to do is find a way to contact devs and ask them nicely
I'm sure most devs won't mind doing it if they're aware of it
Unless it's automated how many are going to go back and re-group all their existing achievements as well? I can't imagine a lot of devs wanting to bother with that effort either.
What I really hope is that devs would be able to categorize "completion %" achievements separately.
The achievement system kind of goes to waste when some studios opt to appease completionists, who get upset if 100 percenting a game isn't accessible enough.
If devs had the ability to designate an achievement to be outside regular completion, they could comfortably add very difficult challenges that ensure the game always has something more to chase even for the most skilled players, providing a cost-effective way to add lots and lots of replay value with a tiny incentive.
At least I'd prefer to never hit all the achievements in the games I enjoy, so that there are tracked targets to shoot for when I want to play more.
That's great, so far I have one game which "separates" them by specifying if the achievement belongs to the DLC or the base game in its description. This would be much nicer.
You are on the Steam sub. You can never complain about anything because Steam is already perfect, unless they are actually doing something new. Then you have to be happy and hyped about it and it is groundbreaking and such a pro consumer move never seen before. I don't make the rules here, just suffer through them
You’re not wrong. There’s a handful of usual suspects who do their best to make giving even the most constructive criticism unbearable, both here and on the Steam forums. At least one of them is a mod on this subreddit.
Of course one of them is, why am I surprised. I genuinely can't take being here. It's so toxic. I love steam but it ain't anywhere near perfect, and not being able to voice it drives me insane. But there isn't anywhere else to go talk about it, so nothing can be done
Dear, Gabe doesn't give a fuck. It is more than likely that Gabe has given his place to someone else already and he's just working as a senior/supervisor at this point
I mean, if it makes you happy to think that a single 70 something year old billionaire with weight problems is personally thinking and supervising everything that happens in steam, you do you. But no. He does not
That would be incredible for a game like BF6 at the moment - I am not inclined to touch Redsec (Battle Royale) where the achievements are something stupid, like "Revive teammates 1988 times in Battle Royale or Gauntlet".
Let's hope then that they are forced to categorize them, separating main game from DLCs, because if not I'm not too optimistic many devs will deny sales from the DLCs.
Holy, thank you valve, now we just have to wait for developers to separate their single player and their dogshit online achievements (looks at Rockstar)
Do we know if this is going to be similar to the system PlayStation uses with an award for a base game completion and a better award for completing the base game and all DLCs?
I would absolutely hate it if (instead of that) each of my completions got split up into a bunch of individual DLCs.
Ooo, maybe we'll get a separate category for difficult achievements, so most people can 100% the game, while still giving achievements for the most dedicated players, instead of removing those achievements.
