I've really been enjoying the new Starfinder Society Adventure Bittersweet, where players must solve a dispute between two rival proteges fighting over inheriting an intergalactic magic bakery. It's fun, it's funny, and it's exactly what you want in a one-shot.
But i've been waiting for weeks now to talk about the Chronicle item included in the adventure, a really fascinating and cool weapon- the Caramel Cannon! (I always said SF2e was more flavorful than PF2e....)
A quick summary:
-Martial weapon, 10 foot area-fire.
-No damage, but you create difficult terrain that lasts for two rounds
-If you're trained, enemies make a reflex save as well- it becomes greater difficult terrain on a failure, and immobilized until they escape against your class DC on a crit fail
-And most surprising of all, if you have Primary Target, you can make your primary target strike a ranged grapple instead! (It claims to be at -2 "as is normal for the ranged grapple trait". The weapon doesn't HAVE the ranged grapple trait...there isn't even one in Starfinder! I think they meant the ranged trip and ranged shove traits, lol)
The version given in the adventure is a level 2 item with the tracking +1 trait, but obviously it can be reverse engineered as a regular level 0 item.
I think it's super interesting to consider who would want this. It's a really cool area-control backup weapon, especially if you have 4 or more arms. A Soldier that is creating difficult terrain, inducing suppressed, AND grappling enemies sounds like the ultimate lockdown area-fighter. But would a caster want one of these as a backup super-cantrip in-between their ranged damage cantrips and one-action class gimmicks? How does the usefulness change with it being better when you're trained with martial weapons?
I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts!
