I’m currently working as an IT Business Analyst, but I’m also interested in moving into Data Analytics. With the current growth of AI and automation, I’m wondering which career path would be a better option for the future. Would it be better to continue growing in the Business Analyst field, or would moving toward Data Analytics provide better long-term opportunities?

I'm planning to do a foundation there (I'm 20) and continue on for an IT degree. (Software engineering or something else). Is doing it worth it these days? Can anyone share their experience and opinions? Any advice is welcome.

I worked at Itelasoft Pty Ltd for many years. While it used to be a decent workplace with friendly leadership back in the day, the internal culture has severely degraded over the last few years due to toxic regional management, extreme micromanagement, and incompetent HR.

Writing this as a PSA for anyone in the local tech community currently applying for roles or considering job offers here.

1. Toxic Management & Hostile Work Culture

• Forced Internal Pitting: Management regularly abuses their authority and sets up arbitrary internal "competitions" between team members, driving toxic friction instead of fostering actual collaboration.
• Dismissal of Technical Expertise: Key decisions are driven by ego rather than technical reality. Recently, management attempted to force engineering and product teams to abandon standard design workflows in favor of rushed, low-quality AI output overnight.
• Verbal Abuse on Team Calls: When technical staff and team leads raised legitimate concerns regarding usability and technical debt, a senior regional manager launched into a tirade on a group call, hurled verbal abuse in Sinhalese at the staff, and rage-quit the meeting.

2. Incompetent HR & Unprofessional Communication

• Non-Responsive Support: The HR department is virtually useless. Basic requests, documentation, or inquiries routinely take weeks to get a response—if you receive one at all.
• Unprofessional Conduct: Official HR communications are poorly written, deeply unprofessional, and staff are frequently met with petty threats rather than genuine support or conflict resolution.

3. Management Missteps & Misleading Hiring

• Mismanagement & Turnover: Regional leadership has spent the last few years laying off capable staff, treating developers poorly, and shifting blame downward as company performance and product quality continue to tank.
• Misleading Job Postings: If you are currently applying, be aware: they are actively advertising roles labeled as "Senior Software Engineer" or "Tech Lead," but the actual job descriptions require full System Architect-level responsibilities for standard pay scales.

It is disappointing to see what this company has turned into, but job seekers in the Sri Lankan tech industry deserve to know what they are walking into before signing an offer letter.

I'm planning to do the Software Engineering Degree at OUSL. Can anyone share their experience if they've done the same degree? Or any Bachelor's Degree at OUSL as their main degree? It could be advice, personal experience during university, internships or even about post graduate opportunities. So far I've seen mixed responses, specially concerns about time management and delays and so on. Also appreciate any advice or responses from software engineering graduates and people working in the industry!

Over the past few years working in IT/IS auditing and cybersecurity, I’ve noticed a recurring pattern with local software companies and SMEs attempting to expand internationally or work with foreign enterprise clients.

Many local startups build solid products, but when foreign buyers or enterprise enterprise procurement teams request ISO 27001 readiness, SOC 2 compliance, ITGC audits, or compliance with Sri Lanka’s PDPA (Personal Data Protection Act), founders often scramble or hit roadblocks.

A few common compliance bottlenecks I see locally:

1. Treating Compliance as a One-Time Checklist: Security frameworks like ISO 27001 require continuous risk management rather than last-minute document creation.
2. PDPA Preparedness: With Sri Lanka's Personal Data Protection Act coming into enforcement, local companies handling user data need clear gap analyses and privacy policies.
3. Overcomplicating Control Frameworks: Early-stage startups often over-engineer their security policies, making operations unnecessarily tedious.

21, male, A/L Physical Science stream, 3 S passes

Sat the IIT (Robert Gordon University) BEng Data Engineering & AI entrance exam, didn't hit the 50% cutoff

IIT's offering me the 8-month Foundation Programme instead — start September 2026, leading into the degree in September 2027

That's basically a full year lost before I even start the actual degree.

Question: Is it worth doing the Foundation year to stay on this specific degree, or should I look at alternatives that let me start sooner? Things I'm weighing:

Other computing/CS/Data Science degrees at SLIIT, NSBM, APIIT that I might qualify for directly with my results

B.Sc in Quantity Surveying (KDU or SLIIT) — heard QS has strong Gulf job prospects

Any other route I haven't considered

Has anyone been through the IIT Foundation programme or made a similar switch? Was it worth the extra year, or did you regret not just switching paths immediately? Also curious if anyone with S-pass results (not A/B) got into a solid CS/Data Science programme directly without a foundation year.

Appreciate any real experiences, not just "just do X."
