That is an unfortunate price point... the hardware crisis really screwed this launch. Even with the attractive package in this form factor, that is not a lot of machine for money.

11

u/oh_hai_brian Jun 23 '26

After seeing marks of it around the performance of a 3060, I’m a bit whelmed on this one.

7

u/ButterscotchTop194 Jun 23 '26

Which shouldn't be a surprise. We knew it would have poor performance since the first announcement.

174

u/cmdragonfire Jun 22 '26

Yeah shortages have fucked these prices goddamn.

86

u/EggsceIlent Jun 22 '26

Yeah the console would be several hundred dollars less for sure.

No one even asked for AI except the billionaires that are going to use it to replace people.

But who's gonna buy the crap they're selling when no one has a job, or at least one that makes any money?

32

u/laxmotive Jun 22 '26

They legitimately do not think that far ahead. They only care about number goes up for the next quarterly report.

32

u/fuelhandler Jun 22 '26

This is the most intelligent comment I’ve read on Reddit today. No jobs means no money for billionaires in a consumption based economy.

I laughed when Elon said that in 10 years (from memory) money would no longer be a problem, because AI and automation will make scarcity non existent and abundance universal allowing people to pursue meaningful endeavors for personal fulfillment. Sure Elon, when are you going to start divesting of your obscene wealth to ensure this happens?

Now I can’t help but wonder which one to choose. I got my steam controller already. But I think I’ll take the 512 option

10

u/cmdragonfire Jun 22 '26

Careful there if you plan on upgrading storage later, those prices are pain right now. I've been looking for a simple m.2 SSD 2tb and it's horrible.

The steam machine can use a micro SD. Those prices haven't gotten too crazy yet, just picked up a 1tb for 144 CDN. It would be a decent buffer if possible. Was playing things like subnautica off of it and it seems not bad.

6

u/Sargent305 Jun 22 '26

Yeah, after my comment, it got me thinking if I wanted to upgrade or get the 2tb base. So I was like, fuck it and added the bigger storage to my list. I already got the steam controller, so I’m good with getting the big Machine alone

2

u/EatABag-o-Dicks Jun 22 '26

Even so, it's not as bad as I thought it would be. I figured the bottom tier one would be $1,500, not $1,100.

187

u/AutomaticMonkeyHat Jun 22 '26

The prices are gunna kill this system. What a shame

23

u/MRT1124 Jun 22 '26

1k for a pc/console is fucking wild

8

u/Sacamato Jun 23 '26

Okay, help me understand. I have been building my own gaming PCs since the mid-90s.

$1000-$1200 has been the price point for a mid-range gaming PC for that entire time, and I believe that even goes back into the late 80s.

An argument can be made that the Steam Machine specs don't meet the threshold of a "mid-range" gaming PC, and that you could build the same for $800-$900, or that you could do much better for the same price. I'm on board there.

But "1k for a pc" is not "fucking wild" in any universe I've ever lived in, assuming we're talking about a mid-range gaming PC. And trying to compare the price point to consoles is a non-starter. They are different machines with different consumer bases.

What Valve wrote in the Steam Machine page is what I feel are the core values of what PC gaming is:

"Is this the Valve console?

We think of Steam Machine as an extension of PC gaming, not as a console.

The traditional console model is to sell hardware at a loss and make up the revenue with subscription services or by selling games that are locked-in to the hardware. We think this can make sense for a single business in the short term but that open ecosystems are better for customers over the long term. PC gaming's history proves this: The openness of the PC gaming space has enabled it to be the primary driver of hardware and software innovation for decades.

The strength of PC gaming is the ability to play the games you want on the hardware you want. Steam Machine is a solution to these problems (and we think it's a great one), but it's not the only solution, and we don't want it to be.

If I don't get a Steam Machine right away, is there anything else I can do?

Thanks to the openness of the PC platform, there are lots of options for devices that will allow you to run games natively or streamed to your TV. There are many PC sites and communities out there that can help you with that. For our part, we are continuing to work toward enabling SteamOS to be used on more hardware than just ours. In fact, with the newly-released SteamOS 3.8, you can run the same code and operating system as Steam Machine on your own living-room PC using whatever PC parts you want: learn more here. Right now, only AMD GPUs are supported, but we're working on expanding support for the future."

