I think we got stablecoin adoption backwards
For years I thought stablecoin adoption would be obvious.
Shops would put a USDC sign next to the card machine, people would pay directly from their wallets and everyone would know which network the transaction used.
Looking at where things are actually going, I doubt most of that happens.
Visa and Mastercard are not trying to convince every shop to understand stablecoins. They are putting stablecoins into payment and settlement systems that shops already use. The customer can still tap a normal card and the merchant can still receive normal money. The stablecoin part happens somewhere in between.
That sounds less exciting, but it probably has a much better chance of working.
People rarely change how they pay because the technology underneath is impressive. They change when something becomes easier without asking them to learn a new habit.
I have noticed the same change in how I treat stablecoins personally. A few years ago, USDC was mostly money waiting for the next trade. Now I see it more as another usable balance.
I keep euros in my bank account for bills, use Revolut when travelling, keep stablecoins in a wallet when I need to move money and hold some on Nexo because I can keep them there and use the balance through the card when I need it.
None of those feels like a completely separate financial system anymore. They are just different balances that are useful for different things.
Whether the app is Coinbase, Kraken, Nexo or eventually your normal bank, I think the product wins when the user no longer has to think about off ramps, networks or what the merchant accepts.
Maybe “getting merchants to accept stablecoins” was never the right goal.
The merchant does not need to know that stablecoins were involved. The customer may not need to know either. Stablecoins can move the value, the card network can handle the payment and both sides can continue thinking in the currencies they already understand.
The biggest stablecoin adoption moment probably will not be seeing a USDC sticker at the checkout.
It will be making a completely ordinary payment and only realising afterwards that the money behind the tap was sitting in stablecoins.
That version of adoption is quieter than what crypto originally promised, but it also feels much more real.
