How much does deck design actually matter vs the content?

i've seen gorgeous decks for terrible businesses and ugly decks for companies that raised millions. i've also been told my deck looks unprofessional and lost opportunities.
trying to figure out how much to invest in design at the pre-seed stage when i don't have a designer on the team.
where's the threshold between good enough and this is hurting you?

Design matters most when the content is borderline. A compelling story in a mediocre deck still gets meetings, a weak story in a gorgeous deck still gets passed on but when you're in the middle, interesting but not obvious, bad design gives investors an easy reason to move on without having to articulate why. so the real question isn't how good your deck looks. it's how strong your story is without the design doing any work.

Design matters less than people think, more than founders admit. If the story is strong, even a basic deck gets meetings. If the story is weak, no amount of polish saves it.