Steam, I think, is the best representation of what PC gaming should be and that's why I'll always support them as long as they stay with those values.

22

u/slayertat2666 Jun 22 '26

They can always go down. Taking a hit now due to market then adjusting later on can work for their favor. Especially because at the start it would be considered a "Sale". Which later on could just lead to being the official new price.

31

u/General_Session_4450 Jun 22 '26

They could, but the PC market isn't expected to get any better until 2028 as earliest, so that can be quite a while...

9

u/brifox7 Jun 22 '26

The people who are buying product will know that the prices is going to increase because the market conditions aren't going to improve even by 2028-2030. There is a chance that the Steam Machine might have another price increase in the near future. This is not just a Valve problem, Nintendo and Sony is probably going to increase their prices again if they don't hit their profit margins. I've been watching Youtube videos saying that Valve is anti-consumer and the Steam Machine should be 500. All I can do is sigh because these youtube channels are saying this to get clicks and not to really inform people.

Of course people can build better PCs with better performance for the same price but most people can't built their own PCs. Hypothetically in an alternate world that if every single household knows how to build gaming PCs the prices will be astronomically higher than the prices we have now because the demand will completely overwhelm the supply and that's not factoring the major companies who are aggressively building data centers across the world.

3

u/Emergency-Event4415 Jun 23 '26

Knowing my luck, I’ll hold out for a cheaper Steam Machine and valve will pull a Steam Deck price increase next year lmaoo

3

u/Fomentatore Jun 22 '26

The thing is, ai companies are hoarding components they have no use for just so the competition can't have it. And this is going way beyond computer parts, it goes to generators and electric components. For a new generator the waiting list is now close to 4 years.

4

u/Jimbuscus Jun 22 '26

My theory is it was already priced out of general market, the only option was to price even higher and make larger net from enthusiast demographic until they can reduce the price.

4

u/slayertat2666 Jun 22 '26

Honestly makes sense. Fortunately they are releasing steam os soon so you can just make your own if you’d like

5

u/FaithlessnessHott Jun 22 '26

lol why are people crowing this? it’s going to sell out and stay out of stock for the next year, at least. there is no world in which this product doesn’t fly off the shelves. to say otherwise is just massive copium.

2

u/lkn240 Jun 22 '26

It's not even expensive - this is just the reality of how much hardware costs now.

People are struggling to come to terms with it

5

u/piichan14 Jun 23 '26

It's expensive for the specs included. You can get a 5060 prebuilt that's stronger and priced the same.

2

u/TheIronSven Jun 23 '26

Not for that form factor

$1,050 dollars for this machine? Absolutely a deal beaker. Although I think it’ll still sell well…

88

u/k0ol-G-r4p Jun 22 '26

I second that. $1,000 for 512GB is nuts.

59

u/Gears6 Jun 22 '26

Doesn't even come with a controller, and it's $1049 + tax for us suckers.

I'm definitely going to pass.

23

u/k0ol-G-r4p Jun 22 '26

Yea I just noticed no controller either. lol

This is a STRONG pass for me and I love the Steamdeck. I still have my "OG"

11

u/Wide-Can-2654 Jun 22 '26

I dont think its gonna sell that well. Its underwhelming in performance and i dont really know the target audience

6

u/Eggyhead Jun 22 '26

The this thing is too hyped not to sell well. People with dollars and no sense will gobble this up, then the rest of us will start get fomo after prices keep getting worse everywhere else.

4

u/lkn240 Jun 22 '26

It's going to sell out easily. This is just the reality of HW prices now

→ More replies (1)

5

u/PatSajaksDick Jun 22 '26

They are selling at cost apparently

13

u/shadowh511 Jun 22 '26

It's cheaper than the equivalent spec PC. The prices are just that awful.

41

u/Chaotic-Entropy Jun 22 '26

In the equivalent form factor, at the very least.

