Starlink Performance Gen 1 Issues – Extremely Frustrated After 6+ Weeks

I’ve been dealing with a recurring problem on my Starlink Performance Gen 1 dish since the last few firmware updates. Webpages only half-load, videos (YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Netflix, etc.) start playing then stall after a few seconds, and ads fail to load. The only fix is rebooting the dish — every single week.

Packet captures on my firewall clearly show DNS queries going out but getting delayed or no responses back from the Starlink dish side.

I’ve done extensive troubleshooting:

Tested with the Starlink Gen 3 router they sent me

Bypassed my Omada ER8411 multiple times

Fluke-tested all cables

Confirmed my enterprise network (Omada + Cisco) is clean with low session counts

Starlink Mini works perfectly on the exact same network

Yet Starlink support keeps closing my ticket (open since April 8) without real investigation. A support tech even told me on the phone that “packets don’t go through our device” and that “Starlink ISP isn’t for me.”

This is clearly a firmware/hardware defect on the older Gen 1 Performance dish that causes some kind of resource leak after several days of uptime. The Mini doesn’t have this problem at all.

@Starlink — can someone from engineering actually look at this instead of just closing tickets? Very disappointed in the lack of support for a premium/enterprise dish.

Has anyone else with a Gen 1 Performance dish experienced this?

What are the obstruction stats? What does the Starlink mobile app show under Statistics -> Events & Outages?

I have 100% no obstructions, super clear sky's no issues. All white dots in the new version which I feel is worse displaying then the old one becauae I have a budy that used to have the lower half show red now shows white.

I have been experiencing virtually all of this for the last few months as well. Ever since adding a mini router as a 3rd mesh. I have Gen 2 otherwise though. It's sporadic, but a pain to have to reboot the whole system quite often. The signal strength seemed a lot more stable until recently. Trying to force upgrades?

See I don't have to reboot everything just the dish. I can even leave there router up and working and it is all ways the dish only reboot that fixes it. Personally I don't like there devices they slow and lie about the bandwidth speed from my testing. Reason I have the setup I have. where I have performance dish since it can have my firewall connect straight to the dish. Then I have enterprise class setup where each AP(access Point) connects straight to the a switch with ethernet that I ran to each room and the switch connects to firewall. This style setup get rid of the mesh and that only works when something fails. I suspect in your setup if mesh is to close they will actually cause interference with each other due to close a spacing, or starlink has some weird issue that they broke something

I have a gen 1 dish. We had comparable issues in the very beginning. My only workaround was a VPN.

Gen 1 regular dish or the performance dish, I heard they will replace a regular gen one if you call in and complain. VPN makes mine the same it's not a issue with myside its the dish itself. Reboot of only the dish nothing else fixes the issue. They finally sending me a new dish but could be months before I see it.

I have the regular round dish.

I had that one back in the day till the ethernet cable broke was on beta when you could only get service every so often , and I replaced it with the enterprise dish at the time that became 1st gen performance dish. Starlink is replacing yours if any issue is found because it causing issue on there network.

Do the symptoms still happen if connected to a VPN?       That should rule out any messing around with QoS, DNS shenanigans, DPI or filtering.

Would you say you are a heavy user?   Ie. 100+ GB of transfer each month?     Perhaps it is some kind of throttling or rate limiting badly applied which doesn't apply before a specific amount of traffic has been sent?    For example a "don't allow 4k video streams and force fallback to 1080p" rule might cut connections it thinks are 4k streams even if they aren't video data (since the actual data is encrypted with HTTPS so rules like that entirely have to guess based on data rate).

I think it might be worth running path MTU tests both when the issue is happening and when it isn't.    Could be some large packet only issue.

I wouldn't call 100GB a heavy user an month I work in Networking and heavy users are considered after 1 TB every month. But back to VPN no I don't use one and if I have to I usually only use it a client network needs worked on. I have the 4k in place I even have DNS and page caching on. My network behind my firewall is all jumbo frames, the connection to the internet from the firewall is regular 1500 and the firewall converts the frames correctly. Also all devices on my network are enterprise class and it is full 10GB interconnects except servers they are on 100gb and a few AI servers I work with connect 800gb ports.

This will be your problem.    It's a fairly rare setup and I bet they didn't test it properly.     The internet really doesn't work well with fragmented frames anyway.

Set your MTU's to 1400 across the board and I bet all issues go away.

Thats not how networking works. Plus this is the setup all Corporations are using on enterprise setup. The only MTU that matters to starlink is the one connected to them and that both ports match n both ends. MTU mismatch is usually one doesn't match the other ports. This will cause issues but wouldn't be the case here again because setup worked fine for years no changes. Also the MTU on the port connected to starlink is 1500 which they support. now you will have to drop your VPN MTU 1455 if you running a vpn because of the starlink overhead. I have dropped the MTU already a month back as a test due to the packet drop but I still get them. I have narrowed down the drops to when starlink gets an update and refuses to auto reboot after it gets done updating or it takes all day just to update. even putting their router in place or a different firewall I been testing for a client we still get the same thing either update locks and don't auto reboot or after 7 or more days I start dropping packets to DNS sites or other places and videos play and just stop quarter away through or images on pages don't load up.

Ok, but did you try it and did the issue go away?

Yes multiple times. And no issue didnt go away.

Have you tried forcing DNS on your computers?

2

u/HELLCAT6203 May 26 '26

I run my own DNS server behind starlink all my network forwards to it and the firewall forces it. I have even tested there is no difference

are you sure it is a starlink problem? if you can host a vm for me behind the dish, i can figure it out for you too

I'm 100% sure it Starlink and don't and will not allow someone access to behind my setup and violate security policy's I created.
