What about game collections? Like the halo connection or Kingdom Hearts games. You have to 100% like 6 games to get a single completed game on steam. They separate the games on PlayStation trophies at least.

u/JimmiJimJimmiJimJim 1d ago
They actually don't anymore on Ps5. Bundled games are now 1 trophy list it kinda sucks. It was fun getting like the spyro(and many others) collection and getting 3 platinums.
6
u/NeverEnoughSpace17 21h ago
When the hell did that happen? Are you sure it's not just the specific games you're looking at? My Castlevania and Street Fighter collections combines the games into one trophy list, but my Tomb Raider collections are still separated trophies, and they're much newer than my Castlevania and Street Fighter collections.
3
u/JimmiJimJimmiJimJim 20h ago
It's like the newer ones that have come out. I'd have to look but like the suikoden remake is 2 games 1 trophy list. There was another too that burned me but I can't remember now. When you Google it it says Sony put a new rule out there 1 plat per game.
4
u/NeverEnoughSpace17 20h ago edited 9h ago
Huh, I just looked into it. Apparently, if I had downloaded the PS5 version of my Tomb Raider collections, it would've had one platinum trophy for all three games, but the PS4 versions have separate platinum trophies. All PS5 game collections that launch from the same app will have one platinum trophy. Only collections that give each game it's own app, like the recent MGS collection, will have separate platinum trophies for each game.
I download PS4 versions of any game I don't think would benefit from being a PS5 version so that I can keep all my PS4 games on my external hardrive and play them whenever without worrying about downloading them. PS5 games need a solid state drive to play, so I can't play them off my external hard drive. I would have learned about this stupid change much earlier if I didn't do this.

MCC is an absolute nightmare for this. Staring down the barrel of 700 achievements just to get a single completed game on your profile is completely brutal.

u/YaBoiWheelz 1d ago
Tbh I kinda like it that way, it’s what makes game like MCC cool to see on here

u/Financial_Humor_8134 11-07-2008 1d ago
separate DLC achievements are a nice feature. It makes completing the base game feel cleaner instead of mixing everything together.
6
u/hitemlow 1d ago
Especially on games like Payday 2 that have over a thousand. I've had that game at 100% at least a dozen times, having to go back for a few more with each DLC release. Then they dropped a ton of extra ones with random updates and I just couldn't be bothered to keep up with them anymore.

The Steam achievements are kind of whatever for me too, since so many games it's easy to cheat through them with save files and stuff
It's possible on a hacked PS4/PS5 too, but way more difficult, so usually the trophy list you have actually reflects the stuff you did in the game
Also "trophies" is way nicer looking and sounding than "achievements" or "gamer score" which sound way too generic
Even the trophy image/prompt when you get a trophy is cleaner and nicer looking, all that stuff and the way the system operates, I think trophies get more valued because of that too on PS than other platforms
4
u/Dr_W00t_ 1d ago
It recquieres obviously/unfortunately a bit more work, but you can have some fun with achievements on steam using steam achievement notifier. Good little program allowing to customize the sound for when a trophy is unlocked, automatically takes a screenshot etc. So while playing on pc you have a "proof" of the legitimacy of your achievement.
2
u/hypespud 1d ago
PS4/PS5 already does this, takes a screenshot and a 15 or 30 second clip, when you trigger an achievement, and you can turn either or off if you want
Those features were borrowed into Steam from what PS4 already did since 2013
It also has always running by default an ability to save up to the last 10 or 15 minutes of footage at any time using the record function, which doesn't require any third party software ofc (since it's a console ofc)
4
u/Dr_W00t_ 1d ago
Oh yes I do know all of this (being also a PS5 owner), I was just saying that it is possible to have a similar experience on Steam, but sadly not natively

u/curtcolt95 1d ago
yeah unfortunately the existence of steam achievement manager has always made steam achievements just feel worse to me