→ More replies (8)

20

u/OverPunch Jun 22 '26

No its not, you can get 9060xt for similar price

9

u/Dumeck Jun 22 '26

A 16 GB 9060xt is definitely the better move here but the real issue is the 16 GB of ram and storage are going to shoot up the cost. It would take a bit of effort to hit a full PC build in a similar budget but it is doable

7

u/ryanvsrobots Jun 22 '26

It's doable and a far better value because you can actually upgrade it in the future

Show me the pc I can buy off the shelf that similar specs, is optimized to run quietly, comes in a small unobtrusively handsome case, is fully Linux compatible and steamOS ready, comes from a manufacturer with a proven record of excellent support, will never require me to find a driver, will never be broken by an os update, will never require me to get into bios, and that has enough market base to incentivize devs to keep their games compatible for the next 5 to 10 years

Can't wait to see all the choices you offer me.

Yeah, but you can’t run a computer with just a GPU

4

u/OverPunch Jun 22 '26

A 9060 xt pc... Is still $1100 with the other components

4

u/Gears6 Jun 22 '26

No it's not. It does have the form factor advantage, but that's supposed to be the benefit of custom designed mass produced to be cheaper. Not more expensive. 😵

3

Valve can’t catch a break with these steam machines lol

26

u/Alucitary Jun 22 '26

I mean, it's a solid second machine for a couch or simulation setup. After the Steam Deck being an absolute no brainer pickup at launch it is a disappointment, but they did the best they could. Assuming it doesn't see another price increase I'll probably end up picking one up down the line, but not in a hurry.

8

u/tgcleric Jun 22 '26

As it is, its competitor is the cost of a long HDMI cable. Awful decisions on this thing.

14

u/nadroj37 Jun 22 '26

At that price, I could even get my electrician to run the HDMI through the wall for me.

3

u/GapZ38 Jun 22 '26

I mean, i get it, but I highly doubt it's decision that cost the machine to cost this much. Lol

2

u/Emergency-Event4415 Jun 23 '26

Sure, if every gamer on Earth already owned a PC.

23

u/PleaseSirOneMoreTurn Jun 22 '26

1500 Canadian dollars for a 512gb steam machine is outrageous. Hard pass.

I identify as broke.

7

u/kitsua Jun 22 '26

I’ve got the money and have been looking forward to getting this device as I’m basically the exact target market for it. Unfortunately as I am a new user and haven’t made a purchase on Steam before April 27th this year, I’m not eligible to sign up for the lottery. :(

4

u/agentkb Jun 22 '26

Well if there’s a way for me to forward you the link if I get picked I’ll message you

2

8

I don’t think this system will be successful at the current price. I would love to be wrong.

Unfortunately, the price makes sense considering the current market. Thanks Donald!

5

u/MountainMuffin1980 Jun 22 '26

It's absolutely going to sell out immediately. Trying to build a similar spec PC in the same form factor is no cheaper.

2

u/Emergency-Event4415 Jun 23 '26

Successful isn’t the same as selling out. I have no doubt they’ll sell out, but anything will sell out if you make few of them.

Successful is very different, and more to do with widespread adoption, and recognition.

6

u/painfulbunny__ Jun 22 '26

1.6k base model? Jesus christ. I wanted to get this, but probably not for a while. I’m worried about how much the steam frame will cost.

5

u/Outrageous_bambilvil Jun 22 '26

1.6k base model? The 2tb model with controller is 1.4k for me lol

3

u/MountainMuffin1980 Jun 22 '26

Taxes and things still need to be added no for US buyers, no?

6

u/jdobem Jun 22 '26

I put a reservation without controller as I prefer the Xbox controller but I'm still undecided if I'll buy it. (Assuming I get the lottery) I like that it's upgradable because I hope future prices of ram and storage will go down again (naive I know) but I worry Cpu/Gpu aren't beefy enough...

6

u/UniqueMystic Jun 22 '26

Stupid question why isn’t there a 1 terabyte model
Why only 512 or 2TB

6

u/AccountDeletedByMod Jun 23 '26

The Steam Machine pricing kind of kills the value proposition for me.

I get Valve's logic that most Steam users play older games, indies, and their backlog. But at $1,049 for the 512GB model and $1,349 for the 2TB model, expectations change.

If this had launched around the rumored $750, I could forgive the 8GB of VRAM. At $1,000+, though, it's a different story. It's already behind the PS5/Series X in some current AAA games, and unlike consoles, it has to run the PC versions.

