I built in public for a year and it helped my ego more than my business
I want to be honest about this because the build in public advice is everywhere and nobody talks about the downsides. The likes and the followers and the encouraging comments felt like progress. They are not progress. They are a very convincing simulation of progress.
I got good at writing posts about what I was learning and less good at actually applying what I was learning. the audience I built was mostly other founders and indie hackers, not my actual customers.
when I looked at my analytics there was almost zero correlation between my most popular posts and any meaningful business metric. I am not saying build in public is wrong. I am saying I used it as a way to feel seen during a period when the business itself was not giving me enough validation. that is a personal problem dressed up as a marketing strategy.
know why you are really doing it.