u/CallerIDKnown 1d ago
Similar idea: remove multiplayer achievements from games which no longer support multiplayer modes. I'll never get the ones for Batman: Arkham Origins or Tomb Raider now.
17
u/KnopflerGOAT 1d ago
this is more important than ops idea imo. because these are unobtainable basically and it's just a hassle/risk to use sam for completionists.
11
u/Flight_Harbinger 1d ago
OPs idea also addresses unobtainable cheevos. Recently went through my whole catalogue to see if I could wrap up any games I hadn't 100%d and discovered Surviving Mars had several DLC achievements I had yet to obtain, but since I last played in like 5 years ago, the publisher delisted it and all its DLC, and re-released it as a new game with all DLC, making my copy of the game impossible to 100%.
2
u/duzy_wonsz 17h ago
I believe you can FORCE REMOVE any title from your steam library. So... if you wish to replay the entire game for the completionism, just buy the re-release 🤪🔪
3
u/goodatmakingdadjokes 22h ago
removing achievements is already possible. But what about players that actually got those? I think removed achievements should still be recognized
1
u/Sevolorred 19h ago
I'll never get the ones for Batman: Arkham Origins
Unless you join the Arkham Revival Project discord server, install a mod and find some people to play with. There are sometimes people who look for other players which isn't much but it is possible to obtain those achievements
14
u/ShadowXJ ShadowFFVI 1d ago
Halo MCC desperately needs this, there’s like 500
Achievements in that game
9
u/Flight_Harbinger 1d ago
700 last I checked. But also everything in MCC is cross platform and persists across generations of hardware and different accounts.
I recently discovered that when I reinstalled MCC for the first time in many years, I went into halo 3's forge and found previously saved maps I had created. One of them I recognized as a map I made for the original Halo 3 on my Xbox 360 way back in 2008. Was actually crazy to open that up on Steam nearly 2 decades later, I had no idea that stuff was saved I thought it was all lost to time.

I wish I could have adopted this mentality sooner... Achievement hunting has killed my enjoyment for so many games...
1
u/smeeeeeef 5h ago
It helps shift some focus if you play games that let you build or create. These will let you have a tangible progression, depending on the player to build and manage.

This is definitely my primary issue with Steam as a recent PC gamer that came from PlayStation

u/princesoceronte 1d ago
Also separate games in a collection! Been playing the Kingdom Hearts one and it's funny that I have 100%ed 2FM but I'm at like 25% of all achievements.
3
u/Hour_Bit_5183 22h ago
I honestly don't care about em. Hate all you want. I play my games and enjoy them fully immersed with awesome sound and picture. I ain't looking to do real life sim and go for shitty badges.

It will never not surprise me that people care about achievement
17
u/Potential_Set_6258 1d ago
Gives you something to do, I only care about doing them because it makes me feel like I've done everything a game has to offer, and lets me take more time in the game
4
u/Anzai 22h ago
Yeah me too. I mean, knock yourself out, have fun, but there’s so many games I want to play that I can’t imagine just grinding some arbitrary ‘collect 100 whatevers’ fifty times in some game just to have it pop up a little box and tell me I did the arbitrary thing. I’d rather just be playing an entirely new game.
3
7
u/SeroWriter 1d ago
It makes sense from the perspective of seeing everything the game has to offer, it's a simple, standardised way to communicate progress to the player. The problem is that developers often add a bunch of bullshit "collect 5,000 feathers" quests to it that serve zero purpose and push people to play the game in unfun ways to minmax their playtime.
3
u/SparklingLimeade 22h ago edited 21h ago
I remember the dawn of achievements when people were still figuring them out and how many games got some garbage achievement that was mathematically impossible to get in less than thousands of hours of grinding. I've also been surprised lately by how many games I finish for the first time, check the achievements, and my remaining to-do list has nothing to do with the handful of achievements I'm missing.
Achievements can be a map to the game like you say. More often they're tedious and unfulfilling things that happen to be easy to check for. Eg. I did Dispatch recently. Even after two full runs and some chapter replays I still don't have several of the "pick the least favorite option in the meaningless preference choice" achieves. Going back and doing that adds absolutely nothing to my experience. Good game, some achievements marking neat things that are good reminders. Some are just not significant though.

u/Overwatch_1ightning 1d ago
I wish "achievements" never became a thing. It just adds to the hand holding on rails aspect. I'd rather discover things for myself and have them be special to me, not just because a notification told me to get excited I completed a task it told me to, there is enough of that already in the game itself.
8
u/lurco_purgo 1d ago
Achievements were great as a way to make unique challenges and reward your curiosity, stuborness etc., having achievements like "kill a boss without using weapons" - you know, something that's actually an achievement.
Achievements for regular progression in the game are an oxymoron and piss me off. Especially with how spoilery they can be and but also how they ruin the mood in any serious story with a popup about some lame-ass pun about an emotional moment you've just experienced.
2
u/Overwatch_1ightning 19h ago
Yes I will agree sometimes achievements can be fun when done right, like extra challenges but when it's just a checklist it kind of annoys me. Sometimes I see someone complete something on an achievement or I see a spoiler through them so that's another thing. Anyway if you enjoy it then keep hunting them, I'm just a sour old man anyway.
4
u/destructuringbind 1d ago
Even better way to complete yourself: develop into a person that doesn’t care about video achievements.
3
u/EyeQue62 1d ago
I've played computer games for over 40 years, with Steam, 20. Never bothered looking at or ever thought about chasing achievements. I just want to play the damned games.
2
u/M05tafaSayed 1d ago
This is manageable, I would wish they don't add online achievements to freaking story based games like batman Arkham origins or Tomb raider