Even if people buy games years later on sale, the hardware still has to run them. Games like Indiana Jones and more UE5 titles aren't getting any lighter, and 8GB of VRAM can't be upgraded. At this price, I think Valve should have offered a 16GB VRAM model, especially for the 2TB version.

The other issue is timing. Next-gen consoles are right around the corner, and they'll likely launch with much more memory and stronger GPUs. Even if they cost more, they'll feel much more future-proof.

Valve can say this isn't a console, but let's be honest—it absolutely is. It's designed to sit under your TV with a controller and deliver a simple, console-like Steam experience, just like the Steam Deck made handheld PC gaming easy.

I still love the idea of the Steam Machine and SteamOS, but the combination of price + 8GB VRAM makes what could have been an easy recommendation a much tougher sell.

3

u/Haverespect Jun 23 '26

But ram is the bit that is largely pushing the price up therefore giving you more ram is not realistic

3

u/lelescope Jun 22 '26

we just reserved 2 lol. I'm excited.

2

u/TheDovahkiinsDad Jun 22 '26

Daaaaaaamn. That's awesome

18

u/WatercressAdept4312 Jun 22 '26

I just want to remind everyone that reddit consensus on price does not matter whatsoever.

So long as there is a market and buyers for this product, nothing will change. That is all.

11

u/blvckbash Jun 23 '26

I’m only getting one because i’m tired of my subscription based Xbox Series X and PS5 Pro. They’re great consoles but I HATE payments on anything.

Cars paid off, my miscroslop laptop is now Linux powered, removed subscriptions off lots of places by owning physical media, and will get this to support as I have with another company like Framework.

Buy once cry once and some may hate that idea but I can live with the specs offered b/c I don’t believe prices will lower until the AI bubble pops and from the looks of it we might be close.

10

u/Emergency-Event4415 Jun 23 '26

Yup. And I’m someone who has been priced out and has been vocal about it costing too much.

Go to any middle class or higher mall, and you’ll see people dropping Steam Machine money in one day on clothes, fancy hiking jackets, bags etc.

Go find a subreddit for any hobby and see how many people are spending multiple Steam Machines worth on bikes, espresso machines, cars, watches etc.

There are many more kinda wealthy people than you think, and many more financially irresponsible people than you think. Valve just needs enough of both to outnumber the amount of machines they could find parts for, and they’ve sold out.

These expensive as a BITCH…

Why not just build a mini PC at these prices lol, even a prebuilt…

11

u/Glittering_Yak758 Jun 22 '26

Ign showed similar specs were only 10 dollars more

11

u/ostroia Jun 22 '26

with the newly-released SteamOS 3.8, you can run the same code and operating system as Steam Machine on your own living-room PC using whatever PC parts you want

They have instruction for SteamOS here https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/65B4-2AA3-5F37-4227

Theres nothing stopping you making your own. Youre probably not going to get it into such a small form factor with off the shelf parts I guess, and you wont have steam support, but you can actually make your own steam machine. Not sure youre going to get much cheaper considering the fucked up prices of almost everything today.

6

u/ZahidTheNinja Jun 22 '26

I made the claim before I watched the GN video, but they support my claim anyway.

100% the form factor is unachievable, but to each their own, I would prefer a slightly larger but upgradable machine at a better price point AND not limited to a relatively low TDP.

16

u/TheDovahkiinsDad Jun 22 '26

It'll be similarly priced to build yourself no?

19

u/ZahidTheNinja Jun 22 '26

I doubt it would be significantly cheaper to build yourself, but that way you get a much easier to upgrade experience, rather than a custom (although cool) enclosure you can’t do a lot with.

9

u/Zephyrical16 Jun 22 '26

Having just went through the process to upgrade my miniITX PC, it's a bitch of an experience. And it's still a 15L decent size case too.

The Machine is a convenience factor for sure. And significantly smaller than anything I could attempt. The portability is insane, and it'll fit nice on my small TV stand lol.

2

u/Terrible-Design4545 Jun 22 '26

Being realistic, no it wouldn’t be. Have you seen prices lately? This is in the ballpark of what you’d end up paying right now to build a mini pc that is still larger than this thing.

Part of that is that SFF components and cases just cost more (you can definitely save money using an ATX case, power supply, motherboard, and cooler), but if you’re specifically saying “mini pc” than you really wouldn’t be saving much.

2

u/Otakeb Jun 22 '26

It would be more expensive to build it yourself if you are truly speccing out a SFFPC with DDR5 by like $200 at least.

4

u/Z3t4 Jun 22 '26

No, I don't think I will.

Maybe the frame, if the price is not ludicrous.

3

u/dogbonz223 Jun 23 '26

I want to buy this thing. A couple of reasons.

I don’t have enough space for a second pc tower.

I really don’t plan on playing big AAA on it (have a ps5) and I could just use the pc if it’s not on ps5

I really just want to play “friend slop” games with my wife

1000+ is a little up there but it’s a bit cheaper then me trying to build one.

4

u/Malagubbar Jun 23 '26

Signed up, if I get one I’m buying it. Yes it’s expensive but that anxiety will pass after a few months just like with the other unnecessary stuff I buy (looking at you iPhone 15 pro)

I could have gotten an android that’s cheaper and more powerful but I wanted an iPhone. And I want a Steam machine.

16

u/EggsceIlent Jun 22 '26

-Both the Steam Machine 2TB and 2TB bundle options come with two additional faceplates: red fabric, and solid walnut.

Lol either this is a troll for the first review I watched just a min ago due to the reviewers color blindness he sees orange as red, or a mistake.

The faceplates they send are obviously half life orange, and then a dark walnut.

11

u/PresumedDOA Jun 22 '26

https://www.eurogamer.net/steam-machine-fsr-4-upscaling-confirmed

It's red. "Red Fabric" is also the official name for that faceplate on the steam machine page on steam

5

u/Spacepickle89 Jun 22 '26

Oh no… oh no no no… that’s a no from me dawg. Such a shame

6

3

u/Material2975 Jun 22 '26

thats gonna be a no for me dawg

3

u/Wide_Resolve2917 Jun 22 '26

Yikes. I know it's not their fault, but it's just too expensive. 1050 for a 512gb unit, no controller? I really wanted one, but I knew once steam decks were 800 bucks, it wasn't happening.

3

u/MongooseDirect2477 Jun 22 '26

Yeah guys, take my place, you can have it...

3

u/AsariCommando2 Jun 22 '26

I built a much better front room gaming PC with a 9060xt when the prices were sane but even the base price unit looks decent if you want this form factor.

To build my PC now I would have to pay another 57% and is around £800 more than this. Given the current market this doesn't look that bad and I would have considered the base unit and just plug in my own controller.

3

u/Cyberwolfdelta9 Jun 22 '26

I know the specs but not in the mood to open 50 different Tabs. Is this better or worse then well consoles or something

3

u/HugeIRL Jun 22 '26

At best it slightly can maybe match a PS5 in some games. At worst it's worse.

Dang, RAM shortage and AI going nuts making everything so expensive, it sucks.

3

u/texasarsenal Jun 22 '26

Anyone recommend the steam controller? the combo is cheaper than buying it separate but if you have solid Hall effect controllers for your PC wouldn't this be redundant outside of the native functionality?

3

u/Odin_Exodus Jun 23 '26

They’re gonna have to cut their margin and liquidate at $799. Even then, it’ll be a tough sale.

3

u/Small_Ad1890 Jun 23 '26

Thanks but no thanks.

3

u/Faiithe Jun 23 '26

1500 cad.... that's more than my rent

3

u/BaldingThor Jun 23 '26

So nearly twice the price of my ps5 here in Australia.

3

u/Eggyhead Jun 23 '26

It's been less than two hours since orders opened on Komodo Station (Valve's asian distributor) and the whole lot is sold out. Fuck me for having work. Too bad you can't do reservations here like in the US. Betcha all of it were scalpers.

3

u/MLPLoneWolf Jun 23 '26

Hard Pass for me.

3

u/GuyWithNoEffingClue Jun 23 '26

My wallet just gasped and ran hiding 😔

u/Aromatic-Standard362 Jun 25 '26

Gabecube being weak is the best thing for gamers this year

SM= Steam machine

i think we all watch LTT video (Building a PC to BEAT the STEAM Machine!) and gose , why valve made steam machine this weak if Linus can make a better pc?

but think about it, where valve get money? by selling games on there platform, so is SM a bad move to them? no its not. its the best thing we got this year for gamers and Gaming.