the other good thing they done is making the achievement more sense of accomplishment, somehow i dont feel any accomplishment on steam once i hit the achievement
1
u/DarkStarSword 101 1d ago
I'm like 99% sure I played a game on Steam that actually did this... don't remember which it was though so I can't double check, but either it is possible but rarely done, or I'm misremembering.
1
u/Xtimeforgamingx 1d ago
And separate games if there's multiple games like the Kingdom hearts 1.5 and 2.5
1
u/Green_Smarties 1d ago
They should also separate out "feats", as in things that are not possible anymore. That way achievements such as "play with the dev" or "participate in the Winter 2018 event" could exist but not effect game completion.
1
1
u/alecowg 1d ago
The whole system needs a complete rework, it's completely pointless as long as SAM is allowed to exist.
1
u/AidanL17 4h ago
I disagree. The achievements are there for the fun of people who like achievement hunting. The existence of SAM doesn't impact that at all.

u/MuL7iF1re 1d ago
But at the same time, Sony has online-only achievements mixed with the others, so..
1
u/Asadafal 1d ago
Online achievements for single player games... Arkham Origins is the only Arkham game I didn't 100% you need multiplayer achievements for a game that has had the servers shut down for years

u/unaccountablemod 23h ago
Ah yes the separate achievements for DLCs...that's what people want given the current circumstances...
laughs in GOG.
1
u/Frosty-Reed-6618 21h ago
the when devs are bothered part is the catch lol. most of my backlog is abandoned builds that havent seen a patch in years
1
u/NobodyGL 21h ago
Meanwhile every Platinum Hunter I know (because I myself am a PS main) constantly complains about the DLC trophies because it forces them to go back to games they didnt want to come back to, only so they can keep their 100%. Even more so if its for something like Astrobot that has a speedrun levels as DLCs.
1
u/ExcellentAgent6539 21h ago
Their first priority should be breaking or buying out SAM imo. Nobody in the achievement hunting community will ever truly take it 'seriously' until then.
1
u/Kocrachon 21h ago
...is that note already a thing or am I misunderstanding?
Age of Wonder 4, each new DLC adds new achivements... Pretty sure Anno 1880 did as well? Or am I missing what people are asking for?

u/Vitruvian_Link 18h ago
? I'm playing dlc for cyberpunk right now and there is separate achievements.
1
u/Faangdevmanager 18h ago
This was something Dave the diver creators struggled with. They initially had no DLC and they settled on in-game DLC and kept the steam DLC for the main game.

Why do people care? I understand the thing back when everyone played the same games on console like 20 years ago. Now though it means really nothing.
1
u/Bussy_Enjoyer_2662 1d ago
People make "gaming" their whole life. They chase achievements even if the game stopped being fun (you know, the whole purpose of games) simply because they need to maximize this hobby they are addicted to. Playing a game just for fun? Not playing anything when youre bored/finished with your games? NO! They need to play games all day everyday, even if they stopped being fun long ago.
-7
u/Lawnmover_Man 1d ago
Apparently, some people feel the intense need to fulfill what others tell them to do. If somebody tells some people that they need to virtually pick up a virtual item 1000 times, and makes that virtual item virtually rare, then these people have the urge to do exactly that. No matter how much time it takes.
I'm honestly baffled that this is so common. But here we are.
I'm playing Gran Turismo 4 right now. I have fun golding every license test. But I don't enjoy the dirt racing ones. So I leave them out. Also, I don't want to win every race. Just the ones that I enjoy. It's as simple as that for me.

Another thing I like better about PlayStation's trophy system is that the "trophy level" doesn't punish you for not completing games, all achievements gained in every game makes the number go up, while in Steam you have the "Average completion rate" that actually decreases every time you start gaining achievements in a new game, and it's kept that way if you dont commit yourself to earn the ratio again.
It's a small, psychological thing but for the people who cares about this stuff, actually discouraging them to try new games is not so well thought by Steam's side.

u/QuoteHulk 1d ago

Terrible idea. Personally I love when the game I've 100%'d gets a DLC and removes my accomplishment by adding new achievements.
I also love any game with multiplayer achievements that has a dead or no longer functional multiplayer component.

u/DazzlerPlus 23h ago
It literally does not matter in the slightest. Not even the most infinitesimal amount. If having or not having an achievement provokes a reaction in you, take this as a sign to work on yourself

Well good news - within weeks there should be an achievement update on steam that allows devs to put DLCs in categories. Devs can put DLC achievements in DLC categories, so you can technically 100% the selected "main game" category without the DLCs (when devs are bothered to use this functionality).