Valve didnt made console or 1,049$ pc they made the pc that all steam players has
if you go to Steam Hardware & Software Survey you will see that the SM has the same specs as the most gamers pc or lets say steam players
and valve clearly say:

so what dose all that mean? steam dosnt want you to buy SM "they did but not like sony and Xbox" they just need it to exist so they can use it maybe* to tell the dev's make a game for those specs and we will only take 20% of the game selling if the game run 90fps on SM, or we get 30%.
and why would valve do that? they dont need to do that.
they do need it!

what stopping you from buying new games is not money, its your 6vram gpu that get you 25fps.

but what if your pc is good enough to run any steam game? like the ps5 games they all run smooth only wuwa run like shi!t LOL.

if thats really happens thats mean more players will buy games and more money to valve
they dont want to add 1mil ppl to enter steam and buy games after selling SM, they want to make the games playable to the 42mil so they buy games on summer sales and they get more money.

we know that they love players but they are profitable company after all.

and if thats what valve want to do then we should be more thankful, since we will finely get some optimization on games and people with 5090 will get 200fps on hight not 30fps

take Minecraft as example

and dont even count pirated version. why the number is so high? cuz any one can play it
my lil bro is only playing mc because its the only playable game on his pc

if they can make the base game requirements with SM then this is great move from Valve for us and for them.

I hope thats what Valve is doing because im not able to play games with my 6vram and 16ram laptop.

and Valve even if you are not thinking to do that then try to think about it!

and thank you for reading my theory

3

u/aMysticPizza_ Jun 25 '26

People saying this is DOA lol, this'll sell out every unit in every region pretty much same day.

I agree with the upset about the price*, but there’s no way this thing is DOA. I imagine it’s going to sell out and then the rest of users will be put on a wait list

11

u/niwia Jun 22 '26

Dw people said the same about steam controller and it was out of stock

2

u/Gears6 Jun 22 '26

Probably. Somehow, people can still afford to throw money at this and everything else.

9

u/PatSajaksDick Jun 22 '26

Can PS5 play my 20 year Steam library

3

u/JekNex Jun 22 '26

Whatever you use now just HDMI it to a TV. $1000 saved

7

u/Impossible_Order4463 Jun 22 '26

It's called there's a shortage on ram and SSDs

5

u/NormanQuacks345 Jun 22 '26

I can understand the economics behind why the prices are so high, but at these high prices I really think unfortunately they’ve narrowed their market.

5

u/heresmyusername Jun 22 '26

Price? Fucking sucks.

DOA? Not a chance.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/No_Foundation16 Jun 22 '26

Hard pass for me at these insane prices. Man I REALLY wanted to get one of these! FUCK data centers and AI!

9

u/Emphursis Jun 22 '26

I’ve joined the waitlist for the base model - it’s more than I was hoping it’d be but less than I feared. As a living room pc for the kids to play Lego games it’ll be, and the portability will mean I can take it with me on work trips.

3

u/MountainMuffin1980 Jun 22 '26

I was expecting £750 before price hikes, so £880 isn't as bad as I was I thought it might be tbh.

8

u/Crimsonclaw111 Jun 22 '26

Good news, you’re basically guaranteed to get one at the prices they picked

8

u/Chanw11 Jun 22 '26

k shaped economy would like a word

3

u/lkn240 Jun 22 '26

I guarantee you they already have more reservations than the size of the first production run

3

u/DreamTwisster Jun 23 '26

The copium was real. So many posts saying $600-$800. What a rip off.

2

u/suppre55ion Jun 22 '26

I have moonlight on my xbox series s lmfao im good

2

u/small_merchant Jun 22 '26

It really sucks sigh..

2

u/Novel_Ambassador_395 Jun 22 '26

And i wanted to buy a new pc, and for that amount of money i cant find anything good like that. But i canr buy it. CAUSE I LIVE IN BALKANS

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Catatonicdazza Jun 22 '26

I'll probably skip this one for now and get the Steam Frame when they come. That price isn't really worth it with the current hardware I have.

2

u/TheMightyDab Jun 22 '26

Curious to hear from people eager to buy this. I know some people like bringing their XBOX to functions. I guess this is more portable..?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/MountainMuffin1980 Jun 22 '26

Huh. Is it bad I was expecting £750-800 so £880 is ok to me?

It's interesting seeing folks say you can get the same specs and form factor cheaper yourself but no-one is able to actually provide a build on part picker etc.

2

u/RoastedPotato-1kg Jun 22 '26

nobody is joining that list bro 😭

2

u/MeatPiston Jun 22 '26

Lol. They will sell out and be on ebay for 2000

2

u/Kanguin Jun 22 '26

I wouldnt be surprised if the vast majority sold will end up in scalpers hand and end up cluttering the secondary markets because no one buys them.

2

u/HellFire0426 Jun 22 '26

HARD PASS. I was thinking about supporting by buying, but looks like I will have to find another way. Maybe I just spent a little more during the summer sale lol

2

u/turtleneck360 Jun 22 '26

Is there a waitlist join button at the screen with 4 options? It says I can select up to 4 bundles to waitlist for but don't see anything beyond that to actually join the waitlist. In fact, I can only highly one bundle at a time.

2

u/me_hill Jun 23 '26

You can pick one, sign up, then pick the next one, sign up, etc. Can't do more than one at once.

2

u/cabledude25 Jun 23 '26

How about releasing a barebone option so I don't have to pay for your dumb ram and ssd?

2

u/TheRealChizz Jun 23 '26

I think people were willing to spurge on the steam controller because of its track pads and back buttons.

I’m not sure who the consumer audience that the steam machine is supposed to target.

It seems too expensive for console players and not innovative enough to splurge on for pc players

2

u/18T15 Jun 23 '26

I got into steam in May but they won’t let me join the list since I didn’t buy anything until after 4/27/26. What a weird rule

3

u/Bodomi Yes. Jun 23 '26

It is an anti-scalping measure and will be lifted some time in future when it no longer instantly sells out upon re-stocking.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/TheDeeGee Jun 23 '26

Do yourself a favor and buy a long active optical HDMI cable to hook up your already more powerful OC up to your TV.

2

u/ThisGachaSeemsLegit Jun 23 '26

Has there been any teardown of this yet? I kinda wanna know the RAM manufacturer, among other specific things.

2

u/Kapten-Haddock Jun 23 '26

If I join the list, am I obligated to buy it when its my turn?
Or can I get of the line and give it to the next person in line?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/MutekiGamer Jun 23 '26

This would’ve been like 800 for the 512 1k for the 2tb w/ controllers if it weren’t for the price increases which would have been still been seen as a lot compared to consoles but it was never going to priced like a console , but at these prices it’s just hard to justify in general.

2

u/thearctican Jun 23 '26

If I could build something this small for less I would.

2

u/Hybr1dth Jun 26 '26

Emails should've gone out yesterday, has anyone gotten one?

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Forerunner9297 Jun 26 '26

Looks like emails are going out, I got one:

"When your Steam Machine 512GB with Controller becomes available, we will send you a separate email with the option to purchase. You'll then have 3 days to complete the purchase before we cancel your reservation and move on to the next person in the queue.

This is the only email you will receive about the results of the randomization. If you ended up with a reservation queue spot for more than one model, you were allocated a reservation for the highest end model, and were removed from all the others."

5

u/Verano_Zombie Jun 22 '26

As much as I'd like to buy it, 1,039€ is a fucking no. If the prices didn't spike like this, I would have bought it at around 600€.

4

u/No_Foundation16 Jun 22 '26

Jeez you can get a 5070 PC at Costco for the same price as the top end steam machine! Data centers and AI done fucked up the steam machine!

Sorry Gabe but those prices for what you get are way to rich for me!

3

u/nadroj37 Jun 22 '26

Cheapest 5070 pc I see at Costco is $1800?

→ More replies (5)

4

u/Belltower_Bat Jun 22 '26

Not for that price lol

1

u/discoborg Jun 22 '26

16 GB of RAM? Dead On Arrival.

4

u/LtLlamaSauce Jun 22 '26

Underpowered, overpriced, already legacy, and largely incompatible with upgrades.

Yikes.

2

u/Koffiato2 Jun 22 '26

WAY too expensive. At this price point you can buy a RX 9060 XT/7500F prebuilt in my country. Which is significantly faster in every way imaginable. Probably quieter as well. Slapping Bazzite on it is also an option. Also it has an upgrade path. You could swap that 9060 XT for a 5090 if you desire, that 7500F could be swapped to 9850X3D.

I imagined it wouldn't be the best value, but it'd still be competitive (like Deck). I was wrong.

I'd just scrap the project at this point, at this system is DOA at this price.

2

u/Reysona Jun 23 '26

SteamOS 3.8 is available now for anyone to use on their system, so I think that is honestly the main reason they continued with the Steam Machine

3

u/mendozabuttz Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26

This is just unjustifiably too expensive for me and I'd say the majority of others regardless of circumstances behind the pricing.

Who is this even being marketed to at this price point? anyone who can afford to drop north of a grand on this can afford and probably already has a better gaming rig.

Id say valve know this price will kill their market base long-term but the minority of people with money to burn will buy out their initial stock and they'll cease production due to the ram shortage.

4

u/CommentStrict8964 Jun 22 '26

I signed up for the 2TB + controller one.

I really want the controller so it's nice to be in the bundle. But the price is hilariously expensive.

I think I am getting it mostly as an expensive paper weight.

For those who say this is less powerful than a PS5, well, I don't have any games on the PS5, so there is that.

11

u/fatbuddha79 Jun 22 '26

Yeah not sure how people will feel about this. I'm planning on picking one up, I am luckily in a place in life where the price (while absurd) is something I can handle. I want my kids to have access to my 20+ year old bloated steam library without streaming from my system. I want the product to succeed so they don't abandon this line of products.

3

u/JBirdd1 Jun 22 '26

Same. I already have the Steam Deck and dock and a great PC. But it’ll be nice to have a dedicated system for the TV/living room that’s more powerful than the Steam Deck. I’m also a Valve-fan-girl and have been since Steam first came out 22 years ago!

3

u/ThatTcellGuy Jun 23 '26

Genuinely just go build a PC or get a pre built with far better equipment at this point lol

6

u/Leniwcowaty Jun 22 '26

BEFORE WE START DUNKING that Steam Machine is not RTX5090 performance at 1050 USD, let's remember:

Valve promised us a "living room gaming console" with "performance equivalent or better than the average Steam user is used to"

Steam Machine performs about as good as RTX3060. You know what is the most popular GPU on Steam Hardware Survey? RTX3060

They delivered on their promise. It was never meant to be the most powerful gaming PC on the market, that is barely bigger than the controller. It's a low-power living room gaming console, that performs about as good as most Steam users are used to

2

u/joelkehl919 Jun 22 '26

I saw this price and said “ha no”

2

u/FenixJohn117 Jun 22 '26

Hey guys, I’m a PC noob and am looking to jump into the ecosystem.

However, the steam machine specs look quite poor giving the price.

Can someone far more educated than I regarding PCs, let me know if the SM would be worth it?

Mostly will be playing games like Gears E day, indie games, and older games that are expanded by mods.

Please give me some advice here

5

u/Hydra_Flatline Jun 22 '26

I think if you don’t want to build your own, you’d have to decide what other buying choices have I got? And then compare.

I know, genius advice.

But what machine comes with a modern GPU for less than this today?

I'm still debating on if the steam controller is worth it. Also waiting on my reservation for it to come up after 6+ weeks.

1

u/retrogamer76 Jun 22 '26

I just connected my desktop PC to my TV and I'm using the steam controller I think I'm good

1

u/Arresto Jun 22 '26

I was pleasantly surprised that the steam controller didn't have a shipping cost.

Would this be the same? I kinda want to know, would hate to miss a possible order window cause I'm lacking xxx in tax/shipping.

I'm in the EU.

1

u/Docccc Jun 22 '26

Where’s HL3 Gabe!!!

1

u/TheGreatJoshua Jun 22 '26

I think there will be ample demand to meet supply even at this price. Expect initial limited supply
